Prof. Spiros MAKRIS Assistant Professor in Political Theory University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, GREECE Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT If postmodern Jean Baudrillard (1929-2007) could be defined as a theorist of power - to the extent that for some this is a contradiction by definition, although something very similar takes place in the case of Michel Foucault, he could be defined as a theorist of meta-power in the globalized era of turbo-capitalism. In his late texts (2005), which were published in 2010, the eminent French philosopher builds a provocative theory about power by using the classic concepts of domination and hegemony within the contemporary social, economic, political and ideological context of neoliberal globalization. In these papers, he analyzes in-depth the meta- power of hegemony in comparison with the power of domination. Actually, by signifying the critical passage of postwar capitalism from the phase of production to the phase of consumption, as Zygmunt Bauman does in his relevant work, Baudrillard formulates a meta-power theory as the equivalent of what he defines as turbo-capitalism. What is at stake is no longer the conventional issues of state sovereignty, Marx-inspired concept of alienation and Critical Theory-like negative dialectics but the crucial questions of hegemony, hostage and evilness. In short, Jean Baudrillard builds a new ontological and by extension disciplinary and theoretical field concerning global power, where the ‘Empire of Good’, or turbo-capitalism in his own terminology, is reborn in a totally catastrophic way (see simulation in the sense of a capitalist hypocrisy) either as an ‘Axis of Evil’ or as the ‘problem of terror’ (see simulacrum in the sense of a Lacanian stage of image within which turbo-capitalism represses, through a Freudian process of repelling, its unfamiliar self/i.e. -

ABSTRACT Starting from an analysis of two diagrams for 10 classes of signs designed by Peirce in 1903 and 1908 (CP 2.264 and 8.376), this paper sets forth the basis for a diagrammatic understanding of all kinds of classifications based on his triadic model of a sign. Our main argument is that it is possible to observe a common pattern in the arrangement of Peirce’s diagrams of 3-trichotomic classes, and that this pattern should be extended for the design of diagrams for any n-trichotomic classification of signs. Once this is done, it is possible to diagrammatically compare the conflicting claims done by Peircean scholars re- garding the divisions of signs into 28, and specially into 66 classes. We believe that the most important aspect of this research is the proposal of a consolidated tool for the analysis of any kind of sign structure within the context of Peirce’s classifications of signs. Journalism and Mass Communication, July 2016, Vol. 6, No. 7, 420-425 doi: 10.17265/2160-6579/2016.07.006 D DAVID PUBLISHING Jean Baudrillard’s Encounter With Anthropology: Toward A Radical Understanding of Marxism and Terrorism Gerry Coulter Bishop’s University, Sherbrooke, Canada Jean Baudrillard (1929-2007), a leading contemporary theorist from the 1970s to the present, was deeply influenced by anthropological thought. As an outcome of his prolonged encounter with anthropology he was able to devise a unique approach to the world. This approach enabled him to play a leading role in surpassing Marxist thought and in explaining contemporary terrorist attacks such as those of September 11, 2001 in the United States. Baudrillard, who is often correctly seen as making a contribution to contemporary anthropology, is also someone who is deeply indebted to anthropology. This aspect of Baudrillard is less well understood. Keywords: Baudrillard, anthropology, symbolic exchange, reversibility, terrorism, Marxism Introduction Jean Baudrillard is widely known to have developed a unique and radical approach to contemporary theory. For example, following the attacks on the United States of September 11, 2001, Baudrillard hypothesized that the attacks were one event in what he called the Fourth World War (the Cold War being the Third World War). According to his view, terrorism can be viewed as a symbolic exchange wherein a group of people long humiliated may return the humiliation by way of a terrorist attack. This view was not intended to support terror but rather, to offer a new way of understanding it beyond traditional journalism and foreign policy analysis. -

The Commutation Test and Chris Bacon’s Score for Source Code as a Framework for Film Music Pedagogy Aaron Ziegel, Towson University he cinema, whether experienced at the neighborhood multiplex or streamed at home, is arguably the medium through which today’s col- lege-age Americans are most likely to encounter newly composed sym- Tphonic music. Given the ubiquity of the film-viewing experience, students are often eager to learn the tools and methodologies that can equip them to criti- cally assess and more fully comprehend the function of music in movies. The filmSource Code (2011), directed by Duncan Jones and scored by Chris Bacon, provides a particularly effective starting point through which this process can begin.1 This article will discuss the pedagogical potential found in the film’s main titles and the impact of applying a commutation test to this sequence. Although here I address one specific example, the methodology of the commu- tation test is easily adaptable to other circumstances, as the theoretical foun- dation will make clear. While variations on the commutation test are a regular occurrence in many film music classrooms, this essay aims to present an intro- ductory primer that may be of use to instructors interested in an entry point for incorporating film music studies into their teaching. With that in mind, the appendix presents one suggestion for how to create film clips for classroom use. The value of this classroom activity extends beyond providing students with an engaging and memorable learning experience. By situating this analysis I wish to express my gratitude to the many students at Towson University whose feedback and enthusiastic classroom participation, along with suggestions from the anonymous reviewers, helped me to refine the pedagogical approach described in this essay. -

Late capitalism, or neoliberalism, produces a society characterized by return to free market principles of the 19 th century and cultivates a strong return to rugged individualism. (Kapur) Postmodern cultural logic emphasizes visual representations of culture as a dominant cultural determinant. It is this framework that opens a discussion of Mad Men, a series that uses a mid century advertising firm as a filter for a history that is reduced to recirculated images. III, WINTER, 2010 AND EXISTENTIAL SEMIOTICS From his earliest writings Jean Baudrillard has been a media provocateur of such Nietzschean brilliance that it has blinded many theorists to the depth and originality of his critique of the news business and television in the DisInformation Age. In addition to smarting at his accurate and aphoristic barbs about current affairs production, mainstream media feels even stronger resentment at his dismissal of the industry’s claims to be a major force in shaping public consciousness. For Baudrillard, scientific jargon, Wall Street, disaster movies and pornography have deeper impact on our imaginations than the news industry. Television and written media, he wrote in 1970, have become narcotic and tranquilizing for consumers in their daily servings of scary news and celebrity fantasies. Only 9/11, he later declared with his usual withering acerbity, has been able to break through the non- event barrier erected by media to the world (2001).1 To recognize the accuracy of Baudrillard’s daily observations, therefore, it is no surprise that we need to turn to a financial statistician, Nassim Nicholas Taleb. -

The examples of simulacra and hyperreality in the novel are mentioned and discussed. In addition, Baudrillard theory is used for explaining the events. The way the real is replaced by signs and the way hyperreal is created and influenced in the novel is also explained. Finally, a conclusion of the chapter is presented. Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake is a post-apocalyptic novel and has many similarities with The Road. The protagonist of the story is Snowman who used to be called Jimmy before the catastrophe. Snowman lives near some creatures that are called Crakers. They were created by Jimmy’s Friend, Crake. The progresses in science results in the catastrophe as Carke creates a disease that kills everybody expect him, Jimmy and Oryx. Crake kills Oryx and Jimmy kills Crake and thus he is left alone. At the end he sees several humans and contemplates killing them, but it is not revealed whether he kills them or not (Brooks, 2010). Baudrillard’s hyperreality and simulacra are elaborated in his book Simulacra and Simulation. Raking up the term hyperreality from a movement in modem art, Baudrillard identified the dissolution of relations between subject and object, real and fake, true and false, in the triumph of consumer capitalism. -

1 Journal of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Works Volume 7 December 2020 On the Postmodern Condition Sean Carroll Abstract University of Texas at San Antonio As a cultural movement, Postmodernism begun to solidify itself since the 1970s. Despite what some may say of its necessarily unstructured nature, coherent reflection about it is useful. While there is a growing literature on this topic, the present study, as suggested by David Harvey, seeks to use an historical, materialist framework, as developed by Karl Marx, to interpret postmodern culture. To do this, I began with the studies of the substructures of postmodern culture (political-economic and material conditions), and then sought to find reflective cohesion among its ‘aesthetic’ superstructures (social, philosophical, cinematic, literary, and musical) and their underlying conditions. As a result, from these studies, I found that the aesthetic sentiments of postmodern culture quite neatly map onto the material conditions, which inform its context. These sentiments imply a complicit disposition towards many aspects of late capitalism (such as consumerism and alienation). These findings are significant because it forces postmodernism to take a more honest look at itself, and become self-aware of its implications. My findings imply that if postmodern sentiments truly want to harbor an activism toward the status quo, it must first realign itself with more unifying attitudes. While a single resolution has yet to be concluded, the present study provides some general directions -

The problem is not so much that I do not know what I think and feel. Instead, it is that I think and feel many different and conflicting things2 and I do not have the capacity to simply sort them out. Sometimes, I let the different voices engage each other in a dialogue and find an intrasubjective solution.
