The necessity to increase speed and density on the rail network and to harmonize the rail communication between countries has led to multiple projects that try to build on the ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) which has been initiated by the European Commission and leading railway representatives in 2005. ERTMS builds on ETCS and GSM-R. ETCS (European Train Control System) is the new control-command system and GSM-R is the new radio system for voice and data communication.

The computers used in traffic management systems – from the signaling equipment outside up to the safety ­management and communication systems inside the train – must be extremely safe. The safety standard that a system must comply to is described by classes, called SIL levels (Safety Integrity Level). The universal standard IEC61508 ­defines SIL 4 as the level with the highest reliability down to SIL 1 with the lowest reliability. Measures to increase the ­availability of a system include a variety of protection mechanisms built in hardware and often even redundancy of the complete computer system or parts of it. In addition to hardware measures the railway standards EN50126, EN50128 and EN50129 describe how development and planning of development has to be carried out, how requirements are formulated (what has to be done) and how requirements are translated into an architecture (how it shall be done) on system level.
