Current incident investigation processes are not as effective, and we need them to be better so we can to learn from past incidents and improve processes to prevent future incidents. We must stop just filling out forms and move to finding the true causes so we can make improvements and reduce risk. It’s time we talked about it, self- evaluated this process, and upgrade our thinking, knowledge and skills as safety leaders. 7:30 am Clint Malachuk- Former NHL | Mental Health Advocate Ammar & Candice No job in the world of sports is as intimidating, exhilarating, and as stress-ridden as that of an NHL hockey CONFIRMED goaltender. Now imagine doing that job while suffering high anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and depression, and having your career nearly cut short by a skate slicing across your neck. Clint Malarchuk shares his extraordinary and heart-wrenching life story—which includes his long battle with alcoholism and almost ending his life by a gunshot to the head—in his relentless effort to help end the stigma of mental illness and to help others who may suffer as well.

Malarchuk, who was born in Grand Prairie, , and raised in , played junior hockey in the . He went on to play professionally in the NHL for the , the Washington

Capitals, and the , and in the IHL for the Las Vegas Thunder. He compiled a career record of 141 wins, 130 losses, 45 ties, 12 , and an .885 save percentage.

After leaving the NHL as a player, he served as head coach of the IHL Las Vegas Thunder and the . He was then a goaltending coach for the NHL and the . He became the goaltending consultant for the in 2010, going from there to the , and retiring from the team in 2014.

His memoir, The Crazy Game: How I Survived in the Crease and Beyond, was published in 2014.

10:30 am Study on the use of dust-extraction vacuums in the BC construction industry- Shalinda Shalfie- Ammar UBC NOT Vacuums are widely employed in the construction industry as one of the key control methods for silica CONFIRMED dust. Workers rely on their optimal performance to protect themselves from this invisible hazard. However, studies on the performance of vacuums in the field has been limited. In this presentation, we will discuss the different factors that affect the performance of a vacuum system such as on the type and configuration of vacuum, the frequency of maintenance as well as the work-practices of the person using the vacuum. We will also share practical information and answer common questions from both operators of vacuums and safety personnel regarding vacuum selection and maintenance and discuss how proper handling of vacuums can reduce harmful exposures to the operator and others. We expect to demonstrate new training tools aimed at improving vacuum use on BC construction sites.

2:15 pm Safety 2 Implemented- Kody Messenger Ammar/Candice In this presentation Kody hopes to present an entertaining and informative review of two years CONFIRMED of commitment and open implementation of some of the concepts of “Safety 2”, “Safety Differently”, and Human and Organization Performance. Kody Messenger is a Managing Partner at Enger Safety, a Senior Level Advisor, and Education Designer. In this role he functions as the primary vision caster for Enger’s suite of clients, he assists organizations navigate through complex legal challenges, and unique operational challenges. What he truly enjoys professionally is seeing organizations get back to the businesses that they are good at, and unleashing their workforces to be brave and innovative in their work.

Kody has been operating in the health and safety atmosphere since transitioning from his trade as an underwater welder. This past experience has been a major influence on his operating principles in his practice as an OSH professional. Building on the idea that the people in the organizations are the heroes of safety success; that safety is so much more than just the absence of acci- dents; and that given the opportunity and resources the innovation and resilience of people will surprise you.

Born in Nova Scotia, Kody grew up exploring the forests and sea floors of Atlantic Canada. Which lead him into the field of Commercial Diving, after spending time floating around the country, Kody began to be dissuaded about how safety treated people. So instead of moping about it, he switched jobs and hasn’t looked back since. Except for really sunny warm days, he looks back then. Kody is a pragmatist at heart, with a love for people and the joy of work.

3:15 pm Regulation of the Safety Profession- Mike Fedun- The New Face of OH Professionals- No title or scope of Ammar practice protection under law. Recognize and regulate the profession under law. CONFIRMED Within the provincial jurisdiction to establish regulations, it has to have an underpinning in a national framework.

Currently in the field of occupational health and safety there is no title or scope of practice protection under law. Competent, experienced, and ethical occupational health and safety professionals save lives; therefore, it is imperative that the profession evolve into one that is recognized and regulated under law, and is as respected as any other profession (e.g., engineering, law, medicine). The Alberta Society of Health and Safety Professionals was created to achieve this goal and elevate the profession. Learn about the first 16 months of operation, progress made and opportunities ahead.
