EDITOR John Callaghan (020 3478 7549) [email protected] Goode livin’… DEPUTY EDITOR Steve Bailey [email protected] A true rock’n’roll outlaw, Chuck Berry has always ART EDITOR Rob Bewick [email protected] been his own man. Our cover story delves deep into STAFF WRITER Rik Flynn the achievements of one of the most innovative [email protected] rock’n’roll performers we’ve ever had the joy to CONTRIBUTING EDITOR Rick Batey [email protected] witness, and credits him with shaping the course of rock. Listen back to some classic Chuck cuts, CONTRIBUTORS Sid Bishop, Martyn Casserly, Alan Clayson, Phil Harris, Michael Heatley, celebrate their majesty, and it quickly becomes Hayden Hewitt, Matt Lamy, Marcus Leadley, obvious how the man really did lay down the Alun Lower, Gareth Morgan, Lars Mullen, Douglas Noble, Julian Piper, Richard Purvis, Huw Price, blueprint for much of the music worth listening to Tim Slater, Tim De Whalley, Michael Stephens for the past few decades. INSTRUMENT PHOTOGRAPHY Mike Prior, Claire Collins Our reviews section this issue includes newies SENIOR SALES EXECUTIVE Gemma Bown (07788 266847) from Gibson, Yamaha and Sandberg, as well as a tape-style echo unit roundup [email protected] that could add a new dimension to your playing and sound. Top Topham AD PRODUCTION Craig Broadbridge [email protected] and Harry Manx are among the wise players brave enough to face the G&B

MANAGING DIRECTOR Jon Bickley interview inquisition – and both pass with fl ying colours. Add in some liberal [email protected] dashes of vintage features and workshops and we hope it’s more than enough EDITORIAL DIRECTOR Paul Pettengale to sustain you during these summer months. Enjoy the issue… [email protected] ART DIRECTOR Jenny Cook [email protected] ADVERTISING DIRECTOR Simon Lewis [email protected] MARKETING ASSISTANT Anna Wilkie [email protected]

STAR GUITAR LETTER THERAPY As a longstanding reader of G&B, having read with interest some of your letters, I thought you might be interested in me. I am 66 years old and have played the guitar since I was 10. I’ve been in various bands along the way, although purely self-taught. For the last 20 years I have suffered from osteoarthritis that has affected various parts of my body. About four months ago, it spread to my fi ngers and caused me a lot of pain and discomfort. I went to my GP and explained this, and told her that I am a guitar player. The doctor gave told me to persevere with my playing as it is the fi nest exercise for arthritic fi ngers. So it now turns out that, as well as the years of pleasure I’ve had, playing guitar is therapeutic. Chris Parker Bradford

G&B Sorry to hear about your health issues, Chris, and hats off for sending us a handwritten letter to let your fellow guitar players know about your doctor’s prescription. Being robbed of the ability to do the things you love doing is a true tragedy, and to find out that actually pursuing your passions is ‘just what the doctor ordered’ must be music to your ears. We suggest you follow your doctor’s advice to the letter, and may many happy hours of playing be good for the fingers, as well as the soul…
