Intramural Rules

Team Requirements: ● A team will consist of a maximum of 7 players on the court at one time, including goalie. ● A minimum of 4 players are required to start a game. ● A minimum of 2 girls must be on the court at all times for coed league.

Equipment ● Athletic shoes must be worn at all times. ● Shirts must be worn at all times. ● No jewelry. ● Pennies must be worn at all times. Pennies must be worn over a shirt. ○ Players must show SMC or state ID to supervisor and/or scorekeeper in order to receive a penny and for verification that they are on the roster.

Gameplay ● Game time is start time. ● Two 20 minute halves, 5 minute halftime. ● Rock, paper, scissors for possession of ball for throw-off. ● Game clock is a “running clock.” Clock will only stop during the last 2 minutes of the second half. ● Substitutions can be made on stoppage time only. ● Game begins with a throw-off. Throw off must take place on the sideline at the centerline. ● A player cannot take more than 2 steps when holding the ball or hold it for more than 3 seconds before passing, shooting, or dribbling. ○ While holding the ball, a player may establish a pivot foot, but each step taken with non-pivot foot counts as a step. ● When shooting or passing, a player may be in the air over the goal area circle as long as their takeoff was from outside the goal area line and they release the ball before touching the ground inside the area. ● There is no limit on dribbling the ball (however double dribbles are not allowed). ● Goalies cannot overhand throw the ball beyond the half court, but can roll and kick the ball past half court. If so, possession of ball is overturned. ● Goalie box is from the white line in front of the goal extending to the side walls. ● A goal-throw is awarded when ○ The ball rebounds off the goalkeeper over the end-line ○ The ball is thrown over the end-line by the attacking team ● No touching the ball below the knees. Goalies may use kick saves within the goalie box. ● Throw-ins are taken at the point where the ball goes out of bounds on the sideline. If the goalie is the last player to touch the ball before it goes out of bounds beyond the goal line, it is the goalie’s ball. ● Free throws: for a minor or violation outside of the goal arc, a free throw is awarded to the opponent at the exact spot it took place.

Tie Breakers/Overtime: ● Rock, paper, scissors is played for possession of the ball. ● First team to score in the overtime period wins the the game. ● Overtime = 5 minutes of Golden Goal. ● If neither team scored during the overtime period, the game ends in a tie (except during playoffs) ○ In playoffs, if no goal is scored during overtime period, a best of 5 shoot-out will ensue, similar to a soccer shootout.

Penalties: Penalties range from removal of player for a set time to ejection of player, CampusRec Supervisor and Officials have final say over matters. ● 1 yellow card = 3 minutes off the field, cannot come on the court again until told to do so by . ● 2 yellow cards/1 red card = sit out rest of the game, must talk to Josh Harper or Scott Ohlendorf. ● No self-passes. ● No knocking the ball from an opponent’s hand. ● No diving. ● No pulling, punching, or otherwise attempting to dislodge the ball from an opponent’s possession (blocking shots are allowed, trying to strip the ball is not) ● Penalty throws: ○ A penalty throw is given when an offensive player is fouled flagrantly and/or an offensive scoring chance was destroyed due to a defensive violation. ○ All other players must be behind the half-court line until the ball has left the thrower’s hand. ● Penalty throws are awarded when ○ A foul destroys a clear chance to score ○ Any foul is called in the goal area. ○ The goalie carries the ball back into his/her own goal area ○ A defensive player enters his/her own goal area to gain an advantage over an attacking player in possession of the ball. ● No stalling. This is called passive play, and it results in change of possession of the ball. ● No excessive aggressiveness. ● No profanity. Players who use profanity on the court will have an immediate rejection from the game. No exceptions. Must talk with Josh Harper and Scott Ohlendorf. ● No food or sports drinks (ex. Gatorade, powerade) allowed on the court, only water.
