The Guide 2018–2019 Programs & Events Make This Girl Scout Year Your Best Yet. GSNorCal’s Volunteer Learning Portal is designed to support your experience. With the guidance and support of a volunteer, girls can go as far as their imaginations will take them—and you can be there, right by their side. In fact, 95% of volunteers say they make girls’ lives better at Girl Scouts (and that makes them happy).

We know your time is valuable, which is why the majority of our learning courses are available online and accessible 24/7. This gives you the information you need just when you need it! Most of the online courses are fewer than 10 minutes long. You can study on your own time, learn at a pace that is convenient for you, and resume where you left off, and your progress will be tracked for your records. Get started by accessing our Volun- teer Learning Portal at training.gsnorcal.org. You also will find support for your troop with the Volunteer Toolkit App, which lets you manage troop communication and girl membership. We think it’s a great way for brand new leaders or leaders of new age levels to launch into Journeys or the legacy badges. This tool will be especially helpful to Daisy leaders who are just starting out! The Volunteer Toolkit is available through the MY GS link in the upper menu of our website, www.gsnorcal.org. w Get started now! Sign in at www.gsnorcal.org and check it out!

San Lorenzo, 2000 San Jose, 2048 Vacaville, 3203 Tips from a Top Seller Samantha G, grade 9, Troop 30959, San Rafael, CA - 4578 boxes! Samantha was the #3 seller for the council and the oldest girl of the top 20 sellers. With her many years of experience, we asked Samantha to share some of her tips. 1 Set daily goals and weekly goals to reach your overall goal. 2 Get out 6 days a week but don’t get overwhelmed or it becomes less fun. 3 Identify booth sites with hungry people and a lot of foot traffic. 4 Focus on a big goal, one piece at a time—if we dropped or postponed a day, we only made it worse for the next day. If it was raining, we put up an awning. If it was hailing, we booked a booth under cover. But we had to get up, get out there and do it. 5 If you have too many crates of Do Si Dos and Trefoils, the answer is not to continually whine and pester people to buy them. Instead, get more Thin Mints and Samoas, host a booth, and more of the slow cookies will sell along with the popular ones. 6 A happy smiling Girl Scout will sell more than a sulky, resentful one. 7 Opportunity is luck meeting preparation. You might not be able to fully control the booths you get, but the more you try to log on and look for booths opening, the more likely it is to happen. 8 If you can, take a crate of cookies to school every day and sell about 15-20 boxes a day there, let the people come to you. 9 Arrive at booths early, leave late (be prepared in case the previous or following troop doesn’t show). 10 There is risk and you have to make hard decisions about doing activities with friends and at school. This was the second year in a row heading into the last week of the sale with 800 plus boxes sitting in our house. Somehow, both years, they were sold. This year I fully understood the risk. Samantha would like to mentor other girls, especially girls who have done some super selling and who want to do more!
