Neoliodes 2010, 2012, 2016; Arillo et al. in press), one species is andreneli sp. nov. constitutes the first mite to be described known from the Campanian Canadian amber (Sidorchuk from the Lebanese amber, and the earliest oribatid mite in & Behan-Pelletier, 2017) and two species are known amber. -

Until now, the data on oribatid species have not been published. This paper presents a list of oribatid species collected during 21 years of ongoing research in three pine stands of different age. The faunistic records refer to 84 species (including 17 species new to the fauna of Latvia), 1 subspecies, 1 form, 5 morphospecies and 18 unidentified taxa. The most dominant and most frequent oribatid species are Oppiella (Oppiella) nova, Tectocepheus velatus velatus and Suctobelbella falcata. The 242 new species are distributed unevenly among 50 families, with 62% of the total from the top 10 families. Geographically, these species are distributed unevenly among 39 countries. Most new species (72%) are from the top 10 countries, whereas 61% of the countries have only 1–3 new species each. Four of the top 10 countries are from Asia (Vietnam, China, India and The Philippines). New data from known or recently investigated localities are presented and comparisons made with faunas from equivalent latitudes in Asia and Greenland. Many of the Canadian sites belong to the Beaufort Formation, a prime source of late Tertiary plant and insect fossils. But new sites are continually being discovered and studied and among the most informative of these are several from the high terrace gravel on Ellesmere Island. One Ellesmere Island locality, known informally as the “Beaver Peat” contains spectacularly well preserved plant and arthropod fossils, and is the only Pliocene site in Arctic North America to yield a variety of vertebrate fossils. Like some of the other “keystone” localities discussed here, it promises to be important for dating and correlation as well as for documenting high Arctic climatic and environmental conditions during the Pliocene. -

Key words: Scheloribates distinctus, Oppia nitens, Protoribates pannonicus, Punctoribates ghilarovi, new record, oribatid mites INTRODUCTION There is over 40 000 named species of mites (it is estimated that there is even 1 million unnamed species) and about 11 000 of described oribatid mites (Walter and Proctor 2004), with ca. 500 species occurring in Poland. It is almost half of European oribatid species (Olszanowski et al. 1996). Recognition of oribatid mites’ distribution is still unsatisfied as well (Niedbała 2004). Windrows of compost are hot-spots of soil biodiversity in local scale and can be very promising in faunistic research (Rozkošný 1982, Ødegaard and Tømmerås 2000). High richness of species and high abundance of individuals, are both much larger in compost heaps than in surrounding soil (Walter and Proctor 2004). Thereby probability of discovery of new or rare species is relatively high there. METHODS Mites were extracted from sample of over 20 years old garden compost, consisted of kitchen and garden vegetable litter, in January 2004, in Łomianki near Warsaw. -

A new species, G. (G.) makilingensis sp. n., is described; it is most similar morphologically to G. (G.) tokyoensis Aoki, 1966, but differs from the latter by the morphology of porose areas Aa and Ap, rostral setae, and length of interlamellar setae. Three species, G. (G.) crenata Deb & Raychaudhuri, 1975, G. (G.) cf. exigua Sellnick, 1925 and G. (G.) khoii Mahunka, 1989, are recorded in the Philippines for the first time. The species G. (G.) crenata is redescribed. An identification key to the Philippine species of Galumna (Galumna) is given.
