70 Great Reasons to STAYCATION in A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Godalming Town Council is delighted to launch its annual Staycation with an even bigger range of exciting and fun activities for individuals and families to try.

The great thing about Staycation is that the majority of these activities are either COMPLETELY FREE, or at a specially discounted STAYCATION price and all events are really close to home, so you don’t have to worry about expensive travelling costs.

New activities for 2018 include a creative writing workshop (just bring along your imagination); three street dance classes, or for the less energetic amongst us you will be able to try an authentic, open-air contemplative Tai Chi class by the river, or perhaps a gentle hatha yoga class in . There are various workshops including crazy cooking and singing. There will also be a crafts workshop, at which you will be able to make miniature wooden beach hut using environmentally friendly materials. Come along and enjoy an afternoon of inter-generational reminiscing, tea, chat and watch a short film about the Coronation Day; play traditional games and hear a local resident talk about her war-time experiences as a child. Pop along to a WI meeting to paint some Mandala Stones, which are the latest trend in the craft world to go viral, or come and learn to play cards and/or bridge - a wonderful opportunity to re-introduce card games back into your families.

Become an Official Tree Guardian! Roots for the Future is holding an inter-generational drop-in workshop. Decorate a pot, plant tree seeds and learn how to take care of the trees until they are big enough to plant in the ground.

The Town Council is delighted to welcome back regular favourites such as canoeing, tennis, swimming, fishing, bowling, brass band taster sessions, football coaching including a chance to play on Godalming Town Football Club’s ground, ballerina workshops, cricket, walks, flower arranging, ukulele lessons and even two cycle rides including one for “portly dads”!!!

Staycation week starts on Saturday, 4 August with the TST Staycation Live Music Festival at the Phillips Memorial Park. On Saturday, 11 August, Godalming Town Council’s “DOGALMING” returns to Aarons Hill Recreation Ground – bring your four-legged best friend and enter into the fun. Prizes kindly donated by Nestle Purina – see the Dogalming page for full details. Canine Partners will be demonstrating how their amazing charity transforms the lives of people with physical disabilities. There will also be a family fete with side shows, Punch & Judy, children’s rides, hog roast, face-painting, tea tent and more.

Finally, and importantly, I’d like to thank the many organisations and individuals who have contributed so generously in helping to create an exciting Staycation programme. Without their generosity it would not have been possible to have included so many activities for all age ranges.

Browse the programme to plan your week and don’t forget to mention Staycation when you turn up for an activity. With our unique shops and restaurants, our wealth of pubs and delightful walks in our picturesque countryside and STAYCATION – why go anywhere else?!

My family and I are looking forward to seeing you during Staycation. We wish you happy holidays!
