Sam Quinn's Posthumous Visit With Gram Parsons by Carole Perkins 2008 Sam Quinn and his band, the everybodyfields, recently stayed at The Joshua Tree Inn where legendary singer/songwriter Gram Parsons died from a drug and alcohol overdose in 1973 at the age of 26. Quinn, Jill Andrews, Josh Oliver, and Tom Pryor, comprise the everybodyfields whose music has been described as, "a fresh set of fingerprints in the archives of bluegrass, country, and folk music." The band was touring the west coast when Quinn discovered the band was booked to stay at The Joshua Tree Inn. The Joshua Tree Inn is a simple but mythical motel in California, about 140 miles east of Los Angeles. It was popular in the fifties for Hollywood rabble rousers and trendy in the seventies for rockers and celebrities. These days, the main attraction is the room Parsons passed away in, room Number Eight, where thousands of fans pilgrimage every year to pay homage to Parsons. Quinn says he's been a fan of Parsons since he was eighteen but never dreamed he'd be sharing a wall with Parson's old motel room one day. "It was really far out to find out we would be staying in the Joshua Tree Inn. I had just woken up in our van that was parked about a mile away. I knew we'd be in the vicinity of where Gram died but sharing a wall with Gram, no, not a chance," he says. "So we walk into the lobby and the lady at the front desk gives me a key to room Number Seven, the room right next to the one Gram died in. -

BIOGRAPHY EMMYLOU HARRIS A 13-time Grammy winner and Billboard Century Award recipient, Emmylou Harris’ contribution as a singer and songwriter spans 40 years. Admired through her career for her talent as an artist and song connoisseur, Harris shook up country radio in the 1970s, and established herself as the premiere songwriter of a generation selling more than 15 million records and garnering 13 Grammy Awards (this year she and Rodney Crowell won the Grammy for "Best Americana album"), three CMA Awards, and two Americana Awards. Harris is one of the most admired and inuential women in music. She has recorded with such diverse artists as Linda Ronstadt, Daniel Lanois, Bob Dylan, Mark Knoper, Neil Young, Gram Parsons, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Roy Orbison, Ryan Adams, Beck, Elvis Costello, Johnny Cash, Lucinda Williams, Lyle Lovett and most recently Rodney Crowell. Few artists have achieved such honesty or have revealed such maturity in their writing. As a self-employed performer and small business owner, I am unable to provide my traveling companions and collaborators with group health insurance. I simply can’t afford it. In fact, very few touring entities can. With 56,000 people making their living in the music business, 76% of us are self-employed, which leaves a large portion of our industry uninsured. When I ask most Nashville music industry insiders how much they know about Music Health Alliance, more often than not their answer is “not very much.” Most are surprised to learn that since the not-for-profit MHA was founded in 2013, over 5,600 people who earn their living in the music business have been connected by Music Health Alliance to life-changing healthcare resources, enabling access to doctors, medicine, health insurance and financial assistance in times of medical emergency. To date MHA has saved over $16 million dollars in medical bills and successfully reduced premiums. And these services are rendered by MHA entirely for free. If ever there was a friend to the middle class working musician and, for that matter, members of the day-to-day music business workforce, it is Music Health Alliance. The testimonials I’ve been privileged to hear in which MHA has walked uninsured music professionals through unimaginable health problems — brain tumors, ovarian cancer, end of life care, heart and liver transplants, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s Disease to helping working musicians and their families navigate the murky waters of health insurance — have made me a staunch supporter. While shooting a music video in downtown Nashville, the thought occurred to me that on weekends there must be hundreds of musicians working in the clubs lining either side of Broadway. -

We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. Stu Davis: Canada’s Cowboy Troubadour by Brock Silversides Stu Davis was an immense presence on Western Canada’s country music scene from the late 1930s to the late 1960s. His is a name no longer well-known, even though he was continually on the radio and television waves regionally and nationally for more than a quarter century. In addition, he released twenty-three singles, twenty albums, and published four folios of songs: a multi-layered creative output unmatched by most of his contemporaries. Born David Stewart, he was the youngest son of Alex Stewart and Magdelena Fawns. They had emigrated from Scotland to Saskatchewan in 1909, homesteading on Twp. 13, Range 15, west of the 2nd Meridian.1 This was in the middle of the great Regina Plain, near the town of Francis. GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. As performed in principal recordings (or demos) by or with Gram Parsons or, in the case of Gram Parsons compositions, performed by others. Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds. -
