It is with pleasure that I am addressing the King Chamber once again in my second year as president. This term has been very different for the Chamber and our community. After our AGM in March, the election of new board members, and looking forward to getting our new team working together, we had a sudden stop to everything we were planning. With so many of our businesses going into shut down mode, we were looking for answers as to how this was going to affect us all. The Chamber began by trying to learn and understand the new rules and requirements for all the local businesses and looking to see what could be done. We quickly had some ideas, we began by sending out a letter to our local government officials with suggestions to help small business to survive this abrupt shut down. We continued to keep our members informed of municipal, provincial and federal guidelines along with informational websites. This became our focus for the last 10 months. To help our local businesses manage and navigate the constant changes, that often occurred daily. To help notify local business of new ways to access and reach out for help with their business. This is not something any of us could have prepared for but we listened, we learned and we continued to provide as much help as possible. We were not able to host or participate in the events that we normally do to help the promotion and recognition of our members, but these are not normal times. We started having our board meetings virtually, we had special guests and special events, all virtually. Our way of thinking how things could be accomplished changed. With help from the King Township economic development office we were able to do a different kind of directory this year. We have done a more comprehensive directory with members from the chamber and their involvement in King. We are continuing to look for ways to help local businesses to succeed and come out of this pandemic stronger, wiser, and more resilient than ever. With the help of “Shop King” we can make this happen. We must all look after each other and work together. Please take the time whenever possible to support our local businesses so they will be there when we need them. I would like to say once again, we have a wonderful place to live, to shop, to work and to play. Please use this directory to find that special place here in King Township. President Angelo Santorelli King Chamber of Commerce

Message from Steve Pellegrini Mayor, Township of King

On behalf of Council and Staff, it is my pleasure to support the Chamber’s 2021 Business and Community Directory, a publication created in partnership with the King Chamber of Commerce and Township of King. This Directory provides information on over 150 businesses that are proud Chamber members supporting a common, strong voice and are the face of our small but mighty business community.

Our world has changed significantly since the last edition was published. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the largest negative impact on all aspects of the economy since the Great Depression. Apart from changing the way we go about our daily lives, the pandemic has also drastically changed the way businesses operate. I’m extremely proud at how King Township and local businesses have responded and how our residents have found creative ways to support our local economy in these challenging times.

Our Economic Development Office has been working closely with the King Chamber of Commerce to provide resources to help local businesses adapt to the new normal. Now, more than ever, we must all support our local businesses in any way possible. Please be sure to ShopKING.

Together we can work to keep King Township’s mighty economy as healthy as possible during these unprecedented times. Seminars Savings & Discounts Business Educational Take Advantage of Seminars Savings & Discounts Almost immediately following the election of the new Board and Executives at the AGM the Province went on full lockdown and it was all hands on deck at the Chamber. We immediately recognized the economic pain and potential fallout from a lockdown on small businesses in King. This prompted the Chamber to call for an “Emergency Standstill Agreement” and to lobby all levels of government for temporary business relief programs.

Such initiatives involved calling for programs very similar to the CEWS and CEBA before they werekingchamber.cawww.kingchamber.ca introduced and implemented 905-717-7199905-717-7199 by the federal government. The Chamber has also been lobbying our local government to considerkingchamber.cawww.kingchamber.ca such measures as 905-717-7199905-717-7199 commercial/industrial tax relief or deferment and expansion of business support programs, including the Community Improvement Plan. In the midst of all this economic chaos we created our own local COVID-19 resource and re-opening toolkits on the website to provide updated information on government programs, relevant legal issues and available local business support resources. We also implemented a very successful virtual networking program on Thursday mornings to link local business leaders and to liase with officials from all levels of government over the business challenges associated with pandemic restrictions and the gradual re-opening of the economy. We’d also like to thank our members Hospall Private Homecare and TaLii Towels whose generous sponsorship allowed us the opportunity to purchase high quality logo’d face masks to be delivered to all renewing members. We sincerely appreciate all our members and wanted to show our thanks for your continued support of the King Chamber. Last but not least the Chamber has remained actively committed to fully supporting “buy local” initiatives like the Canada United and Shop King campaigns. Looking forward, although they will both have a different look this year, we will be releasing the 2021 Business Directory shortly and we will be pleased to once again host the King Chamber Excellence Business Awards. Despite our best efforts we do, however, recognize that the remainder of 2020 and 2021 will be critical to the survival of many local businesses. At the King Chamber we will continue to work tirelessly to bring your business issues forward and to advocate for a safe re-opening of the economy and additional business recovery support from all levels of government. Four years ago, Theresa Sherwood began visualizing a new future for her family farm – a beautiful 70-acre picturesque, rural property here in King Township. Sherwood Farm was originally a thoroughbred race farm, with a stately Georgian home made possible by a successful family business. The retreat concept evolved from having hosted family business group retreats at the farm during the 90s. Prior to starting the retreat venue, Theresa researched other venues and met various wellness practitioners through both networking groups and participating in classes. Theresa’s husband and a wonderful network of practitioners and contractors really helped bring the ‘vision’ to fruition. Since 2016, Sherwood Farm has evolved into a serene Private Event Venue and Retreat where ‘Wellness’ is the keystone for reflection, renewal and revitalization. Optimal clientele are specialists, facilitators and practitioners who coordinate small group retreats such as yoga, art, health and wellness and so forth. The venue also hosts an annual “Handcrafted Gift Sale” in November to support local artisans.

Impact of COVID-19 Like many entrepreneurs, COVID-19 brought its own challenges for Theresa and has been a ‘game changer’. All spring events were cancelled during ‘lock-down’. Theresa took the time to address a “back burner” project and opened up old riding trails to create walking paths through the forest for retreats. COVID -19 definitely caused some setbacks in the beginning, but when the gathering limit was opened up to 10, Theresa worked with some of her practitioners to create smaller socially distanced retreats. This was a successful strategy when people had been isolated for so long. When lock-down was lifted, Theresa continued to successfully plan, manage and modify small group retreats at Sherwood Farm by working closely with her clients. Public safety protocols are observed along with the social distancing rules. Some groups require more reminding that others, but the supervision is there to monitor behaviour. Lower limits on overall numbers are enforced and full sanitizing practices are in place. A number of events are purposely planned outdoors where people only enter the house to use the washrooms.

Plans For The Future Over the summer Theresa focused on her core clientele and their contacts. Going forward she plans to continue working with a small number of practitioners who plan enriching experiences for clients wanting a safe natural environment to be with others to recharge and regroup. She has validated that her existing retreat/workshops continue to appeal mainly to women. Another future concept for Theresa will be in exploring how this safe, trusted and private setting can inspire more men to participate in group workshops at Sherwood Farm.

Key Learnings for other Entrepreneurs Theresa offers the following tips for any ‘budding’ or ‘established’ entrepreneur: ▪ Point the ship in a direction that feels right and do something… ▪ It is not necessary to have a complete plan. ▪ Think about what you want and believe it will come. ▪ If you make good connections, more will follow. ▪ Do what inspires you and you will be motivated, satisfied and rewarded. With a 25+ year successful career in the corporate insurance industry, Carla Fabien decided one year ago to take a leap of faith as an Independent Broker and launch her own Wealth Management business. After a great deal of self-reflection and a lengthy 360 review of her career, accomplishments, learnings and rewards, she decided to make a radical change. It was time to go back to her love of helping others, making a difference and changing lives.

Initiating the ‘Dream’ Knowing that she had her insurance licenses, loved helping others and had the courage and capabilities to start her own business, Carla began to craft her specific mission: • Help others bring their financial dreams and goals to life. • Help others prepare for the unexpected and discover how they could build and manage their wealth. • Build a flourishing business that was simple, enjoyable, successful and abundant.

Early Learning Opportunities As the saying goes “Fortune, favours the bold” and just like any other new start-up and independent business owner, Carla was not exempt from having sole accountability for the necessary financial commitments. Additionally, she understood that her initial challenges in starting a business would be a] her competition b] revenue generation and c] customer engagement.

By staying connected with other brokers in the industry and researching existing market opportunities Carla learned as much as she could about new products and other companies’ way of doing business. This allowed her to position her online presence more effectively. Which in turn reinforced her decision to focus on targeting clients with an earning capacity and who may or may not necessarily be employed.

Managing the ‘New Reality’ Despite the anticipated challenges of COVID-19, Carla remains optimistic. By staying abreast of changes and offerings in the industry and switching to online services that proved to be a seamless operation, she retains her positive, business-as-usual outlook.

Carla knows from her vast experience that people appreciate an understanding ear and to be valued. She sincerely believes that the success of her business is in understanding the needs of clients off and online as it relates to their budgets and future family aspirations.

Proudest Personal Achievements • Building a business from the ground up. • Setting and achieving realistic goals. • Continuing to build a meaningful online brand awareness.

Words of Encouragement Carla offers the following as ‘food for thought’ for any ‘budding’ or ‘established’ entrepreneur: • Ask yourself ‘Why I am really doing this?’ If it’s only to make money - reconsider. • Stay focused on the main goal not the distractions. • Yes, somedays it may seem like a seesaw, but it’s worth it. • Believe in yourself. Carla Fabien

king.ca 9 kingchamber.ca THE UNIQUE STORY BEHIND ANDRE FLYS - PIONEER BRAND HONEY AND MAPLE NOBLETON, ON

It all started around 1930 at the forks of the Don River in Toronto when Charles Sauriol started with his first colony of bees. A passionate naturalist and recipient of the order of Canada for his lifetime land conservation work and author of “Honey is my Hobby.” Sauriol was far ahead of his time with his steadfast passion for the environment and sustainable mindset. Fortunately for all of us, both these deep-seated values were passed on and embraced by his Grandson Andre Flys who now manages Pioneer Brand Honey and Maple and hundreds of colonies of bees with the help of his family.

Keeping the Dream Following in his Grandfather and Father’s footsteps, lifetime King township resident, Andre Flys became a third-generation hobbyist beekeeper and the first in his family to keep bees on a commercial and successful scale.

Andre started his first colony in his early 20’s as a hobby and now with the help of his family runs between 400 and 500 colonies of bees which equates to tens of millions of honeybees. Their farm gate store, Pioneer Brand Honey in Nobleton carries from 30+ varieties of honey, maple syrup, hive products such as bug repellent, skin creams and more, as well as some select imported products such as New Zealand Manuka honey.

With the help and invaluable support of family, the community of beekeepers in local associations and the Ontario Beekeepers Association, Andre’s passion and vision to sustain his Grandfather’s and Father’s ‘dream’ has grown into a thriving business.

Managing Beyond COVID-19 Determined to stay open for business during these unsettling times, Andre has adopted some no contact policies to help flatten the curve and offers his customers three new options for purchasing their products: • Your order can be ready ahead of time if you phone or text @ 416 807 2253 Orders can also be placed on their website with “Local Pickup” and shipping options. Payments can be made via e-transfer or PayPal. • Free home delivery is offered to King Township residents. • Free delivery for pick up at one of the farmers markets they attend is also an option. Check out their website for a full range of their products and to see which farmers markets may be close to you.

Proudest Personal Achievements • The opportunity, vision and courage for carrying on Grandfather Charles Sauriol’s and Father John Flys passion for bees, the environment and land conservation. • To have turned his grandfather’s hobby into a multigenerational business. • Pioneer Brand Honey’s Mission which is: “To provide natural products that encourage environmentally sustainable food sources.”

Key Learnings for other Entrepreneurs Andre has the following tips for both ‘budding’ and ‘established’ entrepreneurs: • Stay active in your business. • Share ideas with others who have the same interests. • When starting out, take opportunities to network no matter how small they may seem. • Don’t be afraid to ask for help and advice, mentors are important. Andre Flys

Who would have thought that the chore of mowing the lawn at home would turn into a lucrative self-financing business? From the time of Chris’s early teens, his dad was his ceaseless inspiration to go into the entrepreneurial world. Like many teenagers Chris needed to self- finance his passion for baseball and wanted to find a way he could do so by serving the needs of people in his community. The drive for self-financing his passion evolved from mowing the lawn for dad into choosing to create abusiness where a young student in the neighbourhood would take care of people’s lawns when required. Target customers were anyone who was unable to care for their lawns because they were too busy with family, career, vacation or maybe health concerns. Additionally, being an avid baseball player, he had plenty of opportunities to scrutinize the most beautifully cut turf in the world - professional baseball stadiums. Bringing the ‘Dream’ into reality The best resource for Chris Komljanic to kick-start his business was the Provincial Government’s Summer Company Grant. A program designed to provide valuable, business training skills to budding entrepreneurs. Weekly classes were held over the summer and through their mentorship, Chris learned practical entrepreneurial skills to make his dream a reality. In the Summer of 2019 Chris launched his own lawn care business – Chris Lawn Action. Turning Challenges into Learning Opportunities Like so many entrepreneurs Chris found his greatest learnings emerged through his challenges. Managing how to price his lawn care services, understanding and developing formal quotations while at the same time taking into account costs and expenses for equipment, PPE plus his personal time and effort was challenging. Chris realized early in the game how important it was to do the paperwork right the first time as it was too easy to lose prospective customers by pricing yourself too high. In order to generate new customers, Chris gained valuable experiences and challenges in his first year by learning the art of networking and selecting meaningful and effective advertising channels. Understanding what his local community was looking for and interested in was essential. As a result of his research, he made a deliberate choice to distinguish his services by being personable with customers, prospective customers and the community at large. Chris appreciates that people need to trust and like the person who is entering their personal space. His strong track record of 90% recurring customers year after year is because in his words ‘when people like you, they refer you to others with greater confidence and ease.’ So, it’s no surprise to learn that most of his business is from referrals. Impact of COVID-19 Covid-19 did not deter Chris from continuing to build his lawn care business in 2020. Chris continues to prove that despite this public health crisis he can reduce customers safety concerns by respecting people’s personal space when talking with them, wearing masks on job sites and taking care to clean his machines and equipment in-between customers. Not only has this approach retained his customer base it has also increased his referral rate. Extra attention has been made with his team wearing gloves at every site and ensuring that each and every job is well spaced out. By making sure that his customers are re-assured that their own safety is of the greatest importance to him and his team, Chris has earned an outstanding reputation. While attending university, Chris plans to continue with the business as it is. He sees that business is a progression of movement into the direction you want to be in. Dwelling on what doesn’t work is not his style. Chris prefers to keep moving forward and intends to stay focused on his core business which he knows is about cutting lawns and caring for the people that own the homes of the lawns that he cares for. Proudest Personal Achievements Chris Komljanic • Knowing he is in control of his life, in making his own decisions and setting his own work hours. • Increased confidence when he is speaking with others. • Confidently picking up the phone when he needs to talk with new people. • His personal reward for all his hard work is in achieving the funds necessary to self-finance his baseball training dreams. • Heightening his self-assurance and continuing to learn and improve his physical teamwork training has made him a better entrepreneur. Key Learnings for other Entrepreneurs Chris offers the following tips for any ‘budding’ and even established entrepreneurs: • Never give up, no matter how challenging things may be. • Don’t be intimidated. • Believe you can do it; you just have to START. Start today. Stop over-thinking, surround yourself with people who will encourage you with little steps and before you know it you will find yourself doing it. • Care for people. Care for people who help you along the way and return their backing and attention. Last words of wisdom from Chris Komljanic, an exemplary entrepreneur for the future: “Care about how you treat people and how you want to be treated. If you do that well, business will increase your confidence and you will continue to grow as a person and as a business.” king.ca 11 kingchamber.ca Sponsored by: The King Chamber is strong because of our members.
