RONCALLI • SACRED HEART CENTRAL • CHARTRAND • KENNEDY MEMORIAL POINT OF VIEW You Shall be Called by a New Name Rev. Robert Robeson, VF, Ph.D., M.Ed., Interim President

Nations shall behold your vindication, and all kings your glory; You shall be called by a new name bestowed by the mouth of the LORD. You shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the LORD, a royal diadem in the hand of your God. Isaiah 62:2-3 The prophet Isaiah proclaimed these words at a time when the people of Israel were held captive in Babylon. It was probably the lowest point of 4 Israel’s history; enslaved, dejected, hopeless. The Lord made Isaiah a voice of hope; and in many ways, a reminder to the Jewish people that they were extraordinarily blessed because of their relationship with Him. For the past five years, I have had the privilege of serving as the Pastor at Holy Name, and for three of those years I served as the Dean of the Indianapolis South Deanery. Now, for the past six months, I have been honored to serve as the interim president of Roncalli High School. I have seen firsthand how this community has been a “glorious crown in the hand of the Lord.” Working with our amazing students and faculty at Roncalli gives me hope; hope that the God can use imperfect human beings to accomplish something beautiful; hope that the grace and power of Jesus Christ can bring healing and love out of pain and suffering; hope that we can each be transformed into “a royal diadem in the hand of our God,” when we fully embrace our mission to form young men and women in the Catholic faith. Roncalli is a very special place – but it is more than a place; it must be a deeply committed community of Christian disciples who understand that everything we do is rooted in the mission of Christ and His Church. In the classroom or on the football field, in the auditorium or in the cafeteria, Jesus Christ must animate our lives and our actions. If Angelo Roncalli were here today, he would be the first to assert that our deepest identity must serve this mission as disciples of Jesus Christ. I know that there are many alumni and students who have been disappointed about the decision to change the Roncalli nickname. We have been the Rebels for the past 50 years, and there are so many who are proud to be part of this tradition. At the same time, the conversation

UPDATE MAGAZINE WINTER 2020 about changing our nickname has been going on for at least 25 years. The decision to change is not a response to a “cancel culture”, and it is not a result of anything other than a deeply held conviction to conform our community to the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. There are many who do not understand the nickname and see it as a symbol of the Confederacy and associate it with slavery and oppression. As difficult as this may be for many of our alumni and students, we must acknowledge that Rebels carries with it some deep and hurtful associations for a great many people in our society - regardless of how we understand it, or how we intend it to be interpreted or understood. Of course, we don’t understand it to be hurtful or divisive, but many do - including people from other schools that we play, vendors that we do business with, and even families that are considering sending their children to Roncalli. It shapes how people perceive us - in a manner that doesn’t reflect our commitment to serving Christ. The intent here is not to erase the past 50 years, where we have been proud to be Rebels, but rather, to move forward into the next 50 years with a name that better reflects who we are and how we are committed to living in a manner that reflects our mission. I am convinced, as are many others in the Roncalli 5 community, that this is the right thing to do. Please keep in mind that changing our nickname does not change who we are, and it does not change the extraordinary experiences that we all have had as members of this Roncalli family. It does not change the way we serve our mission as a Catholic high school, advancing the Gospel message of Jesus Christ and forming young people to live their faith in a rapidly changing world. What it will do is better reflect our mission; personified by our patron, Angelo Roncalli. He was a visionary leader who was deeply rooted in his love for Jesus Christ, his devotion to the Catholic faith and his respect for the dignity of all people. These qualities are what formed him into the great saint that we venerate today. As we approach the Christmas season, I am truly grateful for this Roncalli family. I have seen, first hand, the deep bonds of friendship and love that are formed in this community. I have witnessed the passionate commitment that so many of our Roncalli graduates display for this great community, and it fills me with hope. As Isaiah prophesied about the nation of Israel, You shall be called by a new name bestowed by the mouth of the LORD. You shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the LORD, a royal diadem in the hand of your God. As we prepare our hearts for the birth of the Christ Child, we give thanks for this Roncalli family; this glorious crown, this royal diadem that fills our hearts with hope for the future. St. John XXIII…………..Pray for us! RONCALLI • SACRED HEART CENTRAL • CHARTRAND • KENNEDY MEMORIAL ADVANCEMENT ANGLE Lifelong Roncalli Connections - EVERYDAY, EVERYWHERE Terese R. Carson, Hon’18, Vice President for Institutional Advancement

As a lifelong Ohio State Buckeye, it is a common known fact that you are supposed to be able to go anywhere in the world and shout O-H and someone will shout back I-O. Trust me, I have tried this in many places, all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe. I have tested this theory time and time again, and it has always worked, always! I am never afraid to test this theory either, no matter where I am. O-H……...I-O. And I am publicly apologizing to my family and friends that I constantly do this! Another common known fact, is that the connections that one makes being a part of the Roncalli community, are lifelong and far-reaching. The same holds true, and in my many travels, I am certain to see and meet someone that is connected to Roncalli….. a former faculty or staff member, a current student, a former or current parent or grandparent, or an ALUM! Since I proudly wear my Roncalli spirit wear and display Roncalli on my vehicle and luggage, it opens conversations about my beloved Roncalli. Inevitably I then discover that this person is connected to Roncalli and is happy to share their experiences with me. The parents and grandparents always ask me if I recall their children and grandchildren, and they are excited to tell me what they were involved in during their years at RHS. Of course, faculty and staff have great stories of classroom 6 happenings and know the rich history of our school. But the alumni……. The alums have the best memories of their time at Roncalli! If I can’t remember, they make me guess their class year. Our alums are willing to share stories about their favorite class or teacher, stories about their extracurricular activities and their deep love for their alma mater. What’s extra interesting to me about all of this is that my daughters (Roncalli Class of 2008 and 2010) would tell you the same thing! They always come into contact with someone that is connected to Roncalli no matter where they are in the world and in their professional lives. They have both come to realize that they have made lifelong friends and connections because they attended RHS. Their network is literally every single Roncalli alum! Others find this Roncalli network of connections both interesting and funny! I can go out to dinner with my family or friends, and they prepare themselves that we are going to run into someone that I know from Roncalli. It has become a long standing joke…….how long will it take for me to see someone that I know that is part of the Roncalli family? And who will it be? And how long will the conversation last? But, it is never a joke about how much this person loves Roncalli! My family and friends know how unique it is to be a part of this community. I thank God every day for these connections and for all of you! I know how truly blessed we all are to be a part of this family. Forever Roncalli,

Terese R. Carson, Hon’18 Vice President for Institutional Advancement

It is important for signs and images of our Catholic faith to be visibly present - to remind us of why we are here.
