  • GLORIA GAYNOR Is All About Adapting, Evolving and Celebrating Life’S Triumphs, Big and Gloria Gaynor Small
INTERVIEW 39 EDGE er first Top 10 hit examined how hard it is to leave the man you love. Her signature Hsong a few years later celebrated the act of booting him to interview the curb. GLORIA GAYNOR is all about adapting, evolving and celebrating life’s triumphs, big and Gloria Gaynor small. From her teen years in Newark as an aspiring entertainer to her ascent to Disco Diva, she has not only survived, she has thrived. As EDGE Assignments Editor ZACK BURGESS discovered, Gaynor has learned a thing or two about herself and others along the way. Still going strong more than four decades after first taking the stage, she is not an easy woman to slow down—even when examining her remarkable achievements and indelible music legacy. EDGE: You have quite a résumé in Soul, Gospel and R&B. Yet most people associate you with Disco. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? GG: It’s kind of a double-edged sword. People who like disco music and associate me with it, I think that’s great. But when people who like other genres don’t associate me with those genres, well that’s not a good thing. EDGE: As disco faded in the 1980s, did that affect your career? GG: Yes, it did. I received fewer calls from the United States to perform. EDGE: During this time did you find Photo courtesy of Troy Word yourself drawing strength from the VISIT US ONTHE WEB www.edgemagonline.com 40 INTERVIEW EDGE: Does your fan base differ overseas compared to the U.S.? GG: Not a lot.

By Ariana Bowe Thesis Advisers: Professor Justin Patch May 2020 Bowe 2 Project Statement In my project, I will explore the New York City venue CBGB as one of the catalysts behind the rise of punk subculture in the 1970s. In a broader sense, I argue that punk is defined by a specific local space that facilitated a network of people (the subculture’s community), the concepts of DIY and bricolage, and zines. Within New York City, the locality of the punk subculture, ideas and materials were communicated via a DIY micro-medium called zines.

CAREERS NERDY NETWORKER Debut author explains CAREER DECISIONS Too complex for the NATUREJOBS For the latest career why scientists are naturals p.731 rational brain go.nature.com/yjdpyi listings and advice www.naturejobs.com his singing partner was Chris Parsons, then- president of the marine section of the Society for Conservation Biology in Washington DC. In a 20-second elevator speech that he had fortuitously practised beforehand, Shiffman — who studies shark ecology at the Univer- OIVIND HOVLAND/GETTY sity of Miami in Florida — told Parsons about a presentation that he had given about social media. Parsons was intrigued, and later invited Shiffman to be the first official live-tweeter at the December 2011 International Congress for Conservation Biology in Auckland, New Zealand. That was the first of many confer- ences that Shiffman has since live-tweeted and at which he has given talks, all of which have been fully funded by conferences and other organizations — successes thanks in part to that serendipitous karaoke duet. COURTEOUS COURAGE Shiffman’s experience is an example of how conferences can be a professional boon to early-career scientists, offering countless opportunities to meet mentors and collabora- tors as well as to impress potential employers. But there is also ample opportunity to trample those very chances. Bad behaviour, whether in or outside a session, can harm a junior researcher’s reputation and jeopardize his or her job prospects for years to come. Although neophyte conference attend- ees may plan out the talks that they want to hear, rarely do they seek advice about the many unspoken rules of proper conference etiquette.

The True Livelihood Series Reflections from… The Call to Purpose: Denise Bissonnette Living a Life Laced with Meaning As I write, I am looking out on a beautiful scene of squirrels and birds scampering for seed under a bird feeder in my brother’s Wisconsin yard. To my delight, a pair of cardinals has landed on the bird feeder, dazzling me with their bright red wings. How apropos, as I ready myself to write about the “call to purpose” - that dimension of life wherein we invite, inspire and invoke our hearts to take wing. Albert Einstein once wrote, “Strange is our situation here on earth. Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to divine a purpose.” Aristotle asserted that one’s purpose is merely a matter of knowing where one’s talents and the needs of the world intersect. We know of what they Denise Bissonnette is an speak. When we think about people we’ve known who internationally renowned were the most content, who exude the most joy, and writer, trainer and keynote who model the most wholesome and healthy lives, we speaker. For over two see a common thread among them - their time and talent was spent for something beyond their own decades, she has inspired personal welfare. Look more closely and we will find people and organizations that their time was not “spent” at all – it was throughout North America “invested”, whether in a profession, for a cause, or in to look beyond traditional the well-being of the people closest to their hearts.
