In the marine environment, all habitat types including estuaries, coral reefs, mud flats, and rocky intertidal shorelines have been impacted (e.g. Bertness et al. 2001). Recently, the topic of invasive species has caught the public’s attention. In particular, there is worldwide concern about the aquarium strain of the green alga Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh that was introduced to the Mediterranean Sea in 1984 from the Monaco Oceanographic Museum. -

This study was carried out, through a total of 271 scuba dives, from 2017 to the beginning of 2020 in four sites located along the Ionian coasts of Sicily: Catania, Aci Trezza, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla. Through a photographic data collection, 95 taxa, representing 17.27% of all Mediterranean marine Heterobranchia, were reported. The order with the highest number of found species was that of Nudibranchia. Among the study areas, Catania, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla had not a remarkable difference in the number of species, while Aci Trezza had the lowest number of species. Moreover, among the 95 taxa, four species considered rare and six non-indigenous species have been recorded. Since the presence of a high diversity of sea slugs in a relatively small area, the central-eastern coast of Sicily could be considered a zone of high biodiversity for the marine Heterobranchia fauna. FINAL REPORT November 15, 2007 Project Title Improving Understanding of Invasive Seaweeds in California’s Coastal Waters: Moving Beyond Caulerpa taxifolia. Principal Investigator Steven N. Murray Dean, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics California State University, Fullerton 92834-6850 The impetus for this project came from the increasing attention accorded introduced seaweed species in the eastern North Pacific following the California invasions of Caulerpa taxifolia and Undaria pinnatifida around the turn of the century. Much attention was given to Caulerpa taxifolia, primarily because of the notoriety associated with this seaweed resulting from its problematic invasion of the Mediterranean Sea. Its appearance in two southern California inland lagoons resulted in a massive and expensive eradication effort. In contrast, the appearance of Undaria pinnatifida, an invader known to disrupt coastal marine communities in other parts of the world, received much less attention in California and comparable organized and well-financed efforts to totally eradicate this seaweed were not undertaken. Moreover, other introduced or likely introduced seaweeds are known from the region but their introductions have been poorly documented and little is know about their impacts on coastal communities. Some of these seaweeds appear to be very recent introductions while others have occurred in eastern North Pacific waters for many years. This project consisted of two components with the goal of advancing our understanding of seaweed introductions in the eastern North Pacific beyond Caulerpa taxifolia. These included: 1) the organization and convening of a workshop focusing on the identification of research needed to improve understanding of the biology and ecology of invasive seaweeds, and 2) the funding of a small grant program to initiate small research studies on invasive seaweeds. -

Gonor ( 1961) gave in a table all available records of shelled sacoglossan opistho branchs which had ones been described by other researchers from various caulerpan species, when he showed the biology of Lobiger serradifalci (Calcara, 1840) collected from a mat of Caulerpa prolifera in the Harbor of Villefranche in September of 1960. Further, Burn ( 1966) described four species of shelled sacoglossan opisthobranchs, which were found in Octorber of 1964 living on the green alga Caulerpa racemosa, var. turbinata growing on the coral reef near the southeast of Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji. The present author also made an observation on the "caulerpan microfauna" at Cape Shionomisaki in the Province of Kii, Middle Japan in March of 1971 and found fourteen species of opisthobranch gastropods living on Caulerpa brachypus Harvey growing in the lower intertidal zone. -

This yielded 6095 specimens of opisthobranch molluscs, and approximately 81 species. Nine species were each encountered over 100 times, totaling 4999 specimens (82 % of the total number). Regression analyses on these species showed that over all the density of species per year significantly increased (P< = 0.01), but the number of specimens significantly decreased (P <= 0.007). -

Chan Members of the nudibranch genus Phestilla are common predators of scleractinian corals, but currently this genus has 10 described species only. Here we describe Phestilla goniophaga sp. nov., the first formally named predatory nudibranch species of the stony corals from the genus Goniopora. The new species can be distinguished from its congeneric species by the large number of long cerata (up to 16 rows and 23 cerata per row), and white rounded hump on the notum. The hump resembles the mouth of the coral poly, while the cerata resemble the coral tentacles. The egg masses of P. goniophaga sp. nov. are unique among Phestilla spp. egg masses in being bright orange in color, and forming a coiled ribbon. -
