Literacy – Full steam ahead at Cromer

We have had a great start to 2016; the implementation of our new literacy program has been amazing. Every day at 9:30am we stop normal lessons and in smaller class groups every student in years 7-10 is working through a structured literacy program. We do this 4 days a week with the clear purpose of equipping every student with the skills they need to be successful both at school and after school. This new program has been embraced by staff and students and is now a part of our learning culture at .

Musical Bells

A new bell system was installed at Cromer Campus in January to replace the aging bell sound with a system that can make announcements, have dedicated sounds for evacuations and signify our class breaks with a less “harsh” bell sound. The added advantage of this new system has been its capacity to play music which we do at strategic times. For example we play a song 2 minutes before the end of lunch, students hear the song and start moving off to class. The staff are currently having a lot of fun choosing the music to be played and last week it was my turn. The following were my selections and the reasoning for these choices.

Beginning of the day’s song – “The Best Thing” – I chose this song because I believe our school is the best thing. Great teachers, students and community, I love our school and look forward to coming to work every day.

End of recess song - “End up where you started” – This song is dedicated to the many students who returned to us from Freshwater Campus, like me they know Cromer is the best thing.

End of lunch song – “Piece of the Pie” – This song is about being successful and getting your piece of the pie. This fits nicely with our school values, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY AND SUCCESS.

End of the day song – “Get out of the House” – No it’s not what you think. The message is go home but be active, as exercise is great and enhances overall wellbeing.

Tell Them From Me

I am delighted that this term, all students in our school, like many others in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential and school staff will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) for parents/carers about the survey will be sent home with students in Week 6. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 11th March. The FAQs and copies of the consent form, including translated consent forms, are available from the website http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

P & C Canteen

Welcome back to all the students and parents. You may be aware that the school canteen is run and managed by the P & C. This means that the profit goes straight back into the school via the P & C projects for the benefit of our children.

Our aim in the canteen is to serve great food at a reasonable cost. To date we have been able to achieve this and this is why we continually change menus, introduce new items and run specials to try and keep the canteen exciting. We know that we are not quite there yet so we will continue to experiment and welcome feedback. Recently we have introduced Sushi twice a week and the response from the children has been very positive. We have special meals every day and we try to change these from time to time. Our hot meals, such as Butter Chicken, are $5.00. We do our best to ensure that there are healthy options available, such as salads, wraps, fruit, fruit juices etc. There is nothing worse than a child coming in and asking for a meal and we have run out. Please remember that we have limited numbers of meals so that we don’t waste. To ensure that your child is not disappointed, please use Flexi online ordering.

If you had a Flexi Schools account at your previous school you then know how easy it is to use and how efficient the system is. To continue using the Flexi all you need to do is go online and change the school to NBSC Cromer Campus and you can continue to use the same account. If you do not have an account we encourage you to get one, it helps you stay in control of what your child eats and it ensures your child gets the food that has been ordered. If you need to open an account then either go online to Flexi Schools Online Ordering and follow the steps or contact the canteen and we will give you a pamphlet and walk you through how it all works. We have three other payment options available at the canteen; cash, eftpos machine and the school card. The school card allows one to load money on it and your child can buy from the canteen, the card is scanned and the money spent deducted. Remember only the Flexi Schools system allows you to pre-order online.

As mentioned earlier we are still experimenting with food options and so we welcome feedback. Feedback and/or suggestions on the canteen can be given directly to the canteen staff or e-mailed to the Principal and/or myself. We will do our best to implement what we can.

Due to our rapid expansion of the food supplied by the canteen and the increased popularity among the students, we are asking parents to volunteer to assist for an hour at a time either at recess or lunch. If you can help please contact the canteen and speak to the Manager. This is something new we are trying and it provides an opportunity for you to interact with teachers and the larger school community. Your help will be appreciated by us and ensure that we are able to serve the all the children without making them wait in long queues during their breaks.

Finally, we are also looking for a casual canteen assistant to work from 7.30am until 13.30pm Monday to Friday and another one for Tuesday and Friday 7.30am to 2.00pm. The right candidate will have some previous experience in working in a canteen. If you are interested please contact me directly, my email address is [email protected]

Please continue to support the canteen and seriously consider using Flexi Schools.

Thank you Desmond McLachlan P & C President

Senior Drama Excursion

Two weeks ago Year 11 Drama went into the city to view the best of last years’ HSC Drama Works. We had dinner with Ms Weir and Ms De Montford in a Thai restaurant then went into the Seymour Theatre. To view such excellent performances is important to us as we draw inspiration from them in order to move our own studies forward. It was a great opportunity and we thank Ms Weir and Ms De Montford for making it happen. Article by Harrison Riley, Year 11 Drama
