Storage and Disposal of Used Hazardous Equipment Business Operators Are Now Subject to Regulations!

（Outline of Regulations） 〇 According to the revision of the Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act（effective as of April 1, 2018※1）, business operators who intend to conduct the storage or disposal of specific items（Used Hazardous Equipment※）that were previously not subject to regulations are now required to comply with the new standards. ※1：Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act

○ Operators subject to the regulations are required to submit a notification to the prefecture.

○ New standards ※2 are stipulated for the storage and disposal of used household appliances. ※2：For business operators who will conduct the storage and disposal of used hazardous equipment, please refer to the addendum regarding storage and disposal regulations. ※（Used Hazardous Equipment） This includes items that are specified under the government ordinance deemed as valuable but are potentially deterimental to one’s health or the environment when improper storage or disposal is performed. ・4 items are subject to the Home Appliance Recycling Law: air conditioners, television sets, refrigerators, and washing machines (certain exemptions for business purposes) ・28 items are subject to the Small Home Appliances Recycling Law: cellular phone handsets, laptops, digital cameras, etc. (certain exemptions for business purposes)
