'Saturday Night Live,' 'Westworld' Lead Emmy Nominations 'Saturday Night Live,' 'Westworld' Lead Emmy Nominations 07.13.2017 Dystopia prevailed at the 69th annual Emmy nominations on Thursday, with HBO's Westworld - about a theme park of the future gone murderously wrong - and Saturday Night Live - mostly about a political system of the present gone insane - leading all series with 22 nominations each. Even without last year's dominant force - Game of Thrones, which returns for a shortened but much anticipated season seven on Sunday - HBO led the pack with 110 nominations overall. Last year's comedy winner, Veep, was again the most nominated comedy with 17 total nods, while Silicon Valley grabbed 10. Five-time winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus was again nominated for playing once and future vice president Selina Meyer, along with previous two-time winner Tony Hale, Matt Walsh and Anna Chlumsky in the supporting actor and actress categories. Last Week Tonight starring John Oliver, nominated outstanding variety talk series, grabbed eight nominations, the most of any show in that category. Last Week Tonight and Oliver will face former fellow Daily Show correspondent Samantha Bee at TBS' Full Frontal, as well as CBS' The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Late Late Show with James Corden, ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! and HBO sibling Real Time with Bill Maher. HBO also cleaned up in the limited series category, with Big Little Lies netting 16 nominations, including acting nods for much of the cast, and The Night Of scoring 13. Star Riz Ahmed is nominated best actor in a limited series in a tough category that includes his co-star, John Tuturro, Benedict Cumberbatch for PBS' Sherlock, Robert De Niro for HBO's Wizard of Lies, Ewan McGregor for Fargo and Geoffrey Rush for playing Albert Einstein in Nat Geo's Genius. Netflix followed HBO with 91 nominations, including 18 for Stranger Things, 13 for The Crown, eight for Master of None, six for House of Cards and five for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Netflix cast members receiving nods include Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright and Michael Kelly for House of Cards, Claire Foy and John Lithgow for The Crown, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin for Grace and Frankie, Asiz Ansari for Master of None, David Harbour and Millie Bobby Brown for Stranger Things and 2015 supporting actress in a comedy winner Uzo Aduba for Orange is the New Black. NBC had a big year, led by Saturday Night Live and This Is Us, which is the first Big Four broadcast drama to be nominated best drama since CBS' The Good Wife in 2011. This Is Us scored nominations for several cast members, including Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia in the best actor category, and Chrissy Metz and Ron Cephas Jones as supporting actress and actor. Saturday Night Live increased its record for total nominations for any show ever with 231. Last year's winner Kate McKinnon, Vanessa Bayer and Leslie Jones all were nominated best supporting actress in a comedy. Alec Baldwin, who spent much of 2016-17 playing Donald Trump, was nominated on the actor side, and Melissa McCarthy, who killed it with her impersonation of White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, was nominated for guest actress in a comedy. Other NBC shows that did well besides Saturday Night Live and This Is Us include The Voice, with eight nods, and Hairspray Live!, with seven. Snapchat also scored its first Emmy nomination for The Voice on Snapchat. FX came in with with 54 nominations, led by Feud: Bette and Joan with 18. Stars Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon will face off against Big Little Lies' Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon as well as Fargo's Carrie Coon and American Crime's Felicity Huffman as best actress in a limited series, making that high-powered category one to watch. Fargo scored 16 nominations. Atlanta - along with creator, executive producer and star Donald Glover - pulled in six nominations. The Americans grabbed four nods, including best drama, and best lead actor and actress nods for Matthew Rhys (also nominated, along with Riz Ahmed, for his guest stint on HBO's Girls) and Keri Russell. The nominees for best drama include Hulu's Handmaid's Tale, Netflix's House of Cards, Netflix's Stranger Things, FX's The Americans, Netflix's The Crown, NBC's This Is Us and HBO's Westworld. On the comedy side, the nominees are FX's Atlanta, ABC's Black-ish, Netflix's Master of None, ABC's Modern Family, HBO's Silicon Valley, Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and last year's winner, HBO's Veep. Nominated limited series are FX's Feud, HBO's Big Little Lies and The Night Of, ABC's American Crime and Nat Geo's Genius. Here are all of the 2017 Emmy nominations.     Shape Shifting for Time Shifting: Weight Loss in the Transmediation of This Is Us Jennifer Lynn Jones, Indiana University Successfully competing in Peak TV requires savvy promotions. Generally, “Peak TV” refers to the saturation of scripted television in this alleged new “Golden Age of Television,” with broadcast networks, cable channels, and stand-alone streaming services competing for ever more elusive viewers. Following the Pearson family and its unconventional triplets, NBC’s hit This Is Us (2016 to current) has distinguished itself in Peak TV by updating the generic conventions of a family soap with a mobile narrative temporality, constantly moving from present to past and, as season two glimpses suggest, into the future, in ways that create experiential and affective convergences between characters. This has given the show an edge in an era when network television has struggled with changing televisual viewing practices marked by both time- and platform-shifting. These relate to another significant aspect, body size: a main storyline involves the corpulence and weight loss of sister Kate, which has likewise necessitated body shaping in the contract of actress Chrissy Metz. The vicissitudes of Metz’s body extend Kate’s story, thus creating textual convergences through the body as a platform for transmediation. This response will consider how Metz’s appearances in mainstream television talk shows contribute to this phenomenon. Metz claims that she “committed to Kate’s evolution” in her audition process knowing that it would involve body shaping.1 “Body shaping” refers to any activity meant to transform the body, whether through diet, exercise, prosthetics, surgery, or cosmetology.
