Dear Brothers and Sisters in ,

Our annual stewardship campaign begins on Sunday, October 6 th . As is our custom, you will be hearing messages and reflections related to the topic of stewardship throughout this period. We will culminate with a covered-dish lunch following the 10:00 AM Mass on Sunday, November 10 th . The members of your Vestry will have pledged by this time, and we ask that everyone do the same. That’s the nuts and bolts. Of course, we should be practicing good stewardship of the gifts God has given us always: 24/7/365. Certainly, that applies to more than our money. Good stewardship is taking care to maintain the buildings and grounds of the church, to protect the environment and all the living creatures that depend on it, and to care not only for our families but for all of God’s children. I am afraid it means practicing the E-Word. You know, evangelism : Know Christ; Make Christ Known. Practicing good stewardship means identifying our spiritual gifts, maintaining our own spiritual and physical health and equipping ourselves to do the work God has given us to do. The reality is that giving of our time and energy is not enough to accomplish the mission. We must also give of our financial gifts. We all know how much God has given us, including his gift of being part of God’s very diverse family at St. Paul’s. As Father Willoughby said re- cently, we need not to focus so much on what we can get from the Church. Instead, we need to pray and ask ourselves what we can give back. This is the time of year to really focus on that praying and asking. I once heard a story about a parish engaged in a stewardship campaign. This church decided to conduct an every-member, door-to-door canvas and asked for volunteers to call on parishioners to discuss pledging. One young man volunteered who was not very articulate and a bit odd in the eyes of many. Some of the Stewardship Committee members doubted that he would be able to hold a conversation, but the young man was very eager to help so they assigned him to a partner thinking the partner could do the talking. At the end of the campaign, the young man and his partner had collected pledge cards from every single person and family they visited. What’s more, everyone they had called on increased the amount pledged from the previous year. The committee chair called the young man’s partner aside and asked how this had hap- pened. His partner reported that everywhere they went, before he could do more than shake hands and say hello, the young man held out a pledge card and said, “We’re supposed to give ten percent.” Then he just waited. We’re supposed to give ten percent. Marsha Tolbert, Senior Warden
