resource discovery and re trieval WWW gives the opp ortunity to provide legacy applications with a new lo ok and feel and to add functionality without having to change the software itself We describ e problems and p ossible solutions in the area of connecting legacy software based on terminal sessions to WWW esp ecially fo cusing on the problems that arise from adapting stateful interactive services to the stateless HTTP As a case study we present a WWW gateway to a stateful legacy application Austrian national academic OPAC by encapsu lating it within a CGI conformantgateway Keywords programming interface API for the informa tion or database system in question is available orsimilarly seriousno reliable do cumentation for the system exists Applications of this kind are often euphemisti cally referred to as legacy applications Most of them originated many years ago providing access for querying and maintenance only through interactive character based terminal sessions telnet or dedicated user interfaces The standard way to integrate sessionoriented resources into WWW is by pro viding a telnet URL A rich list of telnetaccessible resources can be found in Clicking onto such a link will start up a terminal emulation program at the client site The user then has to navigate according to the applications interface philosophy which usually do es not follow WWWs user interface paradigm Even worse most applications exp ect the terminal emulation to be p erfectly congured forcing the user to use sp ecial function keys or escap e sequences A more seamless integration can be done by writing CGI gateways which en capsulate these applications Thus users just have to deal with the usual WWW p oint and click GUI paradigm Carefully designed gateways will also result in a much simpler user interface compared to the original eg In the following sections we rst describ e interfaceparasite gateways an approach we successfully used for the integration of BIBOS Austrias national academic OPAC We then argue for a complete integration of gateways into existing infor mation infrastructures Next we address the issue of statefullness which is crucial in the design of WWW gateways and present our WWWBIBOS gateway as a case study Finally we describ e how implementation of interfaceparasite gateways can b e supp orted by to ols Interface Parasites In the absence of an API interface to an existing system the only reference is the user interface itself Our approach is based on attaching to textual characterstream oriented user interfaces with command line or page logic Providing a seamless service integration into WWW means hiding the terminal emulation feeling from the user This implies that a gateway has to run the terminal emulation on b ehalf of the client Fig The gateways task is to b ehaveasavirtual user It has to translate HTTP requests into sequences of keystrokes that are sent to the terminal emulation When the application has reacted byshowing a control sequences eg that of VT Dep ending on the typ e of gateway see section relevant information is hyp ertexted and forwarded to the client Detection of information is the key problem here Any information on a user interface is rst converted into an external representation strings for textual interfaces Usually semantical information is lost during this pro cess It is not p ossible to reverse this pro cess in general Often information is packed into a few lines b ecause of space limitations on the display This makes automated detection of information complicated or even imp ossible One has to exploit p osition information whichmay giveaclue to the meaning of astringorrelyon heuristics Another problem concerns page oriented interfaces The end of a page has to be detected b efore the analysis pro cess can start In telnet based services transmission of characters usually just stops at the end of page While this is obvious to the human client it is not for an automated one In order to avoid painful timeouts the character stream must b e analyzed to identify discriminating character sequences which give a clue to an endofpage Sometimes heuristics have to be applied here to o From the ab ove it is evident that interfaceparasite gateways are vulnerable to any kind of layout mo dications of the user interface These however are by denition not likely for legacy applications Forward and Backward Integration Providing gateways between WWW and other resources not only allows p eople to use this service without b eing b othered by its sp ecialities It also allows integration with other information systems Fig Given a particular URL the gateway will pro duce a do cument onthey Backward integration means that these virtual do cuments must have a systematically repro d ucable URL Only then another web service can make more use of the gateway than merely pointing to the gateways start page Examples of such gateways are those into X or whois forward integration backward integration Gateway WWW Service Non WWW Figure Forward and Backward Integration Forward integration conveys the approach where the gateway itself enriches its output by providing links to other relevant web resources A gateway to a sta database for instance could not only return the department and the telephone numb er of the soughtafter sta memb er but could also generate a mailto link say commonNamesurNameorganiz atio nco unt ry supp osed such an email address is valid The eort to maintain a small database of links to be included is often neglectable in comparison to the gain of integration Stateful vs Stateless Gateways WWW is based on the stateless HTTP proto col Using it as GUI for stateless requestreply applications like many CS applications works p erfectly well For stateful interactive services state information has to b e kept and maintained for a certain period of time The decision what and where state information is stored is crucial for the design Stateful Gateways Eciency and security considerations may prevent the use of a simple stateless gateway approach as describ ed below In the OMNISMyriad retrieval engine for example loginlogout is very resource consuming making it necessary to use a stateful WWW gateway with dedicated p ermanently connected server pro cesses Stateful gateways overcome such problems at the exp ense of having to maintain state information within the gateway Followup HTTP requests are related by gateway maintained state information Usually a p ermanently running gateway pro cess keeps up a connection to the server on one interaction pattern Though exible and fast this approach suers from a state bookkeeping problem During a session the history of all requests has to be memorized to provide a stateful connection to the server In the presence of client caches which all stateoftheart browsers use this management of context information can be quite complicated whenever the user decides to go back to a previous page the client will not contact the gateway but use the cached information instead New requests issued from previous pages ie previous client states may confuse the gateway It may even be forbidden in certain application states even if no cache is used Recovery pro cedures for the gateway will b e complex as some kind of request unication mayhave to b e applied or even complete playback of the whole session may be necessary A similar problem arises when the client interrupts an HTTP request State may become inconsistent dep ending on the time the interrupt occurs and the gateway and service semantics Recovery is hard or imp ossible in this case The gateway has to take into account existing

This new critter helps people browse many of the resources available on local campus networks or on the worldwide Internet. Called the Internet Gopher, this tool was developed at the University of Minnesota. Pioneering sites began deploying Gopher servers in December 1991. In the short time since, the Gopher system (henceforth called "Gopher") has been deployed at many institutions around the world. A worldwide community of "Gophernauts" has come into being, with various sites contributing ideas, utility tools, bits of code, and schemes for cooperative registry efforts. Gopher now accounts for a substantial fraction of the traffic on the Internet. Gopher servers are delivering text, index searches, still images, audio, public domain software, and more to users all over the world. With Gopher, a user can: o Find out what movies are playing in Aachen, Germany. o Learn what earthquakes took place yesterday. o Read today's student newspaper from a school 2,000 miles away. o Pick up a quote from Paradise Lost for a term paper. o Read the city council meeting minutes from Wellington, New Zealand. o Listen to the final U.S.
