Rushing Professor Frank Grady,Department of English, University of Missouri, Saint Louis ii ABSTRACT Since 2000, the comic-book superhero blockbuster has become Hollywood’s most salient genre. “Heroes, Incorporated: A Political Economy of the Superhero Blockbuster” examines these seemingly reactionary fantasies of American power, analyzing their role in transmedia storytelling for a conglomerated and world-spanning entertainment industry. This dissertation argues that for all their apparent investment in the status quo and the hegemony of white men, superhero blockbusters actually reveal the disruptive and inhuman logic of capital, which drives both technological and cultural change. Although focused on the superhero film from 2000 to 2015, this project also considers the print and electronic media across which conglomerates extend their franchises. It thereby contributes to the materialist study of popular culture and transmedia adaptation, showing how 21st century Hollywood adapts old media for new platforms, technologies, and audiences. The first chapter traces the ideology of these films to their commercial roots, arguing that screen superheroes function as allegories of intellectual property. The hero’s “brand” identity signifies stability, even as the character’s corporate owners continually revise him (rarely her).

    Seeing Different: Portrayals of Disability in Young Adult Graphic Novels Marilyn Irwin, Associate Professor, Indiana University School of Library and Information Science, Indianapolis. Robin Moeller, Visiting Assistant Professor, Indiana University School of Library and Information Science, Indianapolis. As more students with disabilities are included in standard American education classrooms, the need to provide all students with literature that depicts people with disabilities has never been greater. With graphic novels growing in popularity with youth and becoming more apparent in school curriculum, the authors chose to analyze this format to answer the following research questions: Do graphic novels include individuals with disabilities? If disabilities are present, what disabilities were most often featured? What is the gender and ethnicity of the individuals with disabilities? Is there a positive portrayal of the person with a disability? After examining thirty graphic novels recommended for teens, the authors found that less than half of the sample depicted an individual with a disability. Of these, the majority of the portrayals were of negative stereotypical images of disability. The authors concluded that the authors, illustrators, and publishers of graphic novels recommended for teens have not provided a realistic representation of people with disabilities. Introduction The 27th Annual Report to Congress on the Implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2005 (U.S. Department of Education 2007, 28) reported that approximately six million U.S. students aged six to twenty-one were served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 2003—9.1 percent of all U.S. students in that age range.     Collection ACME La bande dessinée en dissidence Alternative, indépendance, auto-édition Comics in Dissent Alternative, Independence, Self-Publishing Christophe Dony, Tanguy Habrand et Gert Meesters (éditeurs) Presses Universitaires de Liège 2014 Reassessing the Mainstream vs. Alternative/Independent Dichotomy or, the Double Awareness of the Vertigo Imprint Christophe Dony Université de Liège Abstract This article examines how the traditional mainstream vs. alternative/independent dicho- tomy usually employed to characterize the cultural production of comics in the US may have become outdated, and perhaps even obsolete, when considering and analyzing the editorial policies and ideological agenda of Vertigo, DC’s adult-oriented imprint. More specifically, this essay sheds light on how Vertigo engages in a critical, ironic, and sometimes ambiguous discourse with both the history of the medium and staple practices and traditions from the mainstream and alternative wings of the American comics production. In so doing, I maintain that Vertigo is characterized by a hybrid identity and has developed a “double awareness” that allows it to appeal to both mainstream and alternative audiences. Vertigo’s hybridity, however, is not devoid of cultural, political, and even sociological implications that upset the categories of reception and production structuring the field of American comics. These im plications underlying both the hybrid character of the label and its concomitant politics of demarcation in regards to the mainstream/alternatve dialectic will first be explored through the label’s obsession with processes of rewriting and recuperation, and second, through a close-reading of some of Vertigo promotional books’ covers. Advisor: Sandra Hughes-Hassell This study examines the ways in which the bodies of teenage girl characters are drawn in graphic novels marketed to both girls and a broad general audience. A sample of 27 books were analyzed in an attempt to discern what kind of messages about bodies teenage girls are receiving when they read graphic novels. The results of this study found that most girl characters had relatively realistic body sizes and shapes, although there is an overall lack of images of larger female characters. Abstract As more students with disabilities are included in standard American education classrooms, the need to provide all students with literature that depicts people with disabilities has never been greater. With graphic novels growing in popularity with youth and becoming more apparent in school curriculum, the authors chose to analyze this format to answer the following research questions: Do graphic novels include individuals with disabilities? If disabilities are present, what disabilities were most often featured? What is the gender and ethnicity of the individuals with disabilities? Is there a positive portrayal of the person with a disability? After examining thirty graphic novels recommended for teens, the authors found that less than half of the sample depicted an individual with a disability. Of these, the majority of the portrayals were of negative stereotypical images of disability. The authors concluded that the authors, illustrators, and publishers of graphic novels recommended for teens have not provided a realistic representation of people with disabilities. Connors 2010 ABSTRACT Despite the interest that literacy researchers have taken in graphic novels—a kind of multimodal text that conjoins word and image to convey a narrative—few applied studies have asked how stronger readers at the high school level experience them. To fill a gap in the literature on graphic novels, and to contribute to a burgeoning body of scholarship on multimodal reading, this case study asked how six high school students—four males, and two females—who were identified by their English teachers as proficient readers responded to four graphic novels in the context of a voluntary after-school reading group. Sociocultural theories of literacy learning, as well as reader response theories and semiotic perspectives on multimodality, were employed to understand: a) how the students conceived of graphic novels as a form of reading material; b) what semiotic resources they drew on to construct meaning; c) how they talked about graphic novels in the context of an after-school reading group; and d) how, if at all, doing so influenced the manner in which they conceived of graphic novels. Data were collected using methods associated with qualitative research, specifically, whole-group and individual interviews, participant observation, and the collection of written artifacts.
