ARTICLES It’s Not About the Money: THE ROLE OF PREFERENCES, COGNITIVE BIASES, AND HEURISTICS AMONG PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES Michael A. McCann† I. INTRODUCTION Professional athletes are often regarded as selfish, greedy, and out-of-touch with regular people. They hire agents who are vilified for negotiating employment contracts that occasionally yield compensation in excess of national gross domestic products.1 Professional athletes are thus commonly assumed to most value economic remuneration, rather than the “love of the game” or some other intangible, romanticized inclination. Lending credibility to this intuition is the rational actor model; a law and economic precept which presupposes that when individuals are presented with a set of choices, they rationally weigh costs and benefits, and select the course of † Assistant Professor of Law, Mississippi College School of Law; LL.M., Harvard Law School; J.D., University of Virginia School of Law; B.A., Georgetown University. • Baseball Timeline: Summarizing Baseball Plays Into a Static Visualization
Eurographics Conference on Visualization (EuroVis) 2018 Volume 37 (2018), Number 3 J. Heer, H. Leitte, and T. Ropinski (Guest Editors) Baseball Timeline: Summarizing Baseball Plays Into a Static Visualization Jorge P. Ono, Carlos Dietrich and Claudio T. (4) Runner reaches home. (5) Rundown, batter stranded between two bases. (6) Batter changes direction. (7) Batter is tagged out. Abstract In sports, Play Diagrams are the standard way to represent and convey information. They are widely used by coaches, managers, journalists and fans in general. There are situations where diagrams may be hard to understand, for example, when several actions are packed in a certain region of the field or there are just too many actions to be transformed in a clear depiction of the play. The representation of how actions develop through time, in particular, may be hardly achieved on such diagrams. The time, and the relationship among the actions of the players through time, is critical on the depiction of complex plays. In this context, we present a study on how player actions may be clearly depicted on 2D diagrams. The study is focused on Baseball plays, a sport where diagrams are heavily used to summarize the actions of the players. We propose a new and simple approach to represent spatiotemporal information in the form of a timeline. We designed our visualization with a requirement driven approach, conducting interviews and fulfilling the needs of baseball experts and expert-fans.

He later rode “prop planes” and “dive- bombed” into obscure hubs as a roving instructor for the Padres in the mid-1990s. His years as a minor league manager took him to Cedar Rapids, Edmonton, Salt Lake City, Fullerton, Maui and plenty of stops in between. San Diego, though, has always been home to the 61-year-old Templeton. He was enshrined in the team’s Hall of Fame in 2015 and will be inducted into the Breitbard Hall of Fame on Thursday, permanently stitching his 10-year stay with the Padres into a rich San Diego sports fabric. “It meant my life,” Templeton, now a San Marcos resident, said of his playing days with the Padres.
