Mark James Owens, 46, faces charges of possession of a con- trolled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and evidence tampering in connection with the case. He was booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility, where he remains jailed on $11,000 bond. According to the report, Deputy Ryan Gutshall and a detective were conducting surveillance at the 777 internet cafe on W. U.S. Highway 90, which the deputy described as being “known for illicit criminal activity,” when they saw two men meet in front of the cafe and head to the Office Max parking lot. (The address of the cafe was not listed, but the report stated it was “located directly west of the El Potro restau- rant.”) The men reportedly had a brief conversation and parted ways. OUR OPINION Now VA will come to you

s we wrote in a story on Tuesday’s front page, the Lake City VA Medical A Center now has access to a mobile education and training center that can bring the VA to you. On Monday, the VA held a ribbon cut- ting for the GRECC (Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center) that will operate in this area. The GRECC will be housed at the Gainesville VA, but will make road trips to various nursing homes and community-based outpatient clinics throughout the region. “We’re a real believer in a hands-on approach for many of the things that involve geriatrics and this is a way to express that,” Dr. Ronald Shorr, a physician who directs the GRECC that will be used here, told our reporter for Tuesday’s story.
