Chandra Palliva Sang Allan Prabhat Rick Andrew Banerjee Sinha Ok Petersen Sinnha Vosila Aravanis MARKETING SOLICITOR CONSULTANT PRESIDENT DOCTOR MANAGER FINANCIER SIX ROTARIANS INDUCTED AS CLUB MEMBERS DURING 2015-2016 8 SECRETARY’S REPORT

It has again been a pleasure for me to present Secretary’s Report for the 2015-2016 year under the leadership of President Allan Petersen and backed by a highly competent and dedicated board. This is my second term as Club Secretary and I look forward to serving a third term under PE Stephen Taylor.

Each year, the new President brings a new perspective to the president’s role. President Allan is no exception with the very detailed “Strategy 360” strategic plan and he has furthermore brought a new, more struc- tured approach to weekly meetings and board meetings. Weekly meeting have flowed smoothly and have rarely gone overtime.

• We continue to see success in major Club Events and in particular the deferred but much anticipated Gala Ball and Dinner at Sydney University’s Great Hall which, though carried from the previous year was effectively consummated by the committee headed by Club Services Director Arie Papas. • Graffiti Removal continues to be a great success lead ably by the indomitable PP Peter Smith. • I joined three other of our Club members at the 9675 District Conference held in March • The now, finally universal access to email by members has made it possible to circulate all members much of the correspondence that in previous years would have been announced at meetings with the result that any members not in attendance would have missed out. • However the emergence of the electronic communications being ever more prolific has resulted in vast quantities of “junk mail” that needs to be culled. Furthermore we continue to receive multiple requests for donations in the mail from, no doubt deserving, charities re questing support. It continues to be the club’s tradition to support a few selected charities and make a real difference, rather than to pay small amounts to multiple charitable organisations. • The Secretary’s role essentially involves the efficient administration of the Club’s affairs including record-keeping, minute-taking and receiving and circulating information within and outside the club. (While overseas on business on occasions, Member Ed Dunlop has capably acted as Board Minutes Secretary)

It has been a very satisfying year for me personally but I would not have been able to carry out the role as Secretary without the very able assistance of Pres Allan and Treasurer Rod and of course my wife Jan who most of you would know as a fairly regular guest at our Club. Jan again made a big contribution by taking and typing the minutes for the AGM.

I would especially like to express my most sincere thanks to PP Rod McDougall who has always given his time and assistance to me without qualification and has made my job very much easier than it otherwise would have been.

It has been a pleasure to have served on the Board under the Presidency of Allan Petersen. As a relatively new member of the club and as a first time director I would like to thank our members, for their guidance and advice. With special thanks to President Allan, PP Rod McDougall and Bradley Ayres for their mentorship.

• Membership - Our membership currently stands at 48 active members and 6 Honorary members. We had 6 new members join our club - Chandra Banerjee, Rick Vosila, Andrew Aravanis, Prabhat Sinha, Pallavi Sinha and Sang Ok. Unfortunately, we also had some long standing members depart from our club including PP Keith Stockall, Connie Galletta, PP Suzanne Freund and Peter Revelos. • Members Attendance/Apologies thanks to Gulian Vaccari for being an ever reliable keeper of the statistics and also for introducing some innovative measures which have resulted in more accurate attendance prediction. Special thanks again to PP Rod McDougall for his assistance in automating this process through his technological prowess. • Meetings remain at the Strathfield Golf Club, thanks to caterers Peter and Kay for their efforts and flexibility in providing meals weekly and on special occasions. • Guest Speaker Program - The Club has had a busy schedule of guest speakers on many interesting and diverse topics. Thanks to Paolo Giammarco, PP Peter Manenti, Usha Garg and Ed Dunlop in arranging and co-ordinating speakers. We have also had enlightening vocational talks from members including Ed Dunlop, Gulian Vaccari and Dr Prabhat Sinha. • Weekly Newsletter and Online Communications. Many thanks to our dedicated team of Andrew Kowalski, PP Raymond McCluskie, Chandra Banerjee and President Allan Petersen for keeping us up-to-date on what’s happening in our world. Special mention and thanks to Lesley Smallwood of Selectprint for her continued long term support in printing our weekly newsletters and special programs, including this annual publication. Special thanks to recent Paul Harris Fellow recipient Belinda Noonan of “Burwood Scene” publication. Belinda ensures the local community is kept abreast of Rotary and its achievements locally and globally. • Sergeant – PP Joseph Saad, PP Keith Byrne, Chris Virgona and PP Grahame True have shared the sergeant’s duties using the age old rule “don’t let the truth get in the way of a good fine” very well, to raise laughs and funds. • Welfare - It has been pleasing to see the level of caring and concern our members have for one another, in keeping the membership informed of those who are experiencing health problems. Thank you to PP Keith Byrne as welfare officer and other members who have contributed in this regard and especially those who take the time to visit those in hospital or convalescing at home. • Historian, Public Relations and Quartermaster – PP Roger Vince has continued to maintain the archives of photographs and documents detailing our proud history. These events were well co-ordinated thanks to the efforts of most of our members with special mention to PP Grahame and Penny True, PP Rod and Maree McDougall, Connie Galletta, Bradley and Cheryl Ayres and Athena Pappas. • Strathfield Spring Fair – an annual and major Council sponsored Fair • Carols in the Park – proceeds of over $3,500 were donated to the Salvo’s at Moree • Strathfield Girls High School – an annual BBQ helping the school celebrate International day • Homebush West Public School – we joined the fun of their Halloween Day and Pancake Tuesday • Strathfield Council –Australia Day, Plant a Tree, Clean-up Australia • Eastern Creek – 9 BBQ’s for a sports car club resulting in Raising $3,500 • The 2016 May Fair – a partnership with Strathfield Chamber of Commerce. A great community event. A good opportunity for PR and fundraising.

There are simply too many Rotarians, who have helped during the year, to mention everyone personally. However, it would be remiss of me if I didn’t sincerely thank the hard-core regulars; Grahame True, Rod McDougall, Keith Stockall, Andrew Kowalski, Allan Petersen, Raymond McCluskie, Dinesh Garg, Roger Vince, Allan Teale, Dave Martin, Anuradha Kamkolkar and Gulian Vaccari. My apology if I missed anyone.

And of course Community Service isn’t about just doing BBQ’s – although I believe it is a great and positive way to fly the Rotary flag within in local community. The club has been active in the following areas:

• BowelCare – members helped distribute, monitor and collect 400 bowel care kits through 12 pharmacies. • Red Shield Appeal – while not an official Rotary project the Salvo doorknock appeal has been actively supported by Strathfield Rotary for over 25 years. This year was no exception. • Graffiti Removal Project– another successful year with many Community, Corporate, School, Strathfield Council - and of course Rotary - volunteers. During the year the club was awarded the prestigious Blue Star Achievement Award by Keep Australia Beautiful for its anti-graffiti program. • Interact Clubs—The Homebush Boys’ High School Interact Club has t been visited weekly to encourage the ideals of community service within its members. This has been wonderfully reciprocated by their support of the Concord Rotary Club Markets, and in assistance in providing the tables and chairs in Strathfield Square for the Chamber of Commerce May Fair stall of the preloved book sales managed by the Strathfield Girls’ High School Club. An approach from the Burwood Rotary Club to sponsor this Interact Club of Strathfield Girls’ School has been sustained by weekly visits of their meetings and encouragement of their regular fundraising enterprises.

13 Probus: During the year we again hosted members from our local Probus Clubs. My thanks to PP George Hallworth and President Allan for arranging the visit and for their continued support of Probus within the Strathfield Rotary family. Rotarian George was responsible for facilitating a historical record of the forty year association Strathfield Rotary has with three Probus Clubs, all sponsored at differing times by Strathfield Rotary.

Club Raffles: Last but not least, I thank all those who ran, helped or provided donated goods for the weekly and especially the special event raffles. I am always amazed at the generosity of our Rotarians whether they donate prizes, often substantial, be ticket sellers or be a bighearted purchaser. Again too many to mention personally – but well done guys.

To President Allan – thank you for allowing me to be the Service to the Community Director this year and for your support and encouragement.

15 New Generations Director’s Report

The New Generations service of a Rotary club is to encourage constructive and positive changes in our young through leadership development and community involvement and to this end, this year we saw extensive activity and outstanding achievements from our young in the Strathfield. My sincere thanks to all our club members and particularly to our board members who contributed substantially, spontaneously and selflessly to these activities whenever required. I enjoyed my role thoroughly as Director, New Generations and owe this privilege in no small measure to Allan Petersen, our president this year for kindly inducting me to the board. Provided below is a synopsis of the years programs and some interesting highlights.

ROTARACT The idea of sponsoring a Rotaract Club potentially at Australian Catholic University was floated and explored further by many discussions at club meetings. District Rotaract members Rebecca Weragoda and Liz Huynh were invited to a lively brainstorming session chaired by our young member Ed Dunlop, at our club dinner meeting in February.

INTERACT The three Interact clubs sponsored by Strathfield Rotary have grown from strength to strength and absolutely flourished this year. The INTERACT CLUB at HOMEBUSH BOYS HIGH SCHOOL, started a few years ago is now the most active of Interact clubs. Recently the club published all their activities in a bulletin and at the farewell

of the outgoing board, our own Peter Smith was acknowledged in print as follows: “Our co-ordinator and mentor, Mr. Peter Smith is single handedly the most important member of Interact. His wisdom, ideas and connections are vital to the club’s success. His contributions are extremely generous and carefree and his hospitality is that of a father. Thank you for everything you have done and you will do for years to come”. The club raised $7000 through the year through various activities (including the Concord Markets) and donated to many organizations such as the ANZAC Research Institute, the Leukemia foundation, the exodus foundations and the Royal Surf Life Saving Association.

Following this, a similar success story was repeated by the INTERACT CLUB at STRATHFIELD GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL, where membership growth and fundraising exceeded all expectations. The young girls initiated and participated in numerous fundraising activities and raised over $3000. At the most recent event,

16

the May Fun Fair they raised more than $600 from the sale donated or unwanted books. The money was distributed to many worthy organizations such as UNICEF, DAYS FOR GIRLS, RED SHIELD etc. over the year.

MERIDEN INTERACT has performed exceedingly well, thanks to the boundless enthusiasm of the girls and their teacher Sharna Kershaw and the unerring support of Roger Vince. In September 2015, an amount of $5000 was presented to Plan Australia for education of girls in war torn and developing countries like Afganistan. The highlight was a 11 day visit in December 2015 to Laos by 17 girls, where they took part in animal protection activities with a focus on elephant conservation. The girls made generations donations to the local school in the form of educational materials and helped with the education of children, by actively participating in the construction of the Nong Tok Village local school.

RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) With the continuing commitment of Roger Vince and Peter Smith and the added commitment of Arie Pappas this year, 5 students were sponsored by our club to 2 RYPEN camps in the year. Madison King from Meriden attended the camp at the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence in July and the April 2016 camp at Teen Ranch Cobbitty was attended by 4 students from 4 different schools (Leon Rettie from South Strathfield High, Daisy Hannaford from Meriden; Lydia Cellucci from Strathfield Girls’ High and Athan Pappas from Trinity Grammar). All students were ecstatic about the learning experience of the camp and our club was treated to interesting de-briefs on their return to the club.

RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) Our young university student Dimitri Kikilas who attended the camp was stimulated and challenged along with other participants to reach beyond their comfort zones and rise to the occasion. Dimitri was regarded by our Club members as the best returning presenter and spoke very convincingly about his experience at the camp. Listening carefully, uncle Arie was quick to present his own RYLA photograph at the meeting.

YAA (Strathfield Youth Achievement Awards) With some exemplary team work from many of our Strathfield Rotarians partnering with our Strathfield Council, our local Schools, our sporting clubs, community and community groups, our young award winners, all families and friends, the Strathfield Youth Achievement Awards 2016 was judged an outstanding success.

17 Fourteen students from our schools and local area showcased exceptional talent and work in community services, caring for the environment, individual and team sports, technology, art and science. Our raffle beneficiary on the night, the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children also did well. The awards were presented by our member for Strathfield Jodi Mckay, our Mayor of Strathfield, Sang Ok and our club president.

Earlier in September, the 2015 Youth Achievement Awards were held on a smaller scale. Four young achievers were awarded for showing exceptional talent and work in fundraising, helping family and friends in need, technology and individual sport.

ROYA Recognition of Youth Award All three students nominated by our club and from Strathfield schools received the Rotary Youth Achievement awards, held at a gala function in Liverpool catholic club. Amaan Ansari from Homebush High received a prize for community service along with Katerina Mesterovic and Zoe Whelan-Young from Meriden winning prizes in the junior and senior sections.

MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) A team of three students from Hombush Boys High School accompanied by their teacher Mr. Chabes Elaro and President Allan Petersen attended the Model United Nations Assembly held at the NSW Parliament in May this year. Representing Russia, the boys thoroughly enjoyed the experience and believed they got a great deal out of the assembly.

LEP (Literature Extension Program) Presented every year by Strathfield Girls High School Students around book week, this years program in September 2015 was once again a runaway success. The pin drop silence in the room while the girls made their presentations for the book of their choice said a lot about the attention and concentration of listening Rotarians, teachers & parents.

ROTARY CITIZENSHIP

AWARDS In continuation with the tradition started in 1973, the Rotary Club of Strathfield, sponsored the School Citizenship Awards in all the sixteen schools in our local area. This prize is awarded to a worthy student showing outstanding service to the School and the wider community. Deserving students, selected by the schools received the award in the form of a prize book or cash accompanied by

a Rotary Citizenship Certificate. All Junior school awards were presented by our Rotarians.

18 DEBATING (Maurie Moroney Memorial Debate) Our veteran debate organiser, Raymond McCluskie presented the lively Maurie Moroney Memorial Debate between Homebush Boys High School and Santa Sabina College. The teams debated a contemporary and relevant topic “Science education is no longer an option; it must be a compulsory subject in senior secondary education”. In a neck to neck hair raising competition, adjudicated by PDG Paul Sarks, Santa Sabina walked away with the Lew Wilson Shield by the narrowest of margins.

STUDENT SPONSORSHIPS

Leanne Qian , a 3rd year medical student from UNSW, was sponsored for the Australia’s Asia Medical Students’ Exchange Program delegation to India. The visit allowed students to learn and experience the healthcare systems and programs in other countries. Latifa Tasipale a 17 year old student from MLC Burwood chosen as one of only 16 Australian students to the first ever United Nations Youth Association Young Diplomat’s Tour for 2016, was part sponsored by our club. Both students presenting comprehensive de-brief sessions about their activities on return to our club.

CSE (the Conocophillips Science Experience at UNSW) Many students from Strathfield South High School were sponsored to attend the The Conocophillips Science Experience at UNSW.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS A Halloween BBQ for students was held on October 30th at Homebush West Public School, along with other BBQs and pancake Tuesdays to help raise funds for the school. A crafted thank you card received from a pupil from the School says it all: “Thank you very much for supporting our Halloween Disco. We sure appreciate partnering with you on events like this to help build pupil community.” The school also received $500 from our club to buy raw materials to donate completed products to “wrapped with love” .

NYSF (National Youth Science Forum) In 2015, candidates were interviewed, but none met our standards of sponsorship. Interviews are currently under way for selection of next year’s candidate.

Once again, thanks to all our club members, our families and friends who contributed to our New Generations in any way, as we continuously aspire to unfold the enormous potential for leadership, achievement and the ability to do good in our young.

19 VOCATIONAL SERVICE DIRECTOR’S REPORT 2016

POLICE OFFICER OF THE YEAR REPORT

The Police Officer of the Year Awards night was once again a highlight of the Rotary year and it was my great pleasure to host the evening.

The awards were held on the 28th October, 2015 and presented to officers from both Burwood & Flemington Local Area Commands.

2220 VOCATIONAL SERVICE PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP AWARDS

The 2015 Pride of Workmanship Awards were held on November 25th at Strathfield Golf Club with a record 18 awardees and a supportive audience of over 120 attending.

As in previous years the award citation was read out by the nominator, however a sensible change was to limit the citation to 200 words. This allowed the presentations to flow smoothly and re- quired tight scripting by the nominators (which wasn’t always followed) The range of awardees was again simply amazing ranging from a motor mechanic, teachers, administrators, sales people, a psychologist, a Professor of Neurology and a barista.

All recipients were worthy of awardees, as they clearly understood the motto of Pride of Workman- ship “Do it one do it well - for Australia”. A number of awardees were very well supported by friends and family.

The Ray Sherry shield was awarded to Professor Simon Lewis from Sydney University, who special- ises in the research and treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Mrs Nancy Sherry was present to make the presentation.

In addition to his research work, the Professor runs a busy clinic, trains young doctors and writes prodigiously on Parkinson’s related issues. Professor Lewis is a worthy winner of the shield this year.
