Like all governments, the Indian government has come up with various projects for the improvement and conservation of animals in the country. One successful project that you should know about is Project Elephant.

In 1992, Project Elephant was launched to ensure the long-term survival of the endangered population of elephants. Initially, the project was implemented in 13 states. Financial and technical assistance was given to the states for doing Census, training of staffs, etc. Later, the government gave some support to Maharashtra and as well. The main objective of Project Elephant is to protect the elephants and their habitat. Moreover, the project also tries to identify the human- animal conflict.

Elephant Corridor

Elephant Corridor is the narrow stretch of land located inside the forest and it connects the elephant population with larger habitats. There are in total 88 elephant corridors present in India. But the construction of building, mines, roads etc has threatened these elephant corridors. Furthermore, poaching is yet another serious problem. Because of this, has undertaken several programs and initiatives to take care of these issues.

Haathi Mere Saathi

In 2011, the Ministry of Environment and Forest launched the campaign 'Hathi Mere Sathi'. The purpose was to improve the conservation of elephants in India. There

were around 8 countries who participated in this conversation. These countries were India, Congo, Indonesia, Kenya, Botswana, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. The concern was to protect three species i.e. Asian elephant, Asian bush elephant, and African forest elephant.

Aims of Project Elephant

 To maintain ecological restoration, scientific development, eco-development, stop poachers from killing elephant etc.  Creation of elephant reserves throughout the country.
