Bumping your locks !

'Bumping' is a simple technique used to open certain types of locks. If your house is fitted with one of these locks, entry could be gained without any sign of a forced entry.

The technique only works on locks that use a simple pin system of tumblers. If a special key is fitted into the lock and hit with the right amount of force, the pins are knocked out of alignment and the key can be turned.

The good old fashioned Yale lock is a typical example of a lock that uses pins.

Now you know why everyone should have 'deadlocks' fitted to all their outer doors. If you are not able to fit these more expensive locks there are some products out there that claim to prevent 'bumping' but I am not sure how effective these products are.

CRIME REPORTS IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

Our Area Patrol Team and Safer Neighbourhood Team deal with a variety of incidents. Here are a few they dealt with since the last Bulletin and some Court results.

James Wells, 38 of Oxted has been sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment and banned from driving for three years and eight months after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving following a collision in Tandridge Lane, Lingfield on September 16th 2018. He was also ordered to take an extended driving test when his ban ends. Following a trial earlier this month, Wells was found not guilty of causing death by dangerous driving which he had been charged with initially. Wells was driving his silver Vauxhall Vectra along Tandridge Lane around 5.40pm when was involved in a head-on collision with a red Suzuki Bandit motorcycle, which was being ridden by Mr McClean. Surrey Police received a call around 5.55pm from South East Coast Ambulance Service to inform them of the collision and that the motorcyclist was in traumatic cardiac arrest. Police arrived shortly afterwards, and Mr McClean was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. A forensic collision investigator found evidence at the scene that Wells had driven on the wrong side of the road for 55 meters prior to when the collision occurred. There were no independent witnesses to the collision. Further enquiries also showed that Surrey Police had attended a previous collision involving Wells at a petrol station in Snow Hill, Felbridge, at around 2.25pm on the day of the collision involving Wells’ Vauxhall Vectra and a display stand. Wells had been breathalysed, drug tested and given a roadside impairment test, all of which he passed. The Judge was also made aware that Wells had a recent conviction for drink and drug driving which he was found guilty of in November 2020. ------On May 2nd in Woldingham a male was arrested after failing a breath test having been reported driving erratically by a member of the public.

Natalie Treadaway, 42, of Raleigh Drive, Horley, was arrested on Godstone Road, Whyteleafe, on 22 December 2020, and charged with driving with 49mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system. At Guildford Magistrates’ Court on 18 January, she was disqualified from driving for 14 months, fined £207, ordered to pay £85 in costs and £34 in victim surcharge.

On May 5th in Caterham the victim was pushed away from a cash point and one of three males replaced the sum the victim was about to take out with a much higher amount before running away with the cash when it was dispensed. A male has subsequently been arrested and has been released on bail whilst enquiries continue.

On May 5th police noticed a car being driven on false index plates which subsequently failed to stop. A pursuit ensued during which another car being driven by a member of the public was damaged. Following assistance from the police helicopter a male was detained in Warlingham and is now facing charges of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, failing to stop after a road traffic collision, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and driving with no insurance.

On May 9th in Bletchingley a male driver was arrested after failing a breath test and on May 10th at Caterham on The Hill a male driver was arrested for being in charge of a motor vehicle whilst unfit to drive through drugs.

Burglary Residential including sheds and garages

The Glebe, Felbridge. Overnight April 29th to 30th an attempt was made to gain access to a dwelling which damaged the front door (ref 45210044571).

Birch Grove, Felbridge – Theft. Between May 2nd and 4th a catalytic converter was stolen from a car (ref 45210045657).

Lingfield Common Road, Lingfield. Between 00.00 and 00.6.45 May 2nd an outbuilding was entered and a red Taiwan Goldenbee Quad Bike index LJ16EOY was stolen and damage caused to the electric gates of a neighbour when a crowbar was used to force them open (ref 45210045081/45135).

Beacon Hill, Dormansland. Overnight April 30th to May 1st a garage of a house under renovation was broken into and tools stolen (ref 45210045997).

Violent Crime

West Park Road, Newchapel. Around 15.00 May 7th an attempt was made to take some puppies from the victims neighbour through a fence. When confronted the suspect threw a brick at the male victim and stamped on his head and then punched the female victim in the face causing her to fall to the floor before he returned to a car and left (ref 45210047333).

Criminal Damage

The Platt, Dormansland. Around 21.10 May 9th a shed was burnt down and further damage caused to a house and fence/side gate. Two or three teenagers wearing hoodies were involved and seen running towards Dormans Station. A witness appeal has been issued (ref 45210047974).

Vehicle Crime

Newchapel Road, Lingfield – Theft. Overnight May 4th to 5th a catalytic converter was stolen from a car (ref 45210046250).

Grove Road, Lingfield – Criminal damage. Around 22.00 May 9th a vehicle parked in a car park was deliberately set alight. A suspect has been arrested and released on bail whilst enquiries continue (ref 45210047980).

BLETCHINGLEY, SOUTH NUTFIELD AND NUTFIELD

Burglary Residential including sheds and garages

Braes Mead, South Nutfield. Sometime between May 8th and 12th a shed was broken into and tools stolen (ref 45210048967).

Crab Hill Lane, South Nutfield. Between 14.00 and 15.00 May 4th a first floor bedroom window of a house was prised open and after climbing in an untidy search was undertaken .A wedding ring was stolen and the keys to a black Mercedes E class car index KN11OTY (ref 45210045933).

Theft

Nutfield Road, Nutfield. Around 16.00 May 4th a white Nissan Truck entered the car park of a hotel and stole patio furniture from the rear terrace (ref 45210045927). Around 06.00 May 6th furniture and cushions were stolen from the terrace of the same property (ref 45210046504).

Vehicle Crime

Nutfield Marsh Road, Nutfield – Theft. Overnight April 29th to 30th a blue Mercedes C class car index EY04YKH was stolen from a driveway (ref 45210044420).

Mid Street, South Nutfield – Theft. Around 22.20 April 30th a driver believed to have been intoxicated stole a motor vehicle which flipped onto its side shortly afterwards and the driver made his escape on foot (ref 45210044623).

Sandy Lane, South Nutfield – Theft. Between 14.30 and 16.25 May 2nd a Kubota all-terrain vehicle was stolen but later found by police nearby (ref 45210045221).

St Catherines Cross, Bletchingley – Criminal Damage. Overnight April 3rd to 4th a secure van was entered and a key placed in the ignition which was left snapped after the van failed to start (ref 45210045656).

Hart Close, Bletchingley – Theft. Around 06.00 May 9th a red Ford Ka index HF15DKO was stolen (ref 45210047700).

OXTED AND HURST GREEN

Burglary Residential including sheds and garages

Icehouse Wood, Oxted. Overnight May 4th to 5th after gaining access to a garage power tools, a bike, gun safe, keys and an air rifle were stolen (ref 45210046256).

Chichele Road, Oxted. Around 06.00 May 6th the occupants of a house heard noises from the ground floor of a house that was under renovation and on looking out saw a male clutching metal pipes in a white plastic bag leaving the premises (ref 45210048742).

Burglary Business and Community

Station Road East, Oxted. Between May 1st and 4th a building site was entered and after forcing open the doors of buildings and containers a number of tools were stolen (ref 45210045655).

Criminal Damage

Pollards Oak Road, Hurst Green. Overnight May 1st to 2nd a brick was thrown through the living room window of a house causing it to smash (ref 45210045038).

Barrow Green Road, Oxted. Between 16.00 May 9th and 08.15 May 10th ball bearings were fired at two windows of a property causing damage (ref 45210048041).

Vehicle Crime

Bluehouse Lane, Oxted – Criminal Damage. Around 23.25 April 30th youths smashed the wing mirror of a van (ref 45210044770).

CATERHAM, CATERHAM ON THE HILL AND WHYTELEAFE

Burglary Business and Community

Station Road, Whyteleafe. Between May 1st and 4th a building under renovation was entered via a side window and a Makita radio and battery pack was stolen (ref 45210045700/45782).

Croydon Road, Caterham. Around midnight May 9th site boxes and offices on a building site were broken into and a quantity of tools stolen (ref 45210048021).

Vehicle Crime

Essendene Road, Caterham on The Hill – Theft. Between 00.01 and 04.00 April 30th a Ford Transit Connect index BT08GWD was stolen (ref 45210044601).

Hillside Road, Whyteleafe – Criminal Damage. Over a period of time between March and April the tyres of a motor vehicle were slashed and graffiti sprayed onto the vehicle (ref 45210045750).

Croydon Road, Caterham – Theft. Sometime between May 1st and 6th a garage was broken into a and a miniature Harley Davidson and a Kawasaki Trike were stolen (ref 45210046515).

Church Hill, Caterham – Theft. Overnight May 9th to 10th index plate YD18RKC was removed from a vehicle (ref 45210048080).

WARLINGHAM AND TATSFIELD

Vehicle Crime

Hillbury Close, Warlingham - Theft. Around 12.00 May 4th the window of a works van was smashed and tools stolen by multiple persons who were driving a silver VW carrier (ref 45210045776).

Waterfield Drive, Warlingham – Theft. Overnight May 5th to 6th a secure van was entered and a Makita nail gun stolen (ref 45210046529).

Crewes Lane, Warlingham – Theft. In the early hours of May 6th the side window of a van was forced open and a quantity of tools stolen from within (ref 45210046548).

Ninehams Road, Tatsfield – Theft. Between 10.00 and 15.00 May 5th a vehicle was damaged and numerous work tools stolen from within it (ref 45210046389).
