FRIDAY 28TH DECEMBER 8pm till late! Have you ever seen the two hundred year old Journal of Captain Cook in which he talks about the discovery of Norfolk Island? From this week the book “4 ALIVE” will be for sale at Gallery 2899 next to Norfolk Video as well as the accounts of John Hunter and the voyage Norfolk’s Best 4 Piece Band of the HMS Sirius. Hundreds of years ago, when an explorer would Live On Stage! return home, his ship bursting with natural treasures, it was common to tell the story of the trip with the help of the journals that were kept during the voyage. Come And Dance The Night Aw ay Sometimes, depending on the importance of the expedition or the wealth of the captain, that story At would also be published. When Captain Cook returned from his first and Norfolk’s Premier Club. second voyage his journals were published, in 1773 Satisf action Guar eenteed!! and 1777. These books are exceptional in their beauty. His first and second journal were completed with over 50 engravings and charts, each of which was individually hand printed before being bound into the final book. The engravings or prints show many New Years Eve dif ferent scenes from the Pacific islands. Some show the lifestyle of the islanders while others illustrate the Want That Quiet NYE? degree of danger that the sailors encountered such as attacks by some Island peoples. The process of printing a book like Cook’s in the COME DOWN TO THE LEAGUES CLUB 1700s was a very expensive exercise and so often books were made to order like a subscription. The • NO B AND purchaser would usually receive only the loose sheets • NO NOISE of the book and would need to have their local book binder bind the book so that it matched the style of • NO FUSS their personal library. Therefore the exact number of printed copies is not always known – something very • GREAT FOOD common with books of that age – and over time many • GREAT DRINKS would be lost at sea or destroyed by fire. Troy Hamilton-Irvine has brought the Journal of • GREAT COMPANY Captain Cook’s second voyage printed in 1779 to Norfolk Island. It was during this expedition that Cook Giving You What You Want!! discovered and charted the island. Among the many charts is a small map of Norfolk, which includes a good mention of the island’s beauty, flora and fauna. A second interesting account of early Norfolk Norfolk Island Island history that will be of fered through Gallery 2899 is John Hunter’s story of the voyage of HMS Sirius. Printed in 1793 Hunter wrote it to detail the Leagues Club voyage out from England among the First Fleet ships and the establishment of the settlements in Sydney and on Norfolk, including the Sirius’s wrecking on Setting the mark! our reef in 1789. In writing it he may have been trying to reduce the blame for the ship’s loss. The book has a good section on Norfolk Island as most members of PHONE 22440 the ships crew were left here for close to a year before they could be taken off. Another interesting book that Troy recently acquired from an English auction house is William Bligh’s 1792 book “A Voyage to the South Seas…”. The book describes the voyage of the Bounty, the subsequent mutiny and Bligh’s voyage to Timor in the infamous long boat. Especially from a Norfolk Island point of view the books is fascinating with plans of the Bounty and Bligh’s long boat bound in. It could be imagined that Bligh like Hunter wrote the book partially to absolve himself of responsibility over the loss of the Bounty, which was a serious incident. Similar perhaps to loosing one of QANTAS’s jumbo jets and hoping they would overlook it. These early books are our connection in understanding what the first things people back in England were learning of the Pacific and the settlements in Sydney and on Norfolk in the late 1700s. The display at Gallery 2899 is a great opportunity to see and maybe even own a part of Norfolk and Australia’s early history close to where the events actually happened. The gallery will have a fresh selection of engravings and charts from this week illustrating Cook’s voyage and the early years of Norfolk, Australia, and New Zealand. Rob, Tina, or TroyTroy would be happy to give you a tour of the gallery so drop in or give them a call on 50770. By Nina Plonka and Troy Hamilton-Irvine

Readers will realise that “ToursTours and Activities” VON ZIPPER are up-front museum functions that require a lot of behind-the-scenes organising. So I must acknowledge the hard work and application of Lisa Richards, the Museum’s Admin Officer, who does the rosters, bookings, accounts, orders, and a myriad of other things that keep the Museum on track. Finally, I would like to thank everyone on the island for their generous support of the Norfolk Island Museum throughout 2007, and I wish everyone – locals and visitors alike – a happy and safe Christmas and a prosperous New Year. A couple of days ago Rachel McConnell, who is working on the diaries of Julia Farr, a member of staff at the Melanesian Mission, came across the following diary entry for Christmas 1897. (Does it sound a little bit familiar?) I must write a little today for the benefit of all at home [Julia was from Adelaide] where my thoughts keep wandering. It is not a very favourable day being showery and threatening and we have had such floods of rain, the whole place is spongy and nasty. Has been more or less all week. Still there is “Peace on Earth, Good will towards men” and all the faces are bright and happy and all seem at one and in fellowship and we are all, I think, thankful and happy. Aerodrome Emergency Exercise “Down and Out” Every two years there is a Regulatory requirement for the Airport to carry out a full scale emergency exercise and this years took place last Tuesday the 18th December. With so much of the worlds focus being placed on aviation security these days it was thought timely that an exercise should be held based around a hostage/bomb threat situation. A writing team was established and occur on Norfolk. It was very pleasing to learn that the given the task of coming up with a realistic scenario Sergeant was offered any assistance he required and that would test the relevant response agencies and the that the arrival of a team of Commonwealth explosive processes in place for dealing with such a threat. and negotiation experts could be expected within 6-8 hours of notification. Local acting superstar Teddy Evans played the role of a broken hearted lover and Hannah Quintal made her acting debut, hysterically supported by her Mum Barb. The Airport Management wish to thank these actors and also all those that turned up to pose as passengers, your attendance added a required element of reality to the scenario and was greatly appreciated. To the responding agencies that showed up to perform their roles congratulations for a job well done, much was learnt and the Aerodrome Emergency Plan will be a better document for the exercise.

As we gear up to have big celebrations with family and friends, spare a thought of what its all about. As I look around I see beautiful fairy lights twinkling everywhere, but I don’t often see a crib and that is what Christmas is all about, the time that Jesus was born. Please come back to that and teach your children that it’s not about present giving etc, its about celebrating the time that our Saviour was born. Jesus was born and came into our world with the sole purpose of saving us. He came with a mortal body, to live the life we live. He was no different in His village than any other baby, and growing up led a very unremarkable life helping his mother Mary and Joseph His foster father. He learnt the carpentry trade of Joseph, He was always a lovely young man, without blemish, untainted with sin, as we inherent original sin when we come into the world, that stood Jesus out as different. He went out into the world to preach on His thirtieth year, and the rest is history. He was crucified and died on the cross to save the world. He so loved the world He died for our sins - how awesome is that? So God bless us all as we rush around preparing for Christmas, and spare a thought for the birth of baby Jesus. May we all have a holy and happy Christmas. See you in church. MJC
