Now the story continues with Volumes 3 & 4. ● The mix is as before: big hits and neglected classics that tell the story of a musical genre. ● Double CDs and generously full booklets with complete song-by-song notes, rare photos, and first-person accounts. INFORMATION Volume 3 - 1970: This was the year that The Band was on the cover of 'Time' magazine, and Country Rock was recognized as a distinct category. Artists include the Allman Brothers, the Grateful Dead, Delaney & Bonnie, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Jeffer- son Airplane, Poco, Linda Ronstadt, Janis Joplin, and the now legendary Townes Van Zandt. As a bonus track, we have included a previously unissued recording by Townes Van Zandt from 1970. Volume 4 – 1971: And this was the year that the Eagles came together. Originally country rock artists backing Linda Ronstadt, they later changed American popular music. This volume includes Commander Cody, Link Wray, the Flying Burrito Brothers, the Band, New Riders of the Purple Sage, John Prine, J.J. Cale, Ry Cooder, Little Feat, and the first British bands to play country rock, Head Hands & Feet and Cochise. This is what fans across the world have come to expect from BEAR FAMILY: genre-defining compilations, generously full CDs, in- depth notes, rare photos, and complete discographies. In short, a 360 degree musical experience. So spray some patchouli oil, light up an exotic cigarette (where it's legal to do so, of course) and venture back to the late hippie era. From Los Angeles' ver- tiginous canyons to London's Marble Arch, the story is here! So, I am putting this issue together as much as I can from my armchair on my iPad, and I am feeling more than slightly sorry for myself. However this weekend is one of my favourites of the year. It is Beltane. Beltane is the anglicised name for the Gaelic May Day festival. Most commonly it is held on 1 May, or about halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. Historically, it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. In Irish the name for the festival day is Lá Bealtaine, in Scottish Gaelic Là Bealltainn and in Manx Gaelic Laa Boaltinn/Boaldyn. It is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals - along with Samhain, Imbolc and Lughnasadh - and is similar to the Welsh Calan Mai. Dear Friends, My first encounter with the concept was suitably groovy. It was from the bopping elf himself. I was So there I was, hunched up in my armchair, with a watching Top of the Pops, and Marc Bolan was lump in the middle of my back that made me look singing: and feel like Richard III, tripping off my bonce, and feeling like someone had kicked me in the stomach. “Wear a tall hat like a druid in the old days Wear a tall hat and a tatooed gown OK I am exaggerating slightly, but this week I have Ride a white swan like the people of the Beltane had a bloody great abscess in the middle of my Wear your hair long, babe you can't go wrong” back, and I am on big doses of a particularly virulent antibiotic that makes me feel so queazy that I had just read about druids in Rosemary Sutcliffe’s I can’t eat anything less bland than porridge.

And so, once again I have been caught out, and my policy of sitting down in the middle of the week to write my copy for the following weekend’s magazine has turned round and bitten me squarely on the bum. Prince was probably the most astounding musician and songwriter of his/my generation. I truly believe that his legacy will eventually be seen to be the equal of that of Frank Zappa. Certainly he was as prolific and as wilfully experimental. Fusing rock, pop, funk, soul and God alone knows what else, he produced some truly inspirational music which took me through some very bad times in my life and out the other side. I sit writing this only a couple of hours after the news was made public, and although I know that I shall process it, like I processed the reality of the deaths of other people whom I admired this year. But together with David Bowie, this one has hit me hardest. AS SOON AS WE HEARD,WE SHARED Not that we knew much.Flu?Plane landing? Died @Paisley Park Studio?Media blares without content. Grieving starts even before confirming Again, someone of Bowie's stature taken from us We who loved to the point of obsession We who could never cope with his absence must now adjust.Replay his music.Reminisce. His movie will be replayed. His songs ,too. Gossip columns will fill with idle conjecture Too young to leave (@57).So much still waiting Imagine vaults of post -death releases Unlike Bowie,he did not plan for this Like Bowie,he will be remembered Vividly. In purple.Tiny and defiant A symbol.Glyph of our Vanishing Age Quickly, try to forget (to cry.
