Fulbright, Susan Cooper, Angie Peloquin, Danny Scott, Becky Coley, John Wilson, Dan Ellington and Randy Smith. Ann Fulbright taking minutes for Susan Blackwell Minutes read and approved. Treasurer Report: Randy Smith will have a complete report for our Tams Concert Fundraiser next month. Randy S said he will correct a $99.00 charge for web site that was on wrong month.

NEW BUSINESS Terry asked for an amendment to January minutes to include a discussion regarding the CSA Contest and the CSC Fundraiser event. Amendment to read as follows: “In our January meeting there was a mention of a CSA Contest to be held in spring, April 2019.”

Terry opened the discussion regarding two different events, CSA Contest AND CSC Fundraiser. Susan W and Danny S would like to move the contest back to April for 2019. Per Danny S. CSA has no other open dates for a contest. Shrine club, where Fundraiser was held, April 2018 has April 6 and March 23, 2019 open. Suggestion was made by Terry that we have CSC Fundraiser on March 23 and CSA Contest on April 6.

Discussion per Randy, Becky C, John W. was the CSC Fundraiser should be priority.

Having two events that close together may affect attendance and support for both events. Danny S said he and Susan W will withdraw contest if both events were within 3 weeks apart as he believed there would be an issue for support of both events. He also said the CSC Fundraiser was a priority over the CSA Contest. Randy S. recommended that we have the CSC Fundraiser on April 6, 2019. John W mentioned CSA contest is important to CSC and shag because our instructors are learning shag steps and competing and turning around to teach our new members which continues life in our club. nd Danny S. made a motion that our CSC Fundraiser be on April 6, 2019…Becky C. 2 …No discussion…Motion approved. Angie P said The TAMS CONCERT 2018 was great, and everyone she spoke to had a great time. Board agreed. Terry said we will have a net amount of around $10,000. Randy S. will have the total for May. Carolina Shag Club Newsletter June 2018

Chris Aiken: Chris grew up in the best ‘50s and ‘60s. The dance and music was the thing that made a lifetime of friends. They had a place called Curry’s Lake in Gray Court, S.C. Curry’s had a juke box and during the summer, it was the place to hang out. Chris met Paula in 1975 and they both liked music and dancing. They had heard of the Sand Flea Beach Club and decided to check it out. They gathered a group of friends from Laurens and took lessons from Billy Waldrep and Sandy Coley. The Sand Flea days were the best years of his life.

Paula Aiken: Growing up in Watts Mill, S.C. in the ‘50s, they did a dance called fast dance which later became the shag. As teenagers they had several chaperoned teen clubs. A place called Curry’s Lake was THE place to meet and dance in a small pavilion with a jukebox. The music and dancing were priorities. When Paula met Chris, the first thing she asked him was “Do you shag?” He said yes, and she put on a song by The Intruders. They have been shagging together for 43 years, thanks to a place called the Sand Flea Beach Club where they decided they needed to learn more about the shag. Chris and Paula took lessons from Billy Waldrep and Sandy Coley. The rest is history. Glenda Argo: Glenda first learned to shag when she was a student at Parker High School with the help of her sister and Elaine Barton Wilson. She has been dancing ever since. She has been a member of the Carolina Shag Club since 1986 and has served on the board numerous times. She was a member and frequent patron of all of the Sand Flea Beach Clubs, as well as Dockers. Glenda has attended almost every SOS, even once going on a walker after breaking her hip in 2014! She has chaired shooter parties and pool parties for Meet Me in the Middle at Dockers and at the Greenville Hilton. She was a committee member for the CSC Poker Run fundraiser. She and her son Preston have promoted shag for various corporate events and instructed the basic step and simple line to school children at various schools in Greenville County. Terry Gordon: Terry grew up traveling. She is an Army brat. After her father retired, they moved back to Georgia. Terry and Mark met at the University of Georgia and married in 1981. Shortly after, they moved to Greenville and found their way to the Sand Flea on Rutherford Road. Their First instructors were Elaine Wilson and Billy Waldrep. Terry has served in many capacities on the board of directors for Carolina Shag Club through the years and is currently serving her second sting as President. Terry and Mark have one daughter, Katie, who is married to Andrew Evans and they have two boys, Grayson and Jack. Most of Terry’s time is spent volunteering and traveling with family and friends.

Melody Hubbard: Melody was a life-long resident of Easley, S.C. and a very gifted individual. Her piano playing was very inspirational as well as her singing. She raised two boys and also had five grandchildren. Melody had never entered a bar until she went to the Sand Flea on Rutherford Road in the latter part of 1986. This is where she met her future husband, Rick Hubbard. Melody found a love for dancing. She was compassionate about dancing and participated in all of the World Line Dance Championships held at the sand Flea. She started teaching line dance at the Sand Flea and continued until it closed its doors in 1993. We lost Melody in April of this year but were able to let her know she had been selected to be a member of the Greenville Area Shaggers Hall of Fame. This news made her very happy. Lib Smith (Honorary): Lib started dancing in 1936 (Sic.) and learned the Charleston and the Big Apple. Next came the Jitterbug and then, her love, the Shag, and just ‘never sat down after that.’ She really fell in love with the Shag when Big Band music was on the way out and fast-paced eight counts dancing was on the way in. Dancing was a big part, not only of her life, but that of her whole family. They hosted dances at their home and other places. Her ‘heart’ for dancing, though, was a little hole-in-the-wall with a jukebox near Converse College called the Big Dipper. Lib and ‘Doc’ Smith were married for 53 years until his death in 2004. He had no choice but to love the Shag, too. Together, for 35 years, she and Doc taught the Shag to the Spartanburg Debutantes. In the early ‘80s they joined the R&B Shag Club and were regulars at SOS. Lib has a collection of photos, T-Shirts and SOS cards dating from 1982.

Musings of a Curious Mind

In my interaction with various members of our Shag family, sometimes, my curiosity gets peaked. It usually happens when I’m involved in a conversation on some facet of “what makes up our shag culture,” making me wonder if sharing some of the history or genealogy of the culture might be interesting to some of our newer members.

I certainly would not want to insult anyone’s intelligence, oh wait, I’m not intelligent enough to do that, but, I am old and have seen a lot. I might be what could be loosely (very loosely) called an elder statesman of our club. Anyway, I suggested to the board, that, if I might, I’d like to contribute to the newsletter occasionally. The motion was made “to let the dummy do it,” seconded and passed without dissent.

So this is in way of my introduction to some “musings to come”. I hope you will enjoy. At the very least, you can print the newsletter out and read my musings during your morning constitutional. Please wish me luck. I’m probably going to need it.

Dance Contests and what they add to our Shag lifestyle.

Many of us enjoy attending Shag contests or watching videos of various dance championships. It’s fun to see what new “stuff” the more talented folks have come up with and marvel at their abilities. Some of us may want to compete while some of us prefer just to . However, the two are very intertwined.

In order to learn this dance, someone has to teach you. Have you ever wondered, when you are having trouble getting that new step, how the teacher can figure your problem out and help you on your way? Maybe I can illustrate with my story. I learned the “basic” at about 12 years old from an aunt of mine. When the resurgence of the dance happened in the early 80’s, I walked into the Sand Flea on a Wednesday night when Billy and Elaine were teaching. I enrolled in a class and continued on through Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced classes (as they were called then). I was social dancing my rear off and loved it. At some point (memory fails) somebody said “There’s a contest here next month, you ought to dance in it”. It took me a while to get accustomed to the idea, but I finally agreed and danced in it. Needless to say, I did not win. More needless to say, I wanted to know why. So I asked the teachers. And kept asking.

Shortly, several things dawned on me. First was that if I was going to compete favorably, I needed to learn all the nuances of the dance. Second was how did the teachers I was asking get to be able to give the answer. Turns out that the teachers had already gone through the same process. History does repeat itself. The moral (or point) of this story is that contest dancing produces most of the folks who end up doing serious teaching. They can answer your questions because they also had to learn all the nuances in order to compete favorably themselves. So, we need to be thankful for the contests and contest dancers. Our social dancing benefits greatly from it.

A by the way point (and a fruit of an old mind): Next time you see your teacher, just tell them “John said you didn’t look any better in your beginner’s class than I did”.

Editor’s note: these contributions come from DJ John Wilson. John has been a CSC member longer than almost anyone can remember. Thanks, John!
