Idolatry in the Ancient Near East1 Ancient Near Eastern Pantheons Ammonite Pantheon The chief god was Moloch/Molech/Milcom. Assyrian Pantheon The chief god was Asshur. Babylonian Pantheon At Lagash - Anu, the god of heaven and his wife Antu. At Eridu - Enlil, god of earth who was later succeeded by Marduk, and his wife Damkina. Marduk was their son. Other gods included: Sin, the moon god; Ningal, wife of Sin; Ishtar, the fertility goddess and her husband Tammuz; Allatu, goddess of the underworld ocean; Nabu, the patron of science/learning and Nusku, god of fire. Canaanite Pantheon The Canaanites borrowed heavily from the Assyrians. According to Ugaritic literature, the Canaanite pantheon was headed by El, the creator god, whose wife was Asherah. Their offspring were Baal, Anath (The OT indicates that Ashtoreth, a.k.a. Ishtar, was Baal’s wife), Mot & Ashtoreth. Dagon, Resheph, Shulman and Koshar were other gods of this pantheon. The cultic practices included animal sacrifices at high places; sacred groves, trees or carved wooden images of Asherah. Divination, snake worship and ritual prostitution were practiced. Sexual rites were supposed to ensure fertility of people, animals and lands. Edomite Pantheon The primary Edomite deity was Qos (a.k.a. Quas). Many Edomite personal names included Qos in the suffix much like YHWH is used in Hebrew names. Egyptian Pantheon2 Egyptian religion was never unified. Typically deities were prominent by locale. Only priests worshipped in the temples of the great gods and only when the gods were on parade did the populace get to worship them. These 'great gods' were treated like human kings by the priesthood: awakened in the morning with song; washed and dressed the image; served breakfast, lunch and dinner. -

INTRODUCTION Many attempting to make sense of prophetic literature in the Hebrew Bible would echo Carroll's assessment that "[t]o the modern reader the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel are virtually incomprehensible as books."1 For Carroll, the problem with reading these books as "books" is that there is a confusing mixture of prose and poetry, a lack of coherent order and arrange ment, and a shortage of necessary contextual information needed for accu rate interpretation.2 Despite the difficult compositional and historical issues associated with the book of Jeremiah, there is a growing consensus that -

Live By Faith May 23-29, 2021 MAIN POINT The Lord’s faithfulness to us compels our faithfulness to Him. INTRODUCTION What evidence can you offer that indicates we live in a society of broken promises? Besides marital infidelity, what are some other examples of broken promises and un faithful behavior? We live in a society too often characterized by broken promises and fractured relationships. The evidence is everywhere—spouses are unfaithful to one another, politicians fail to fulfill the promises made during their campaigns, and even close friends neglect to carry out promises made to one another. The Lord, however, is always faithful—and He expects His people to remain faithful to Him. In today’s passage, Jeremiah drew attention to a family whose devotion to a particular lifestyle illustrated the importance of remaining spiritually faithful. May we, too, learn from this ancient family’s example. UNDERSTANDING READ JEREMIAH 35:1-2, 5-8A. The Lord asked believers to model faithfulness to the world. What are some obstacles and temptations we may face in fulfilling this goal? What does it take to remain faithful to God despite these pressures? What are the consequences if we do not stay true to our commitments? Who are some individuals or groups of people you respect because of their faithful commitment to their beliefs? When you were growing up, did your family have any distinctive rules that helped you serve the Lord faithfully? Explain. READ JEREMIAH 35:12-14. Scott Jurek won the Western States 100 seven years in a row. (1999-2005) He won the Badwater twice. (2005-2006) [The Badwater is a 135 mile race death valley in July.] Tonight I want to talk to you about the Scott Jurek of faith. A man who went the distance and left behind him a heritage of faith like no other and yet a surprising number of people know almost nothing about him. His name is Jonadab or Jehonadab the son of Rechab. I. Who were the Rechabites? A. The Rechabites, interestingly enough, were not Israelites. 1. They were Kenites. (1 Chronicles 2:55) 2. The Kenites had come to dwell in Judah when that tribe took the land. Their connection is through Moses who married the daughter of a Kenite, probably Jethro. (Judges 1:16) B. The Patriarch of the family Jonadab (Jehonadab) was known for his zeal for the Lord. (2 Kings 10:15-16) [Jehu began his reign in 641 BC.] C. 230 to 240 years later, Jonadab’s family is noted for their faithfulness. (Jeremiah 35:1-16) [This happened in the reign of Jehoiakim. Jehoiakim ruled from 609 to 598 BC.] 1. A quick summary of Jeremiah 35:1-16. a. You shall not drink wine, you or your sons, forever. b. You shall not build a house. c. Athaliah, a treacherous queen: A careful analysis of her story in 2 Kings 11 and 2 Chronicles 22:10-23:21 Robin Gallaher Branch School of Biblical Sciences & Bible Languages Potchefstroom Campus North-West University POTCHEFSTROOM E-mail: [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Athaliah, a treacherous queen: A careful analysis of her story in 2 Kings 11 and 2 Chronicles 22:10-23:21 This article presents a critical look at the story of the reign of Athaliah, the only ruling queen of Israel or Judah in the biblical text. Double reference in 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles shows her story’s importance and significance to the biblical writers. The largely parallel accounts read like a contemporary soap opera, for they contain murder, intrigue, harem politics, religious upheaval, and coup and counter-coup. Her story provides insights on the turbulent political climate of the ninth century BC. However, the purpose of the biblical writers is not to show Athaliah as the epitome of evil or that all women in power are evil. Of Malachi Studies of the Old Testament's Ethical Dimensions
ABSTRACT The Moral World(s) of Malachi Studies of the Old Testament’s ethical dimensions have taken one of three approaches: descriptive, systematic, or formative. Descriptive approaches are concerned with the historical world, social context, and streams of tradition out of which OT texts developed and their diverse moral perspectives. Systematic approaches investigate principles and paradigms that encapsulate the unity of the OT and facilitate contemporary appropriation. Formative approaches embrace the diversity of the OT ethical witnesses and view texts as a means of shaping the moral imagination, fostering virtues, and forming character The major phase of this investigation pursues a descriptive analysis of the moral world of Malachi—an interesting case study because of its location near the end of the biblical history of Israel. A moral world analysis examines the moral materials within texts, symbols used to represent moral ideals, traditions that helped shape them, and the social world (political, economic, and physical) in which they are applied. This study contributes a development to this reading methodology through a categorical analysis of moral foundations, expectations, motives, and consequences. This moral world reading provides insight into questions such as what norms and traditions shaped the morals of Malachi’s community? What specific priorities, imperatives, and injunctions were deemed important? How did particular material, economic, and political interests shape moral decision-making? How did religious symbols bring together their view of the world and their social values? The moral world reading is facilitated by an exploration of Malachi’s social and symbolic worlds. Social science data and perspectives are brought together from an array of sources to present six important features of Malachi’s social world. -
