r BANBEIS Publication No. 47 -- * Statistical Profile of Government Secondary Schools of Bangladesh 1983 f Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics (BANBEIS) Sonargaon Road, Palashi-Nilkhet, Dhaka-5 January, 1986 PREFACE For the first time an attempt has been made in this publication to bring out a statistical profile of secondary education offered by the Government managed secondary high schools of the country. This is the beginning of a plan to present annual performance of educational institutions run by the Government.. Meanwhile, returns for 1984 and 1985 school years have largely been made available in this Bureau and hopefully an up-to-date presentation of data about Government high schools would shortly be possible. Occasionally, demands for various types of statistics are received at BANBEIS for the Government sector by various Ministries, Departments and International Agencies. A brief description of the major findings from the survey have been furnished in the following write-up. Comments and suggestions on this publication from the users/readers will be much appreciated. In the year 1983 there were 178 Government High Schools in the country. The report presents data on a total of 173 institutions; returns from 5 high schools were not available after repeated reminders till finalization of this report. The distribution of the high schools by various Divisions and by type are as follows: Division For all. For boys. For girls. Chittagong 46 31 15 Dhaka 57 30 27 Rajshahi 36 19 17 Khulna 34 17 17 Total 173 97 76 It is found that after the emergence of Bangladesh, a total of 37 high schools were brought under Government management. The distribution of these schools are—14 in Chittagong Division, 16 in Dhaka, 14 in Rajshahi and only 2 in Khulna Division. As against, 37 Nationalised schools during 1971—83, there were 107 Nationalised high schools between the period 1947—70. When the British left Bangladesh in 1947, there were only 29 Government high schools. In the 173 schools there were a total of 4157 teachers, of which 1349 were females. Thus the ratio of female to total stood at 35 %. Again it was revealed from the study that • only 3232 teachers were graduates, of which 1014 females. Thus the ratio of the graduate teachers to total came out to be 78 % overall, and the ratio of female graduates compared favourably to total females which came out to be 75 %. Trained teachers were 3226 which was 78 % and that of the females 82%. This appears very striking. It may here be noted that total number of sanctioned posts of teachers as of 1983 were 4793. Thus the percentage of posts vacant came out to be about 13%. As regard? other employees, such as librarian, clerk, typist and MLSS, number of total sanctioned posts reportedly were 2984, of which 2451, that is 82% were filled-up. As for female there were 517 female supporting staff out of 2451 posts filled-up. Thus the ratio of females to total posts among employees stood at 21 %. Total Enrolment in these high schools (including primary sections attached), were reported to be 1,08,443 of which 47,750 (44%) were girls. Enrolment in the primary sections were 24,728 comprising 12,421 (50%) girls. Table below gives a summary of total teachers and students by sex and division. Teachers. Students. Division. Total. Male. (vi) In the year 1983 a total of 12041 students appeared in tha Sscondary School Certificate (S.S.C.) examination held under various Boards from these schools, of which 9691 successfully passed the same. This gives a pass percentage of 81 49. Details of output statistics by division and by stream as shown in the following table: Division: Chittagong. Dhaka. Rajshahi. Khulna. Total. Stream.
