President’s Message

Hello Everyone,

I had the opportunity to attend and help out at the TFSRI Auction this past weekend. There was a good cross-section of lots and crowd, so the prices held to the end. I probably spent more at this auction than any in a number of years. Please get out and support your sister clubs as bidders, vendors, and don't be afraid to ask to help, the time passes quickly and you just might have fun and learn something in the process.

Speaking of having fun; our hobby is suppose to be fun, if you are not having fun, then you aren't doing it right! Being president of the NEC, gives me the opportunity to speak to the officers of the clubs. There appears to be a lot of churn is some of the clubs, which if left unchecked, will threaten the integrity of these clubs. My advice, is to step back and think about my statement at the beginning of this paragraph. Put politics and rivalries aside for the sake of your respective clubs. Our hobby in general is experiencing some rough times and the last thing we need is to lose more clubs...

We're coming into the auction/show season, so please watch the NEC calendar for upcoming club events...

NEC Convention Update

Convention Theme: We have a theme! The theme submissions were voted upon at yesterday’s General Election. Thank you to all who submitted theme ideas – there were nine submissions.

The 2014 NEC Convention Theme is: Fins with a Flair!

Put your thinking caps on and start designing your logo submission.

Logo Contest Rules The Deadline for submission is 11:59pm Saturday, October 26, 2013!! The Logo you design should incorporate this year’s theme, “Fins with a Flair!” into a fishy design, representative of a Convention. It does not have to include the dates of the convention (March 28-30, 2014) nor the fact that this will be the 39th convention, but you may include this information in the design if you wish.

1. Artist must be a member in good standing of an NEC member club. Entry must be original artwork. (Never used before). If you incorporate copywritten material, you must obtain and provide to the NEC evidence that you have obtained permission to use the image(s). 2. Entry must be submitted by the artist. Please send a non-signed copy. Your signature can be added after the voting, or you may send a signed copy in addition if you prefer. 3. The design should follow the theme of this year’s banquet, “Fins with a Flair!” 4. Please submit a color version. Four color maximum please. Black outlining, if used, also counts as one color. White is also considered a color. (Should the logo be printed on a dark-colored shirt, the entire logo image will be printed in white, with the other colors silkscreened over it.) Please avoid shading as it will not reproduce as you intend it to on the T-shirts.

The winning logo will be decided by popular vote through the NEC Convention Website November 1-15, 2013. It will appear on the Website, the cover of the Annual Convention Program, the Registration Flier, on the Convention T-shirts, and may be used in any/all NEC Convention publicity. Part or all of the logo may be used on the registration button and it may be modified to fit the button.

Note that the artist may recommend a color for the t-shirt, but the final color may be decided by the NEC Convention Committee.

The winner will receive a free registration for the 39th Annual Convention, a free convention T- shirt, and a free banquet ticket (all non-transferable).

The deadline for submission is 11:59pm Saturday, October 26, 2013. All entries must be received via email by Leslie Dick, by this date/time and the subject of the email must be “NEC Logo Entry.” You will receive a reply stating that your entry was received – if you do not

receive a reply, it is your responsibility to send the email again within the next 24 hours to ensure it was received. Late entries can NOT be accepted.

Please email questions and your logo submission to Convention Chair Leslie Dick at [email protected] .

The NEC James J. White Memorial Conservation Fund

Dear Sir/Madam

The NEC Conservation Committee was established to help conservation efforts through fundraising and donations to well-established and working conservation groups. For several years now the Committee has hosted a silent auction at the Annual NEC Convention to benefit organizations that are involved in conservation.

The past year the NEC has chose two very exciting programs for support from the JJW Memorial Conservation Fund.

Indonesian Marine Ornamental Symposium (LINI)

Established 2008 by a small group of dedicated professionals, LINI is one of the few Indonesian non- profits currently working to promote sustainable fisheries in Indonesia, and the only one to have developed and maintained a database on ornamental fisheries for the marine aquarium trade. Together with their partners, LINI trainers have worked with over 500 marine ornamental fish collectors to adopt best practices and develop sustainable fisheries throughout Indonesia. LINI has also worked together closely with fishermen's groups in northern Bali to pilot reef rehabilitation programs.

Conservation Aquariums in the Classroom

The New England Aquarium's Teacher Resource Center will hold a training program for school teachers within the NEC region. Teachers will be trained in the basics to establish and maintain healthy and exiting classroom aquariums. Program participants will be encouraged to keep fish that have been the focus of previous NEC conservation awards (C.A.R.E.S, Project Piaba, etc.) and other aquarium fish with conservation related stories that can be used as the basis for lesson plans in the classrooms. In addition to showcasing examples of the environmental benefits associate with the aquarium hobby, students will be connected with in a way that will inspire the next generation of hobbyists.

We are asking you to consider donating any rare or unusual fish, new or gently used equipment, dry goods or aquarium related art or books. Both saltwater and freshwater will be gratefully accepted.

With your help we can continue to provide support for present and future projects.

Thank you

The Stuart M. Grant Cichlid Conservation Fund, 2011 Summer Fish Tubs & Water Gardens: The Summer Tub Teardown

Part V in our Continuing Series on Small Scale Ponds By Ted Coletti

Ah, September. A joyous time for many parents as the savior known as “school” returns. A sad time for the rest us as we say goodbye to the long summer evenings, vacations, and all-around “slowerpaceity.” For summer fish tubbers in and around Zone 6, September is a mixed bag of emotions that begins right after that last hot dog on Labor Day through to that first pumpkin put out in October. We lament for the fish we ran out of time to spawn. We anticipate the discoveries we will drain from the murky depths. And most of all, we grow anxious around when to take in the fish. And what about the plants? And the empty tubs over winter? Will the fish adjust to tank conditions after being au natureal for so long? These and other concerns will be addressed in this, the final installment in our series on Summer Tubbin. And so we begin (and end)...

When to Do the Deed...No issue provides more anxiety to a summer tubber as “when to take the fish in.” It need not be. Your fish have learned to adjust (re-adjust) to fluctuating temperatures all season. They won’t curl up and die, or “Ich out” at the first cool night. For tropicals, I shoot for the first WEEKEND before September 16th here in Zone 6 New Jersey. That is the earliest possible frost date for my region, and I need a full day starting in the AM to sort through my tubs. If you live in a Shore or Gateway county, your date will be a week or so later; in Mountain towns, earlier. Check with your local county cooperative extension office. Using the Earliest First Frost Date as a guide also allows me to bring my fish into the September fish club meeting for BAP and auction. MOST LIKELY the first frost date will be later, however. In recent years, I have been able to keep fish out through September with no problems. Cool water tropicals through October. Native fish even later. NJASer Dean Majorino has pulled Paradise Fish from water that formed surface ice over night. But it can go the other way, too. About 10 years ago we had nights in the 30’s for three days straight starting around September 13th. I lost fish including guppies, My goodeids were none the worse for wear, however. So set your target dates based on your (1) species tolerance and (2) weekend prior to Earliest First Frost Date, then (3) CHECK THE WEATHER FORECAST daily to make adjustments + / - days. You may need to change your plains and call in sick one day if the weather (and your luck) turns.

Indoor Prep...you’re gonna need holding tanks for your fish. Either outside with a heater or indoors. At least until the next NJAS meeting or auction. Plan ahead!

Three Buckets... When netting out fish, I prefer to use three well-rinsed white utility or new white/clear plastic “paint pails”. The white color helps me to count, sort, and pull out dead fish more easily. I also have a garden tote handy for all the muck and decayed matter I will invariably scoop out.

The Right Nets...the Fall Netting can be an exhausting and frustrating task, filled with both surprise and disappointment. Your choice of nets can turn this chore into a less tiring and tedious task. Aquarium fish nets, even the large expensive ones, just can’t handle the “trawling” action needed to completely net out a tub with all its heavy muck. They are too slow and eventually bend and break. Therefore, I advise everyone who plans to do this to purchase a Laguna Pond Skimmer Net. This black mesh net with the aluminum handle has been a godsend to me and others I have turned on to it. The Laguna net has little “drag” due to its shallow and more porous netting. Only small fry can escape it, and even then, the muck you’ll be taking up with the fish will enable you to pluck out most of them too. The net’s shape allows you to easily sort through muck and fish, and it can be rested over a tub’s lip to make the sorting even easier. You’ll also need 1 medium to large, fine mesh aquarium or pond net , and 1 medium fine mesh or brine shrimp net as well. The Fall Netting Process: Step by Step 1. Remove all the plants, shaking and tilting them as you lift to let out any fish that may be in the pots. 2. lower the water level in your tub by 1/3 using a pitcher or one of fish pails, scooping from the surface. This minimizes jumpers and concentrates the catch in a smaller area. Pour this water into the holding tanks you have prepared to at least 50% full. You will inadvertently catch some fish this way. Residual water can be used around your garden. 3. Take your 3 pails, fill them halfway with clear tub water with a measured amount of Ultimate® (the best water conditioner hands down and with more patents), and place them right next to the tub. 4. Run your skimmer net through the tub, using the famed “figure 8” motion that Rosario LaCorte taught me years ago as the fastest way to net anything out of an enclosed space. Another good move is to rake the bottom of the tub and lift the net up quickly. Just don’t ram the net against the sides too quickly as you may injure or kill some fish (especially juvies). Keep the net hovered over the tub when sorting. There will be some jumpers! 5. Use the other fine or brine shrimp net to quickly transfer fish from the skimmer net to the pails, covering the brine net with your hand as you transfer. I use one pail for the original seed fish, another for juvenilles (BAP fish), and another for fry that need further grow-out indoors. If you find predatory insect larvae, dispose of or relocate to a natural water body. 6. Rinse and strain each netful of muck a few times to make sure no fish are hiding in the debris. Then discard to the garden tote and spread around your yard to enrich your soil. 7. After all the trawling and muck removal is completed, finish off with the medium- large fine mesh aquarium or pond net. Just a few rakes and figure 8’s should reveal if any fish have been left behind.

Acclimating the Fish...Slowly add conditioned tap water to your tanks if 50% full, over the course of 2 days. If full, do a PARTIAL water change of 50% after a day or two. Fungus is the most common acclimation problem encountered when fish move from outdoors to indoors. Keeping the temperature at or above their tub temp helps.

Keep Enjoying Your Pond in the Fall...There is no reason to tear down your tub just because the fish are gone. Your plants will still be growing, and the more they are allowed to naturally go dormant, the better they will come back in the Spring. Waterlilies will often keep blooming through October or to the first “hard” frost.

Overwintering Your Plants...This assumes you are using my potting style outlined in earlier installments of this series. Deep liner pond owners often just place their plants at the bottom of their ponds for winter where the water does not freeze solid, or dig their tubers into the surrounding soil. Here’s what this summer tubber does: 1. Discard any remaining water hyacinth. Not worth trying to keep this alive. It will cost you more in electricity to even attempt. Other floating plants you may want to attempt in Tropical emergent plants should be taken inside or disposed of at this time. Most make decent houseplants if kept in very moist soil near a sunny window. 2. Remove all Hardy emergent plants and allow to drain for 1 hour on the ground, preferably something that drains well like a gravel walkway, sand, etc. 3. Prune all foliage and roots with a utility or sharp knife, or pruning shears. I prefer to use a retractable utility knife with the extendable breakaway blades. Wear work gloves and watch your fingers! Dig the cuttings into your annual beds or compost pile to add nitrogen. 4. Take a standard fish box and line with a few sheets of newspaper. Four of my recommended 7” mesh pots fit snugly into these boxes. Replace the lid and close the box. Store in the coldest part of your home or garden shed where temps do not go below freezing. 5. For Hardy waterlilies, I prefer to remove the entire tuber and discard the soil to prevent rot and stop any pathogen from returning. I prune away the roots and floating and emerging leaves. DO NOT PRUNE the “indicator leaves;” tiny leaves that stay near the rootstock and tell the plant when it is time to start growing again. Place the WET tuber in a fish bag at least twice the size of the tuber and add enough peat moss to just cover the tuber. Add an air pocket like you do when bagging fish, tie tightly, and shake gently. Store in styros like the plants above. 6. Tropical waterlilies are a challenge. Storage methods vary. Most folks I know just re- purchase every year. If you want to try overwintering: a. Non-viviparous varieties develops “korms;” hazelnut to acorn sized hard round nuggets that develop into new plants. I like to place these in a well- lighted aquarium and have them develop their short lily pads and roots over the winter. Looks nice. Another method is to store them dark in damp sand in bottles at about 50 degrees. b. Viviparous waterlilies can be potted in small mesh pots and placed in your aquarium. Results vary. c. Any waterlily may be stored underwater in an indoor tub with a strong strip light over them. Hardies should be maintained above freezing, and Tropicals above 50 degrees. Results vary.

Final Tub Teardown...Storing your tubs for next year is a function of the quality of plastic used in their construction. Your main goal is to protect them from the bitter winter winds and freezing temperatures that make most plastic brittle and prone to cracking. Buried tubs of any type can be left in the ground. I prefer not to cover them as they are hazard if someone steps into them (esp. when there is snow cover). Place a child’s inflatable play ball in the tub to equalize expansion during freeze-thaw cycles. For free-standing tubs, from low-end to high-end:  Rope handled and other home utility tubs: store inside your house, garage, or shed.  Pre-form patio ponds and tubs: store inside, or outside upside down or on their side covered with a tarp, preferable in an area near a wall where it will be warmer. Place in an area where they won’t be accidently kicked or fill with water.  TuffTubs® Rubber Agricultural tanks: though durable, these have been reported to crack in winter. Store like a pre-form.  Rubbermaid® Stock Tanks: these are injected molded material designed to withstand cold winters that freeze them solid. If still concerned, you can place plywood over their tops held down by a brick.

That’s it! Your season is officially over. You now embark on an Autumn and Winter in the fishroom, and dreaming of next year’s summer tub season. I hope this series of articles has been helpful and inspired more of my NJASers to try their hand at this ancient tradition in the keeping of ornamental fishes.
