At last November’s general election I was elected to represent the people of Dunedin North. I am the Labour party’s replacement for Pete Hodgson, who committed himself to serving Dunedin North for 21 years. With the help of nearly 13,000 supporters who signed the petition, we’ve done it – Invermay is here to stay. I’m absolutely delighted that the Government has committed to maintaining Invermay’s staff and location. This is a win for Dunedin, but it’s also a win for agriculture. Invermay has an international reputation for excellence, and it has contributed hugely to New Zealand’s agricultural productivity. Now it can continue to do so.   • Dunedin Town Belt
    Dunedin Town Belt The Town Belt is a green belt which surrounds the centre of the New Zealand city of Dunedin. Covering a total of over 200 hectares (490 acres), it extends around three sides of the city's centre at a distance from it of some 1-3 km (1-2 mi) in a broad 7 km (4 mi) crescent from the Oval at Kensington in the south through the suburbs of Mornington, City Rise, Belleknowes, Roslyn, Maori Hill, Prospect Park, Glenleith, Woodhaugh, The Gardens and Dunedin North and the slopes of Signal Hill. The fourth side of the central city is bounded by the Otago Harbour. One of the world's oldest green belts, the Town Belt was planned in Scotland at the time of the advent of the Otago settlement in 1848.[1] Residential areas outside the belt became separate boroughs, and were not amalgamated with Dunedin until much later. The town belt now forms a break between the city's inner and Approximate extent of Dunedin's Town outer suburbs. The belt was originally a combination of native bush Belt, shown in green. and scrubland, but is now largely replanted forest and open parkland. Many species of plant can be found in the belt, including tree fuchsia, lemonwood, lancewood, manuka, and broadleaf, and the forested area is home to many species of birds, including some uncommon and endangered species such as the kereru, eastern rosella, bellbird, tomtit, tui, rifleman, morepork, and shining cuckoo, and kotare. A long, narrow road, Queens Drive, winds along much of the length of the belt and provides easy access to it for Dunedinites.

The death late last year of a promising oral surgeon has again tragically brought cycle safety back into sharp focus. I’ve received increased correspondence in the time since Dr Li Hong’s tragic death on our one- way traffic system late last year. During the first few months of the year, I’ve met with cycle advocate, and director of the Preventive and Social Medicine, Injury Prevention Research Unit, Hank Weiss. My appointment as Economic Development Spokesperson comes with a big challenge. We need to present a credible plan to get to a prosperous, diversified economy. I’m excited about this opportunity. I’ve always maintained that the market makes an excellent servant and a terrible master. And this Government is failing to control the market. It is failing to deliver jobs. Right now, so many hard- working New Zealanders are being treated like its slaves, forced to be grateful for any scraps that fall from the table. A full 40% of Kiwis earn less than a living wage.

    President’s Message Welcome to the new season. I wish you a happy and enjoyable year and hope you achieve all that you aim to get out of the season, be it winning club champs, centre titles or just having a great time with your friends and fellow bowlers. With COVID 19 abruptly ending our last season, lets hope we have seen the last of that and be able to concentrate on an uninterrupted bowling programme for the next year. Thank you to all the behind the scene volunteers, officials, umpires, markers and everyone else that make the season possible. I encourage you to help and urge new and old bowlers to get to the greens, they are fundamental to the success of bowls in NZ. Finally, I would like to thank our many sponsors that help make it possible to run our bowls tournaments and contribute in other ways to the continued success of the Clubs in the centre.
