1. Project Information

2. Objectives • To develop and promote conservation awareness and sensitization on biodiversity and natural resources • To create a cadre of trainers among the various stakeholders, which can lead the conservation actions and capacity building at various levels • To promote participatory conservation action and management of wetland resources for livelihood generation • To promote conservation of endemic, rare, threatened and endangered species • To facilitate alternate livelihood generation capacities in order to reduce pressure on forest resources and promote efficient utilization of natural resource base. 3. General Conditions • State Biodiversity Boards should be involved to make the concept stronger and meet the envisaged outcomes. • The proponent must follow a standard template for making a world-class NLC which would be made available by NMHS-PMU, GBPNIHESD within 3 months. State-of- the-art facilities in terms of execution of activities should be taken into consideration. • The focus of the NLC should also be on Hill districts of Assam in addition to its present focus. • The budget can be spent on state-of-the-art facilities and retrofitting required in terms of execution of activities, not on creating of new buildings. • The Periodic Progress Report of the NLC needs to be submitted and updated on the Online Portal of the NMHS (http://nmhsportal.org) by the PI/ Proponent on Quarterly basis consistently. • The PI must also submit all the supporting data generated through the NLC along with the quarterly progress report to NMHS-PMU.

ANNEXURE I

CAPACITY BUILDING WITH KHADI AND VILLAGE INDUSTRIES COMMISSION Venue: Kuklung Forest Range, Chirang Forest Division Date: 29th April 2019

The Nature Learning Centre (NLC)-Assam in collaboration with Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has conducted honey bee training under Honey Mission for Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) and community members in Kuklung. For the same, NLC team and KVIC went to Kuklung for the distribution of honey bee keeping kits on 29th April, 2019.

The distribution started by registration of 25 participants from the training conducted earlier on 23rd February to 27th February, 2019. A total of 250 beehive boxes, 10 boxes per individual were distributed. Along with it, bee, bee veil, smoke fumigator and other equipment/ accessories necessary for bee keeping were also distributed. Hands on training on handling of the distributed equipment was given. This program delighted the participants and facilitated an option for alternative livelihood. The overall outcome of the program will be perceived from time to time.

ANNEXURE II

CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM Venue: Fechual Jayashree High School, Forest Division Date: 25th May, 2019

An interaction session with the Women Self Help Group (SHG) was conducted at Fechual Jayashree High School on 25th May, 2019 located under the jurisdiction of Jorhat Forest Division. Twenty (20) SHGs namely Milanjyoti SHG, Jibanjyoti SHG, Ramdhenu SHG, Sampriti SHG, Sonali SHG, Anamika SHG, Jonaki SHG, Kalyani SHG, Pravati SHG, Suwala SHG, Saraswati SHG, Joymati SHG, Chiranjibi SHG, Dharitri SHG, Rangkhali SHG, Puberan SHG, Prerna SHG, Madhuri SHG, Nabajyoti SHG and Surojini SHG comprising of 40 women participated in the program. The group discussion was organised with the objective to acquire in-depth knowledge of the prevailing livelihood of rural women. It was an approach to understand the interest of women SHGs to explore alternative livelihood options as well as to inculcate the knowledge and awareness on biodiversity conservation. The members of SHGs were also asked if they would like to pursue their interest in beekeeping or weaving if proper training were provided by experts.

CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM Venue: Meragarh Narayan Dev H.S. School, Forest Division Date: 26th May, 2019

A session mainly focussing on the women Self Help Groups was conducted by Nature Learning Centre, Assam at Meragarh Narayan Dev H.S. School falling under the jurisdiction of Majuli Forest Division. A total of 16 SHGs namely Samaguri Baniya SHG, Rupjyoti SHG, Pukhuri Pariya SHG, Krishak Kalyan SHG, Padmavati SHG, Pragati Indiya SHG, Milijuli SHG, Nabajyoti SHG, Bangaon Teteliguri Jyotirupa SHG, Bigyan Jyoti SHG, 1 no. Ward Saraswati SHG, 1 no. Ward Jankalyan SHG, Lakshmi SHG, Parijat SHG, Rupali Jankalyan SHG, Jogi Kaivarta gaon SHG comprising of 50 women participated in the program. The group discussion was organised with the objective to acquire in-depth knowledge of the prevailing livelihood of rural women. It was an approach to understand the interest of women SHGs to explore alternative livelihood options as well as to inculcate knowledge and awareness on biodiversity conservation. The member of SHGs were also asked if they would like to pursue their interest in beekeeping or weaving if proper training were provided by experts. Following the presentation on alternative livelihoods, there was an interactive session between NLC team and women’s of SHG.

ANNEXURE IV

CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM ON VERMICOMPOSTING WITH KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA Venue: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Date: 25th and 26th June, 2019

Nature Learning Centre, Assam has organised a two days’ program on vermicomposting in th th collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barpeta on 25 and 26 June, 2019 for the community members of Bajali. The program intended to provide knowledge on sustainable use of bio-resources for livelihood. In this context, the program focussed on use of vermicomposted bio-fertilizers by every farmer in the state thereby encouraging organic farming in the State.

The training program on vermicomposting started by a short speech about the program delivered by KVK head. The first day training session covered the theoretical part on ‘Role of organic manure in soil health management’ presented by resource person. An easy learning module with diagrams and pictures were presented to the farmers for a comprehensive understanding on the subject matter by the trainers.

The presentations focused on the ill-effects of chemical fertilizer on soil quality and how prolong use of these fertilizers deteriorate soil quality and nutrient availability. In second session, ‘The production technique of low cost vermicomposting unit’ by maintaining the use of organic wastes, bio-residues, dungs, etc. were explained and demonstrated. The preparation of vermin-wash, selection of earthworm species, quantities and quality of bio-residues were also explained in details.

On the second day, the topics covered included ‘The production and packaging of enriched compost prepared from vermicomposting’ was presented by Soil scientist of KVK, Barpeta (resource person). The marketing options, demands and prices were discussed in the session. In the last session, a discussion on was held on ‘The role of organic inputs in eco-friendly agriculture’. The effort was made to develop eco-friendly attitude by sustainably depending on

7 | P a g e QPR - I ( Y r . I I ) bio-resources. Vermicomposting, a novel way for waste management, also aids to develop a chemical free agriculture system that reduces the ill effects on soil health and environment.

EXPOSURE VISIT TO BHAIRABKUNDA RAJIB GANDHI HIGH SCHOOL NATURE CONSERVATION CLUB Date: 10th April, 2019

The Nature Learning Centre (NLC)-Assam organised an exposure visit for students of Rajib Gandhi High School Nature Conservation Club. They were taken for exposure visit to Bhairabkunda, a place of ecological significance. Field based activities on the trail was conducted such as experiencing the interplay of nature from close proximity. Identification of common plant species along the trekking route was also done. Bhairabkunda, being one of the important tourist spots, the possibility of making the place an eco-tourism center was discussed. Also the do’s and don’ts that should be taken care of for sustaining the ecosystem and ecological significance of the place was explained. After that they were taken to Getsemani Joint Forest Management Committee, Plantation Centre, Bhairabkunda Reserve Forest. The necessity of afforestation drive was explained to the children. Overall the program concluded successfully and was able to create enthusiasm among students and teachers of forest fringe school.

EXPOSURE VISIT TO HAFLONG GIRLS’ GOVT. HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL NATURE CONSERVATION CLUB Date: 24th & 25th April, 2019

Nature Learning Centre (NLC)-Assam has organised an Exposure Visit to Kaziranga National Park (KNP) for students of Haflong Girls’ Government Higher Secondary School, Nature Conservation Club on 24th & 25th April, 2019. A team consisting of 29 students, 3 teachers, along with two resource persons and four members from NLC team took part in the program.

The program was initiated by an evening session held on 24th April with an introductory talk and briefing about the National park by Uttam , Wildlife Warden, , Assam. He described about the history of formation of the park, the biological richness and diverse ecosystems existing inside the park. After that a power point presentation on Rhino conservation and characteristics of Rhino was presented. The slides highlighted important

17 | P a g e QPR - I ( Y r . I I ) aspects of rhino like characteristics, habitat, population, poaching threats, etc. to inculcate awareness among the students about Rhino- The pride of Assam.

A short interaction session was held with students. The resource persons had shared their field experience of rhino conservation. The difficulties faced in conservation due to superstitious beliefs which has exaggerated poaching threat to rhino as well as the need of maintenance of habitat and the havoc of flood in monsoon season was also shared with students. This was followed by an interaction session by NLC member on the importance of biodiversity conservation and the activities they can take up under NʹCC as being a grassroots level conservationists.

Early morning on 25th April the students were taken to jeep safari inside Kaziranga National Park. During the safari they have sighted many animals like rhino, water buffalo, wild boar elephant and various bird species. Also different types of ecosystems inside Kaziranga National Park and necessity of each ecosystems and their role in sustaining various biodiversity was explained.

AWARENESS PROGRAM RAJIB GANDHI HIGH SCHOOL NATURE CONSERVATION CLUB Date: 10th April, 2019

The Nature Learning Centre (NLC)-Assam has organised an awareness cum field exposure visit for Rajib Gandhi High School Nature Conservation Club (NʹCC) on 10th April, 2019 with an aim to create biodiversity awareness among students, teachers and forest officials present in the program. The 5 member -NLC team visited the school at 9:30 A.M. and the following programs arranged are as follows:

The program started at 10:00 A.M. by Program Assistant NLC with an introductory speech on Nature Learning Centre and importance of forming Nature Conservation Club at school. A briefing on the importance of ecologically significant place of Dhansiri Division was delivered by range officer. After that a documentary on Nature Learning Centre was presented to provide a details of ongoing activities and works under NLC. A power point presentation on likely activities that can be carried out by club members of Nature Conservation Club was presented by NLC team member. A second presentation on ‘Biodiversity profile of Assam’ was presented by Program Assistant, NLC. The activity book of NLC for students was also explained in the program.

AWARENESS PROGRAM MUDUKI ANCHALIK JANAJATIYA HIGH SCHOOL NATURE CONSERVATION CLUB Date: 20th May, 2019

Nature Learning Centre (NLC)-Assam has organised an awareness program for Muduki Anchalik Janajatiya High School Nature Conservation Club (NʹCC) on 20th May, 2019 with an aim to create biodiversity awareness among students, teachers and forest officials present in the program. The 5 membered NLC team visited the school at 9:30 AM arranged accordingly for the program.

The program started with a briefing on NLC and importance of forming Nature Conservation Club at school. After that a documentary on NLC was presented to highlight the activities and works of NLC. A follow up power point presentation on likely activities that can be carried out by club members of Nature Conservation Club was presented by NLC team member. A second presentation on Biodiversity profile of Assam was presented by Program Assistant, NLC. The activity book of NLC for students was also explained in the program. The students were asked to conserve the surrounding biodiversity as the school lies in ecologically significant place endowed with hills and forest. The school premises already planted various important plants in school garden. The students showed interest in carrying out various conservation program.

AWARENESS PROGRAM FECHUAL JAYASHREE HIGH SCHOOL NATURE CONSERVATION CLUB Date: 25th May, 2019

A five membered team comprising of Dr. Queen Sarma, Hijam Malem Nganba Singha, Sujata Kumar, Kunal Chanda and Bhubaneswar Barman of NLC, Assam visited Fechual Jayashree High School on 25th May, 2019 located under the jurisdiction of Jorhat Forest Division. The day-long awareness program was organised with an aim to reach the students (members of Fechual Jayashree High School N´CC), teachers, community members, women self-help groups (SHGs) and government officials. The program was held at school auditorium in presence of Davinder Suman (DFO, Jorhat Division), Rupak Bhuyan (Beat Officer, Jorhat Division), Chandan Gogoi (Head Master of Fechual Jayashree High School) and subject teachers of Fechual Jayshree High School.

The program started with lighting the lamp and inauguration of the wall magazine “Shyamoli” by Dr. Queen Sarma and Mr. Chandan Gogoi, Headmaster of the school. Following the inauguration of the wall magazine, a plantation program within the school campus by Rupak Bhuyan (Beat Officer, Jorhat Forest Division) and the school teachers was done.

The inaugural speech was given by Dr. Queen Sarma to welcome the dignitaries on the dais followed by felicitation by NLC team and teachers of the high school. NLC team member, Mr. Malem hijam Nagnba Singha presented the registration certificate and a memento to the school headmaster of N'CC.

Davinder Suman (DFO, Jorhat Division) delivered a speech on the concept of climate change and the adverse effect associated with it. She also explained how the students can play an active role in mitigating climate change.

The speech was followed by two technical sessions. First session was aimed to interact with the students and the second session with the SHGs.

The first session started with registration and distribution of NLC kit to the N´CC club members. The first event was introduction of the NLC team members and delivery of the purpose of the program. This was followed by two audio-visual presentations presented by the NLC team members. The first presentation was on the ‘Aims, Objectives and Activities of NLC and N´CC’. The second presentation was on the topic of ‘Biodiversity’. This presentations were followed by interactions with the students. This presentation especially aimed to create awareness among the students and on the issues concerning biodiversity.

After the end of the second technical session, the students were taken out within their school premises to explain the activity booklet along with live demonstration by NLC team member.

Following the end of this session, lunch and refreshments were distributed to the students and the community members. Overall the program was concluded successfully and it also successfully piqued the interests among the students and the communities on biodiversity conservation.

AWARENESS PROGRAM MERAGARH NARAYAN DEV H.S. SCHOOL NATURE CONSERVATION CLUB Date: 26th May, 2019

A five membered team comprising of Dr. Queen Sarma, Hijam Malem Nganba Singha, Sujata Kumar, Kunal Chanda and Bhubaneswar Barman of NLC, Assam visited Meragarh Narayan Dev H.S. School on 26th May, 2019 located under the jurisdiction of Majuli Forest Division. The day-long awareness program was organised with an aim to reach the students (Meragarh Narayan Dev H.S. School members of N´CC), teachers, community members, women self- help groups (SHGs) and government officials. The program was held at school auditorium in presence of Mr. Sushil Kumar Thakuria (Divisional Forest Officer, Jorhat Division), Mr. Tilok Sarma (Head Master of Meragarh Narayan Dev H.S. School) and subject teachers of Meragarh Narayan Dev H.S. School.

The program started with the inaugural speech by Dr. Queen Sarma to welcome the dignitaries on the dais. This was followed by felicitation of the dignitaries Mr. Sushil Kumar Thakuria (DFO, Majuli forest division) and Mr. Tilok Sarma (Headmaster) by NLC team member Mr. Hijam Malem Nganba Singh and Ms. Sujata Kumar. A memento was presented to the DFO and Headmaster of the school by NLC team.

Mr. S.K. Thakuria gave a brief introductory speech on the aims and objectives of Nature Learning Centre and addressed the audience on why such an awareness programme needs to be carried out. He also stated how the students can play a proactive role in safeguarding our nature. Mr. Tilok Sarma also addressed the students on the concept of biodiversity and how everyone can play a pivotal role in conservation of biodiversity.

After the speech, the registration procedure started from 10 a.m. for the students of the N´CC followed by distribution of NLC kits to the members of the school. The NLC team then carried onwards with the following two sessions. First session was aimed to interact with the students and the second session with the SHGs.

This was followed by three audio-visual presentations presented by the NLC team members. ANNEXURE XIII

PLANTATION DRIVE AT GEETANAGAR HIGH SCHOOL Date: 26th May, 2019

Nature Learning Centre-Assam organised a Plantation Drive in the premises of Geetanagar High School Field, Guwahati on 28th June 2019. This activity was carried out by NLC-Assam in collaboration with a Guwahati based NGO named Green Guwahati Conservancy. Representatives from NLC and Green Guwahati Conservancy along with students and teachers of the school participated in the program.

The program began with introductory remarks from NLC and Green Guwahati Conservancy team members where significance of plants and their role in mitigation of Global Climate Change were discussed. School playgrounds are one of the very active areas of a school campus where students perform various activities round the year. Therefore, such areas need proper environmental conditions such as open and pollution free environment, natural shed along the boundary and a pleasant surrounding covered with ornamental plants. To make Geetanagar High School Field greener and ideal for students to carry out various activities, about 30 saplings were planted around it. The saplings were ornamental trees characterised by seasonal flowers and large canopy cover.

This program helped the students of the school understand the importance of plant resources and significance of conservation of plant biodiversity.

ANNEXURE XIV

MEETING WITH DEPUTY COMMISSIONER, ON RECLAMATION OF URPAD BEEL Date: 8th May, 2019

Urpad Beel, a wetland in the district of Goalpara, Assam has tremendous scope of participatory conservation and management for livelihood generation. A meeting was held at the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Goalpara district regarding reclamation and protection of Urpad Beel and developing it into an eco-tourism destination as well as a hub for nature learning and alternative livelihood for community members. Deputy Commissioner, Goalpara, Mrs. Varnali Deka, District Development Commissioner (DDC), DFO (T) Goalpara, Social Forestry DFO Goalpara and representatives from NLC-Assam and Assam State Biodiversity Board (ASBB) were present in the meeting. A preliminary concept note prepared by NLC was handed over to DC, Goalpara. She suggested that other concerned Government Departments may also participate in streamlining various activities of the project.

After the discussion session, a team led by DDC, Goalpara and DFO (T) and DFO Social Forestry, Goalpara visited Urpad Beel. The team comprised of representatives from NLC, ASBB and Circle Office Goalpara. The Goalpara DDC expressed the need of obtaining the land status report of the beel and asked officials from the Circle Office to share the information to the DFO office at the earliest. He

also put emphasis on facilitating resources for deve loping tourism in the villages in and around Urpad Beel.

EXPOSURE VISIT DAKSHIN BAJALI HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL NATURE CONSERVATION CLUB Venue: NLC Ex-Situ Conservation Site, Assam State Zoo Date: 6th April, 2019

The NLC-Assam organised an awareness cum zoo exposure visit for Dakshin Bajali Higher Secondary School Nature Conservation Club (NʹCC) on 6th April, 2019 with an aim to create biodiversity awareness among students, teachers and forest officials present in the program. The 5 member -NLC team visited the Assam State Zoo at 9:30 A.M. arranged accordingly for the program. The program was attended by 46 members including students and teaching staff. The one day organised program schedule was as follows-

The inaugural of the program started at 10:00 A.M. by Program Coordinator NLC with an introductory speech on NLC and setting up of Nature Conservation Club at school.

After that a documentary on NLC was presented to provide a details of ongoing activities and works under NLC. A follow up power point presentation on the objective and activities of Nature Conservation Club was presented by NLC team member. Likely activities that can be carried out by club members were explained. A second presentation on Biodiversity profile of Assam was presented by Program Assistant, NLC.

In a second phase of the program the students were taken for exposure visit inside NLC Ex- situ conservation site trail. Various field based activities along the trail such as experiencing and feeling the nature from close proximity was performed. Also additional activities identified for the trail like fallen tree ecosystem, butterfly garden, fern patches were shown to the students. After the nature walk along the trail the students were taken around zoo to see various birds and animals.

AWARENESS CUM NATURE TRAIL PANTAN HIGH SCHOOL NATURE CONSERVATION CLUB Venue: NLC Ex-Situ Conservation Site, Assam State Zoo Date :10th May, 2019

The NLC-Assam organised an awareness cum nature trail program for Pantan High School Nature Conservation Club (NʹCC) on 10th May 2019 with an aim to create biodiversity awareness among students, teachers and forest officials present in the program. The 5 member -NLC team visited the Assam State Zoo at 9:30 AM arranged accordingly for the program. The program was attended by 34 members including students and teaching staff. The one day program schedule was as follows-

The registration procedure started from 9:30 AM for the students of Nature Conservation Club. The distribution of pen, pencil, notepad, cap and badge were done along with registration.

The inaugural of the program started at 10:00 A.M. with an introductory speech on Nature Learning Centre delivered by Program Coordinator NLC.

A briefing on the necessity of formation of Nature Conservation Club in remote forest fringe school was also explained. After that a documentary on Nature Learning Centre was highlighted on ongoing activities and works under NLC. A follow up power point presentation on the objectives and likely activities that can be carried out by club members were explained. A second presentation on Biodiversity profile of Assam was presented by Program Assistant, NLC. The activity book of NLC for students was also explained in the program.

EXPOSURE VISIT AND WORKSHOP KULSI JANAJATIYA HIGH SCHOOL NATURE CONSERVATION CLUB Venue: NLC Ex-Situ Conservation Site, Assam State Zoo Date: 17th June, 2019

The workshop cum exposure visit was organised by NLC, Assam for Kulsi Janajatiya High School NʹCC on 17th June 2019 held at Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden auditorium. The program was attended by total 40 members consisting of student’s teachers and forest officials.

The program started by a brief note about the aims and objectives of Nature Learning Centre and the motive behind formation of NCC in remote forest fringe school across the state. The likely activities that can be taken up by the club members were also highlighted. A second audio visual presentation on the Biodiversity profile of Assam was presented with emphasizing on Climate Action plan for an eco- friendly lifestyle to be followed.

At the second half a workshop on Solid Waste Management was held by resource person invited for the program. The workshop started by an audio visual presentation on a basic concept of solid waste, waste segregation and dumping techniques. The discussion highlighted some interesting facts like to replace our EGO into ECO. The hands on experience on recycling of plastic waste materials were demonstrated like making a useful product out of waste e.g. making tubs, pen stand from disposal bottles, using of old clothes as material for handmade bags and so on other ideas. An interaction session was held with the students where many ideas on the solid waste management were discussed right from the initiative that needs to be taken by us starting from household level, villages and schools. After a light refreshment and lunch the students were taken to NLC ex-situ conservation site for a field based nature activity like identification of medicinal plants, demonstration of vermicomposting procedure, and learning various characteristics of epiphytes plants e.g. orchids and other succulent plants, Overall the program was successful in creating enthusiast among the student stakeholders.
