Welcome to t he best location in the nation - Cleveland, of course. To all our old friends its super to see you again, and to you new faces, its great to see you guys as well.

For the men it is a historical occasion! Who would believe we would be pounding the pill for the long hard green. For the first time in the history of our favorite sport, dollars are replacing the firm handshake and the clasp on the back from the not so ardent admirers. For some, perhaps the courts will get smaller, the wires a little looser, and the lines altogether erased; but not to any of the fine sportsmen gathered here this week. I am sure, it will be more of the same - great paddle, good fellowship, super parties, and naturally lousy weather.

Masters? You know w hat masters are. Masters are the top of their profess ions, the best of whatever they are trying to do; and what we have gathered here this weekend, male and female, is exactly what we hope to do as the years slide by. We think we have the right formula for Pad dle Tennis success in continuing the innovations that hopefully we are known for in Cleveland.

We have two companies in particular that are making this possible and many, many others in the supporting role. Myles Reil ly, President of R. J. Reilly, Jr. Inc., paddle tennis court builders extraordinaire, called on the phone on a typically Cleveland dreary fall day and said that their firm would be interested in sponsoring the first, and hope· fully, the best sanctioned monied tournament ever palyed in the U.S. Myles said his company wanted to do it in Cleveland where innova· tions have become commonplace. Flattered we were, and accepted their kind offer we did. Not only is their support a valued cash dona· tion, but the center aluminum court at the Cleveland Racquet Club is also installed and loaned to the Masters by their company as we ll. We are also fortunate to have in town one of the great companies with an eye not only for the girls but for the sport-minded as welL Jess Bell of Bonne Bell Cosmetics was asked if he and his company would have an interest in joining hands to support the Masters, and Jess responded quite so. The final details were ironed out one morn ing when Jess was running his daily five-mile jog from home to office. Bonne Bell also is the only company, believe it or not, in greater Cleveland to have its own paddle tennis court less than one hundred steps from the President's office! To all of the Reillys and all of the Bells, we in Cleveland so thank you for sponsoring our First Masters. We are also most appreciative for all of the other sponsors from the Corporations as well as to the Individual Sustaining Sponsors that are mak i ng the tou rnament possible.

Why Prize Money? Cleveland was most anxious to trap the best athletes in the country to play the game we all love. At some point in time we are hopeful of spreading the game to the inner-city and other places where it might not normally be found. We think control led commercial ism is good for the game and we want a part in it, to help direct the game on a direct course rather than have it slide into the hands of people that sell their interest first and the game itself somewhere less than last place. It is our way of helping the APT A to sponsor junior tournaments, Executive Secretary, training films, year book and whatever.

We are glad you are here to participate in the First of what we hope will be many fantastic Masters. We have to apologize to everybody about the draw -- - but don't call us, we'll call you.

November 23,1974

Speak ing of the Mast ers ....

A few of Richard J. Reilly, Jr., Inc.'s staff got together the other night to work off another day's frustrations, by giving a new Reilly aluminum court a t rial run .

Dick Re illy, our founder and chairman, showed his usual savvy by choosing as his partner our Manager of Services and two time national champion, Dave Jen nings. This resulted in a sound drubbing for Rad Hastings, our Central Regi on Manager, and yours truly. Dick carefully avoided a family problem; he and I are close personal and business friends . . , but we are not related I

The four of us . .. veteran tournament observers (mostly) and winning combat ants (only Dave) , agreed this f irst Masters represents a milestone in the develop ment of Platform Tennis. The Cleveland organizers have once again demonstrated tbeir leadership by offering the first 64 team cash prize purse in the game's his tory. This tournament is therefore something special, one to be remembered.

That's why we have installed a Reilly aluminum court, to be used as the Center Court . . . on which the first Masters Championship will be determined.

That's why Dick Reilly, who is also a noted photographer, has his cameras ready to capture the action and color of the tournament.

That's why the leading players from allover the country are here to play and enjoy the fantastic Cleveland hospitality.

That's why a volunteer team of almost 100 workers is doing such a marvelous job with the Cleveland organizers.

That's why the Re illy "fam ily" is proud to playa role in this tournament.

There's a great deal of player know·how and engineering behind the aluminum court. Dick Reilly developed that court and opened a new era in the sport. Today, the aluminum court ha s surpassed the traditional wood court in overall popularity.

For his innovative work in court design and development, Dick Reilly received the American Platform Ten nis Assoc ia tion's 1974 Honor Award for distinquished achievement . . . for which all of us who work for him are justifiably proud.

Sincere ly, ~~ Myles Reilly President

Who is Bonne Bell and what is she doing on the West Side of Cl eveland

by Jess Bell

Bonne Bell may so und lik e a race horse or a y acht, but she's a girl (my sis ter) and sh e's a cosmet ic company (ours) .

In 1927 J. G. Bell (my Dad) packed up the family and we headed east in a covered w agon . It ac tually wa s a Jordan car. Most of the traffic w as going west but my Dad marched to a different drummer. We w ere bound for Cle veland, Oh io out of Wichita, Ka nsas. Dad had hea rd that Cleveland was 500 m iles from half th e populat ion in the U.S . It just had to be the best locat ion in the nation. Ever since then I've tried to go w est and f inally succeeded a few years ago when we opened offices and warehousing in Denver, Colorado.

We are a fam ily bu siness, having resisted all merger offers and deciding not to go public. We are located in Lakewood, Ohio where the west begi ns and eas t peters out. We make great cosmetics - specializing in skin care preparations for Young Women of all Ages. Our best known product is Ten-O·Six Lotion. It is an anti· septic cl ea nser. We se ll millions of bottles every year . .. it really is terrific.

We appeal to the active, attractive soman who isn't afraid to sweat . Our stuff is found in Department Stores and Drug Stores throughout the U . S. and half a dozen foreign countries.

Tell all your friends about Bonne Bell ·· we need all the help we can get.

I hope you enjoy the Masters and if you get a chance, come over to L akewood and say Hi ... w e're just six miles north of the Cl eveland ai rport. c:!;UBest,

P.S. We put in a Platform Tennis court at our office in September and my wife Julie and I are just learning the game . It is a shame we didn't know about it yea rs ago. What a great place to lock up your kids.

# 1 John Beck Bed ford Golf & Tenn is Club Herb Fitzgibbon Fire Island Boys Club The 1973 performance of this team was one of the finest ever in the recent history of the sport. Together they played five sanc t ioned tournaments, and won all five, including the Big ONE - the MEN'S DOUBLES CHAM· PIONSHIPS at Fox Meadow, N .Y . last March. Herbie is considered by many to have the finest serve in the game to match his forcing game from the "ad court." John is the only rank ing lefty to play the "deuce court", which he does w ith a fury. He is also well known for his superb chop shot, which when combined with h is attacking shots is nearly impossible to defend against. # 2 Chauncey Steele, III - Boston Keith Jennings - The Country Club Boston Cl evelanders will long remember this duo's drive towards the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSH IP in 1973. T he team arrived as the twelfth seeded team and their drive fell short only in the fifth set of the finals. Last year they were ag ain runner·up in NATIONALS to Beck & Fitzgibbon, and currently they are ranked third nationally. They have many long suits, but most people consider them the premier volley ing tea m in the nation. Keith ROAMS the Court from "backhand" side, whi le Chum seldom errs while set ti ng h is partner up for the winner. #3 John Mangan - Manursing Is land Cl ub Robert Kingsbury - Fox Meadow Cl ub This tea m could well be local Clevelanders favorite team, and I suspect the fee lin g might well be mutual as John and Bobbie have never lost a match in Cl eveland. They have won the two previous Cl eveland Invit's as well as the ' 73 Nationals hosted locally . John is best known and feared for his relen t less top·spin forehand wh ich is hit as though shot from a cannon. Bobby is the scram bl er - ever stead y and ready to blitz the net whene ver possible. They are anxious to rega in their National Title this year. #4 Chip Baird - Short Hills Club, Short Hill s, N.J. Steve Baird - Short Hills Club, Short Hills, N.J. The Ba ird "Boys" are currently ran ked fou rth Nationally and are on the move towards the top. They were an instant success locally when they bat tled Mangan & K in,gsbury on even terms during the '73 Na tionals. Their specia lty is pressure - pressu re - pressure, as they are alway s on the attack. Generally they return w ith power and often follow their serves to the net. #5 Hank Irvine - Short Hills Club, Short H ill s, N .J. Don Macrae - Short Hills Club, Short Hills, N .J. Han k and Don are ranked se venth Nationally after an excellent year last year . Hank has bee n playing the game a short two years, and has it all - power, tough serve , excellent and aggressive wire play from the "deuce" court. Don is on th e BOARD OF THE APTA, and is its Vice President of Balls and Equipment.

#6 Charles Baird - Short Hills Club, N .J. Roger Lankenau - Westchester Country Club, N.Y .

Clevelands most loyal duo (+) two of the greatest chicks are welcomed again to the area where they have played so many fine matches. Always wough as they have been for so long, Chuck and Roger are currently rank ed ninth nationally - up several places from '73. Chuck is the offensively minded deuce court player and is perfectly complimen ted by back hand chop shot ar tist Roger.

#7 Carrington Clark, Jr. - Ki rtland Country Club, Cl eve., Ohio Dwight Lowell - Manursing Island Club, N .Y . Two-t ime Nationals se mi-f inalist, former Cleveland Invitational Winner and Consola tion Winner teams for second y ear with currently ranked tenth Nationally, th is highly se lf rated duo was runner-up in Buffalo in the years first tournament. Dwight has been ranked as high as third with Bradley Dwune, while Carrington and David Dickensen well rated as high as sixth. Unques t ionably this team is and m os t likely will continued to be unde feated and rank first in the art of personal court decor - i.e. dress.

#8 Oliver Kimberly - New Caanan Field Club, Conn. David Jennings - New Caanan Field Club, Conn_ Tow time national champs reun ited thier strong games last year and are currently ranked eleventh in the Nationa l rankings. Kim plays the forcing backhand court, and was really responsible for chang ing the steady game to offensive barage. David, in charge of R.J. Reilley's maintenace division, is well known not only for his exce llent play, but his black bowler as well. #9 George Ball - Short Hills Club, Short Hills, N .J. Nell Benedict - Short Hills Club, Short Hills, N.J. #10 Scott Rogers Cl eveland Racquet Club, Cleve., Ohio John Brownlow Racquet Club East, Cleveland, Ohio #11 Chuck Saacke Racqu et Club, Louisville, Kentucky Charles Kane Racquet Club, Louisville , Kentuclty #12 Charles Parton New Jersey Steve Nycom New Jersey #13 Duke Felt Wee Burn, C.C. , N. Ruth Sadler - Cleveland Racquet Club Ann Kline - Cleveland Racquet Club Ruth and Ann are the first local tea m to win a ladies sanctioned tourna· ment, asthey easily took last years Cleveland Invitational. Lefty Ruth is known for her deceiving backhand drive, while Ann is rock steady as w ell as offensively minded of the deuce court wires. Ruth is the Lady Masters Co·Chairwoman with Betty Alexander.

2 El ea nor Polestak - Summit Tennis Club, N.J. Eleanor Kerby - Canoe Bwoh Country Club, N.J . El eanor Kerby returns to Cl eveland for second year after an excellent paddle year last year. Eleanor is curre ntly one·half of the third ranked ladies team nationally. Partner Elea nor Polestak plays Cleveland for the first year. The only reason sh e is not ranked is that sh e didn't have the required tournaments.

3 Nancy Mangan - Short Hills Club, New Jersey Matty Hill - Orange Lawn Tennis, New Jersey APTA Board member Nancy returns for third Cleveland visit. Nancy also had an excellent tournament year in ' 73, and is currently ranked seventh nationally. She teams for the first time with Matty Hill who is a part of the fifth ranked ladies duo.

4 Pat Lurie - West Side Tennis Club, N .Y .C. Marion Archard - West Side Tennis Club, N .Y .C. An excellent first tournament year for these two New York gals pro· duced a national ranking of eleventh . Both gals are airline stewardesses, who recently were runners·up in the Kalamazoo ladies tournament. 5 Janet McCutcheon - Kalamazoo Country Club, Mich. Yvonne Hachenburg - Kalamazoo Country Club, Mich. A victory in the first ladies tournament in Kalamazoo leaves this team un· defeated in 1974 play (McCutcheo n) is currently one·half of the mid· westerns top·ranking team .

6 Barbara Allen - Cleveland Racquet Club, Ohio Sally Neville - Country Club, Cleveland, Ohio Definitely one of the top three midwestern teams, Sally and Barbara were left out of the rankings due to a typographical error. Semi·finalists in Cleveland and Finalists in Pittsburgh highlighted their 1973 season .

7 Joan Turbidy - Kalamazoo Country Club, Mich. Durinda Brownlee - Bermingham A.C., Mich. Joan is one-half of the top-ranked midwestern teams, although this will be her last year in that spot. Not that Joan's abi lity has lessened, but she has recently moved to Philadelphia to continue her paddle play. Durinda is one of Berminghams fine players.

8 Judy Acken - Fox Chapel Club, Pittsburgh, Pa . Hanna Van Horn - Fox Chapel Club, Pittsburgh, Pa . Hanna and Judy have long been one of Pittsburgh's two best teams for a long time. They have played in each of our previous Invitationals and have always fared well. LADIES LOCAL PLAYERS
