Sessions Goals:  To provide an overview of, and implementation priorities for, the Competence by Design program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada  To encourage a dialogue about the Competence by Design program and its implications for medical education across the continuum of lifelong learning  To solicit feedback and consider how the vision and principles articulated in the Competence by Design program might be applied in the McGill context November 20, 2014 16h00 to 17h30

Dr. Kenneth A. Harris assumed the role of Director, Office of Education, at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in April 2009 and is currently the Executive Director of the Office of Specialty Education.

Dr. Harris is a Professor Emeritus at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario (UWO) having spent 25 years in active teaching practice of Vascular Surgery. He currently holds an appointment in the Department of Surgery at the University of Ottawa and UWO.

He graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston and completed General Surgery training at the UWO and Vascular Surgery training at the University of Toronto. He has served as the Richard Ivey Professor and Chair of Surgery at UWO from 1997- 2002.

Dr. Harris completed two terms as Associate Dean Postgraduate Medical Education, as well as serving as the Director of the Education Resource and Research Unit, at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the UWO. He also chaired the Council of Ontario Faculties of Medicine Postgraduate Medical Education Committee.

In his current roles and responsibilities at the Royal College, Dr. Harris oversees educational initiatives in the domain of specialty medicine across the lifelong learning continuum. This includes the setting and evolution of program standards as well as the assessment of specialty candidates.
