For V•ce Prestdent G. Wtlliarn Joyner The philosophy behind the numbers ( '66), Opemng Com·ocalton meatli the Jlarl of another banner year I am especially fond of the instructions Hann1b al gave his troops: ''Bring me nothing but bad news; good news weakens me" As we reflect on th is past year's fundraising good news, many of us at Wake Forest are feeling some weakness but not the complacency implictt 1n Hannibal's words. The gift of the RJR-Nabisco World Headquaners building was the largest unrestricted corporate gift in the h1story of higher education. More than that, tt was a vote of confidence in the fu ture of Wake Forest and will continue to strengthen the programs of the schools of law and management and to reflect RJR Nabisco's pan in educating leaders tn law and business. The RJR Nabisco gift was the highl1ght of a year in which we recorded the greatest number of major corporate, foundation, and individual gifts in Wake Forest's history. This record has led to much discussion on campus and 1n our volunteer groups about why indiv1duals, corporations and foundations are respond1ng with such unprecedented generos1ry. At the request of the Un1versity editor, I spent time this summer trying to p1npoint some reasons for our good fortune. CHANGING OF THE First and foremost, Wake Forest did not receive gifts because our staff asked GUARD: Dall.u Mackey (left! for them, Instead, rhey were g1ven by those who recognize that support of strong, congratulate/ R1cbard He
