    SOB SISTERS: THE IMAGE OF THE FEMALE JOURNALIST IN POPULAR CULTURE By Joe Saltzman Director, Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture (IJPC) Joe Saltzman 2003 The Image of the Female Journalist in Popular Culture revolves around a dichotomy never quite resolved. The female journalist faces an ongoing dilemma: How to incorporate the masculine traits of journalism essential for success – being aggressive, self-reliant, curious, tough, ambitious, cynical, cocky, unsympathetic – while still being the woman society would like her to be – compassionate, caring, loving, maternal, sympathetic. Female reporters and editors in fiction have fought to overcome this central contradiction throughout the 20th century and are still fighting the battle today. Not much early fiction featured newswomen. Before 1880, there were few newspaperwomen and only about five novels written about them.1 Some real-life newswomen were well known – Margaret Fuller, Nelly Bly (Elizabeth Cochrane), Annie Laurie (Winifred Sweet or Winifred Black), Jennie June (Jane Cunningham Croly) – but most female journalists were not permitted to write on important topics. Front-page assignments, politics, finance and sports were not usually given to women. Top newsroom positions were for men only. Novels and short stories of Victorian America offered the prejudices of the day: Newspaper work, like most work outside the home, was for men only. Women were supposed to marry, have children and stay home. To become a journalist, women had to have a good excuse – perhaps a dead husband and starving children. Those who did write articles from home kept it to themselves. Few admitted they wrote for a living. Women who tried to have both marriage and a career flirted with disaster.2 The professional woman of the period was usually educated, single, and middle or upper class.

The Raven Award recognizes outstanding achievement in the mystery field outside the realm of creative writing. “Sisters in Crime is thrilled with this award, honoring nearly thirty years of work in the trenches, promoting the advancement, recognition, and professional development of women crime writers,” said Sisters in Crime President Leslie Budewitz. “That it comes from one of our partners in crime and advocacy makes the honor doubly sweet.” Also honored by Mystery Writers of America at this year’s Edgar Awards were Ellery Queen Award Recipient Janet Rudolph, and a second Raven Award recipient Margaret Kinsman, and 2016 Grand Master Walter Mosley. Mystery Writers of America recognized Sisters in Crime as the organization approaches its 30th anniversary. At the 1986 Bouchercon World Mystery Convention in Baltimore, Sara Paretsky convened an initial meeting of woman writers who were concerned about increasing graphic violence against women in mysteries and a lack of equity in review, award nominations, advances, and other measures of a writer’s success. The following year during the Edgars Week, a group of woman writers met in Sandra Scoppettone’s SoHo loft for breakfast and formed Sisters in Crime.     june-july History is in the details By Brian Thornton Book Expo America History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it. - Winston Churchill Let me tell you, having read both Churchill’s memoirs and some of the “history” he wrote, the guy wasn’t kidding about history written by him being kind to him. And while Churchill’s fictionalization of history was equal parts intentional and unintentional, there is a growing group of authors who intentionally blend not only history and fiction, but history and crime. These writers of “historical mysteries” include such literary lights as Steven Saylor, Anne Perry, Jacqueline Winspear, Jason Goodwin, Steve Hockensmith and Louis Bayard (the first two are past Edgar Award winners, Winspear is a 2004 Edgar nominee and the last three are 2007 Edgar nominees). Whereas research has always played a large role in mystery writing, historical research can be a different animal altogether. I recently asked several historical mystery writers to name their favorite internet research tool, the one that most readily accomplished the twin goal of saving them time and giving them a maximum return on their investment.     Newsletter | April 2018 Books with a Sense of Humor I enjoy books in a gladiatorial sort of way. Let me clarify. If I lived ten lifetimes, I’d still never get through my to-read list. Working in a library doesn’t help. I can add twenty titles a week if I’m being conservative about it. And reading time can be sparse when it competes with parenting, eating and sleeping. So, how do I sort it all out? I start five books at a time and stick with the one that grabs my attention the most. Ruthless? Maybe. Effective? Well, I’ve found a lot of great reads this way, and some of them really started as underdogs. I may return to finish the runner-up, but often I’ve got five more contenders ready to take the arena by then, so I make no promises. Watching books fight to the death for my attention has brought something to my attention, though. I like books with a sense of humor. It’s a quality that several of the winners have shared. Sometimes it’s witty, sometimes ironic, sometimes it’s just silly, but a book is already ahead of the game if it can inspire quiet inward LOLs. This is not to say that I only read books that would be filed under “Humor.” I have a weak spot for Mysteries, Biographies, Horror, Speculative Fiction and How-To Manuals for Writing Newsletter Articles. As much as I love the likes of Tina Fey or Jim Gaffigan, I seem to keep comedians low on the list.
