HALF WAY THROUGH 2019 ALREADY!!??!!

Blimey is it June already, how did that happen? What a wonderful month of May we had, my stand out memory has to be the crowning of Violet May Reed, our 66th Canon Johnson Sunday School Rose Queen. Violet and her family hold a very special place in my heart (as they do to so many) and I am pleased to share with you some of the speeches and pictures of the day she was crowned. I am sure I will have lots to report over the 12months about what she has been up to. I know Violet loves to spend a lot of her time outside and I pray that June brings us good weather so we can all spend time outdoors, children playing, people sitting in their gardens, the birds singing and the flowers blooming, showing off their pretty colours and filling the air with their beautiful smells. I find, and I hope everybody else does, that getting some fresh air lifts my mood and makes may day happier. Page 16 has a Spring motivational quote. I hope you all have a great June, Below are a couple of reminders of important dates. Tracy (editor)

Once again the band that proudly carries the name of Christ Church Ashton did us proud. They were the band at the head of the St George's Day parade around Manchester which looking at Google maps is an approximate 2 and a half miles round trip in scorching heat. Well done all involved.

Canon Johnson Sunday School Rose Queen

Sunday 12th May saw the crowning of the 66th Canon Johnson Sunday School Rose Queen Violet May Reed. This is retiring Rose Queen Amy Mellor’s speech - “Reverend David, Mr. Wragg, family and friends. It doesn’t seem like 12 months ago that I was crowned Sunday School Rose Queen. The time has passed so quickly. It has been an amazing year for myself, my Retinue and our families. Without whom we would not have been able to visit so many wonderful parishes and enjoy their friendship and hospitality. In February of this year, we held our At Home. We had 11 visiting Queens in attendance. Luckily we all managed to fit everyone in and a great time was had by all.

10

As well as our Crowning and At Home, we held some other fundraising events. The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, the December Coffee Morning in Church. Of which the proceeds were donated to buying presents for homeless children and dogs. And our Rose Queen Rocks night. We had a fantastic night and the band brought the house down!! Over the year we have managed to raise £1,700. A special thank you to all those who donated and supported us. As for my beautiful dress, I will not be saving it for my wedding, much to contrary belief. I am donating it to a charity, that makes gowns for angel babies. I have some “thank you”’s to make. My lovely Retinue. We really have had lots of fun. Jojo, Jayden, Luda, Martin, Indiya, Margaux and Edison. Thank you so much. Our families. I truly don’t know how you did it all, but thank you for making the magic happen. Mum and Dad. You are legends. Auntie Caz. Thank you for producing all the beautiful invites, posters, order of services etc.... You truly are a star. Olga, Reikha, Paul, Paula and Pauline, thank you for all your help.

11

The unofficial members of the Retinue, who attended every event and helped out. - Lily. Thank you for helping back stage. We really appreciate it. Amelia for being so funny. And Max. Just for being cute. And finally, our Commander in Chief, Elizabeth. Thank you for all your knowledge, experience and patience. But most of all, thank you for your kindness and support. We couldn’t have done it without you. And now today, I retire and Violet is to be crowned our 66th Rose Queen and makes the same promises I did 12 months ago. So as my final duty, I would like to wish Violet and her Retinue, every happiness and success in the year ahead. I truly hope you enjoy it as much we have. Thank you. Also thank you to The Beautiful Curse for rocking the house, at our Rose Queen Rocks night. It was incredibly kind of them to volunteer their time for us”.

Violet was crowned by 6th Ashton Cub Scout Leader Danielle Hyde, here is her speech - “I would firstly like to say a huge thank you to Violet for letting me be part of such a special day. I am use to see Violet covered in mud.... suspended by a climbing harness high in the air....zip lining through trees ..or swimming out of a lake having just had her Canoe capsized by her mate.... But today I'm sure we can agree she looks stunning and every bit the Queen. Violet first stepped through the doors of our scout hut on Thursday 28th September 2017. She quickly became part of our scouting family and made her Cub promise -To do her best to do her duty to God and to the Queen and to keep the cub scout law- Over her time in Cubs Violet has been on many camps, always getting stuck in to activities, looking after any- one who was homesick or worried. In fact this kindness didn't stop at her fellow scouts...it also includes Newts... On one camp in Sheffield she discovered her and her tent mates had shared their tent with a Newt for the night. They fondly named the newt 'Barry' before returning him to his near by pond. I can only be thankful it was the girls tent the newt went in as had it been the boy the screams would have been heard back home in Ashton. She fulfilled her scout promise tenfold, ALWAYS try- ing her best, ALWAYS putting others before herself, ALWAYS leading by example when she became sixer, and her hard work paid off when I was able to proudly award her her Chief Scout Silver award, the highest award in Cubs.

14

Violet has made her Rose Queen promise here today In front of you all and I know she will fulfil that promise with 100% commitment and a big smile on her face. Once again I'd like to thank Violet for being a delight to have at Cubs and for letting me part of today. I hope you have a wonderful day, and a wonderful year as Rose Queen”.

Doris Day 1922-2019

A singer and actress most popular in the 1950s and early-1960s passed away on 13th May 2019.

Here is a timeline of an amazing and most memorable life.

1922 - Doris von Kappelhoff born 3rd April 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio. 1937 - a car accident shattered her dreams of dancing professionally and also her leg, being a daughter of a music teacher, Doris started taking singing lessons during her recovery. 1947 - after singing with several big bands and changing her name to after the song “Day After Day” she went solo. 1940 - Landed a spot as a vocalist with the band led by Bob Crosby (brother of Bing Crosby), but later that year teamed up with Les Brown and his group 1944 - Scored her first number one hits, “Sentimental Journey” and “My Dreams Are Getting Better All The Time” 1948 - Another hit with “Love Somebody”, a duet with Buddy Clark and, she also made her film debut in Romance on the High Seas 1950 - Played a singer involved with a troubled musician (Kirk Douglas) in Young Man with a Horn, also that year starred in a thriller Storm Warning.

24

1952 - “” 1953 - “Let’s Walk That-A-Way” 1953 - She sang “Secret Love” in the musical wester Calamity Jane, in which she played a rough-and-tumble cowgirl. She also had many movie-soundtrack hits. 1955 - Played a fictionalized version of jazz singer Ruth Etting in Love Me or Leave Me with James Cagney 1956 - Working with director Alfred Hitchcock, she appeared in the thriller The Man Who Knew Too Much with Jimmy Stewart. Day sang “Que Sera, Sera” for the film. 1957 - Made the film The Pajama Game 1958 - Her last non-film based hit “” 1959 - Made the film Pillow Talk, her first on screen pairing with Rock Hudson, bringing Day her only Academy Award nomination of her carer. She teamed up with Hudson for several more films including, 1962 - Send Me No Flowers 1962 - Filmed That Touch of Mink with Cary Grant 1963 - Starred with James Garner in The Thrill of It All By the end of the 1960’s Day’s sweet and charming personality seemed out of date, she starred in films like The Ballard of Jo- sie (1967) and With Six You Get Eggroll but these had less popularity than her classics. 1968 - The song “Que Sera, Sera” which had become one of her trademark tunes, was used it as the theme for her television series which ran from 1968 to 1973 1975 - Doris Day retired from acting. But she did not stop there!

25

Later Years Since her acting carer she has given much of her time to work- ing as an animal welfare advocate. She became one of the founding members of Actors and Others for Animals, along other stars who wanted to use their celebrity status to raise awareness about unfair treatment of animals. She also recued and fostered many animals at her house, which led to the non for profit recue organisation Doris Day Pet Foundation in 1978.

In the mid 1980’s Day made a short return to TV for a show about animals called Doris Day’s Best Friends.

In 1987 she formed the Doris Day Animal League, a non-profit making citizen’s lobbying organisation, to give legislative voice to the cause.

2007, the Doris Day Animal League merged with the Humane Society of the United State, while the Doris Day Pet Foundation grew from a grassroots rescue organisation into the Doris Day Animal Foundation, a grant giving non-profit organisation which gives other organisations sharing the same mission of “helping animals and the people who love them” money.

It was only into retirement Day received recognition for her work, collecting 3 Grammy Hall of Fame Awards in 1988, 1999 and 2012. She was awarded a Golden Globe Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989.

26

2004 she gained her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and also President George W. Bush gave Day the Presidential Med- al of Freedom, saying that “She captured the hearts of Ameri- cans while enriching our culture”. In 2011 she released “My Heart” in the UK, her first album in over 20 years, crowing Day as the oldest artist to record a top 10 album with new material on the UK charts. The actress passed away at her home in Carmel Valley, Califor- nia on 13th May 2019 at the age of 97. Her final wishes were to have no funeral or memorial service, and wanted to be buried in an unmarked grave. Friends and fans wishing to remember her are encouraged to visit her charity www.dorisdayanimalfoundation.org.

What a truly amazing lady, I couldn’t let her life pass without looking back with a smile. Tracy (Editor)

I would like to draw your attention to our new prayer tree situated in the “The Prayer Corner”. It is there for you to place your personal praise, thanksgiving and concerns before God. Would you please put the date on placement on the back of the card. After one month, I, or a member of the Prayer Team Ministry will place them on the alter for blessing and then they will be dealt with in a discreet and appropriate manner. Pauline

Prayer list The current prayer list has been growing steadily over several years, with some names being on it a long time. It has always been intended for us to pray at services for people who particularly need our prayers at that time, but the ministry team often don't know when to take somebody off it if they haven't added the name. If you want to put a name on the new list, please phone Pauline Ward on 0161 217 9578 If you want to keep a name on the list after that, you will need to ring Pauline before the Wednesday which proceeds the first Sunday of the next month. New names can be accepted at any time during the month and will stay on until the end of that month, after which they can be renewed in the same way.

Prayer Circle We have a dedicated group of people who pray daily in their homes for the sick and needy of our parish. This is done confidentially and only the Prayer Circle is aware of the people on the list. If you wish somebody (this person must have given permission) to have their name included, please inform Pauline Ward either in church or by telephone (0161 217 9578 ). Pauline will need a contact telephone number so she can contact you a month later in order to see whether you wish for the person to stay on the Prayer Circle.
