River, passing Liyu Lake, Shoufeng, and Fenglin all the way to Guangfu, this vast area comprises Hualien County, part of Taroko National Park and part of the East Coast. About a forty-minute drive by vehicle southwest of the city of Hualien, the largest city on Taiwan's east coast, gives rise to some truly dramatic and panoramic scenery.
14. General Information about Hualien
Taiwan is located on Eastern Asia, islands bordering the East China Sea, Philippine Sea, South China Sea, and Taiwan Strait, north of the Philippines, off the southeastern coast of China. Hualien is facing the immense Pacific Ocean off the east coast of Taiwan and against the grand Central Mountain Range in the west. It is approximately 4,628 square kilometers in area and is famous for its beautiful scenery. The east coast of Taiwan is situated where the Philippine Oceanic Plate and Euro-Asian Continental Plate meet. Weathering, erosion, and accumulation have produced a wide range of landforms here. The Central Mountain Range is covered with primeval forest. Therefore, plenty of water is stored on the mountains’ surfaces, which flows down the valley, forming a river. The east coast is bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the east, with more than 300 kilometers of coast line. In addition, the Coast is rich in marine ecology. Crowds of bottlenose dolphins, spinner dolphins, Risso's dolphins, Fraser’s dolphins, and Pantropical spotted dolphins leaping from water and then plopping back again, give every visitor fantastic impressions.
