John 2:13-25 MARCH 7, 2021

In this weekend’s Gospel reading we hear about people sitting in the house of God and using it as a house of gamblings and betting. They are putting their hope of wealth into money instead of the Virtue of Hope which is centered around God. We may also find our- selves sitting in the pews at church thinking about winning the lottery, about gambling on the weekend to make that extra cash that PRINT PAGES 2,7 might lighten our load or bring us joy. This is false hope. It may bring us momentary happiness but that fades. The only true hope is in God, Our Father. We see in our Gospel reading that Christ cleared the temple. He cleared it of the hope that only offered tempo- rary happiness and instead made them open their eyes to the true hope, the temple of God. Let us learn from this and move from our OTHER PAGES ARE false hope and distractions at Mass and to really go there to pray and worship Jesus. Let us show Him the gratitude we have for Him THE SAME IN as we repent in these forty days in preparation for His death and resurrection.

ST. ANTHONY AND Scrutinies We are starting with the first scrutiny this Sunday. Each week we will celebrate a scrutiny in order to deliver the elect from sin and to ST. CECILIA AND protect them from temptation. The scrutinies and their accompanying exorcisms are a series of rites that cannot be condensed in time; they need time “to GO BACK WITH work.” Nor should we diminish their ritual symbols of silence, posture, litany, and handlaying. The scrutinies focus as much on the grace of God as on the sin of humanity. We can’t truly call a scrutiny a Christian rite of initiation unless our self-searching leads to acknowledgment and praise of Christ who saves us. ST. CECILIA The scrutinies are for the elect, not for the baptized, for we believe that baptism matters. That is, when one is baptized, one is freed from the power of sin. The baptized are no longer enslaved by Satan. Those who have not yet entered the waters of the font are still vulnerable; they have not yet been clothed with Christ; they have not yet been reborn as new creations. That is why those who have already been released from the devil’s grip are able to pray these scrutinies and exorcisms for the elect.

On Tuesday, he will finish the series with The Eucharist: Symbol or Substantial Presence. There will be opportunities for the sacrament of reconciliation on Tuesday evening. PASTOR’S RAMBLINGS | 4

1 | BRENDAN GOTTA. Our first speaker for our young adults Pints with Priests was Brendan Gotta, a young adult from Ohio and creator of the podcast “Gotta Be .” He led us in a discussion about Reclaiming Purpose. He read from Scripture, and used Andrew and John’s encounter with Jesus to pose the questions: “What are we looking for? How can we find purpose in our lives?” Ultimately, we have to follow Him, as the first disciples did. Brendan also shared the importance of looking at the examples of the saints, specifically St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Therese 1 of Lisieux, St. Josephine Bahkita, St. John Paul II, and St. Mark Ji Tianxiang. Afterwards, the young adults enjoyed a wine & cheese social in the Commons.

2 | NEW BABY. We want to welcome new parishioner, PRINT PAGES 2,7 baby Agatha Marie Findley, daughter of parishioners Angelle and Josh Findley. Angelle is involved in the St. OTHER PAGES ARE Cecilia Mom’s Group and has been leading the Familia group at our parish. ANTHONY AND We are looking for a parishioner to work in the school cafeteria for 4 hours a day. This is a paid position and it is ST. CECILIA AND part time. The position is during school hours, with major holidays and summers off. If interested please contact Jill GO BACK WITH 2 Woolwine of Sycamore Schools at 513.686.1700. 4 | LENTEN THINGS. I just want to share what I am ST. CECILIA doing for lent. I hope I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew. Besides my personal prayer and devotions, I am 3 reading Fr. Jim Willigs book, doing Dynamic Catholic’s Best Lent Ever, as well Fr. Mike Schmitz “Bible in a Year” podcast. Any one of these things could be easily done by themselves. Whatever you decide to do to be more grounded in Christ, I commend you for your efforts.

5 | ONE GOD. The USCCB has decreed a change in the Roman Missal. In the translation of the collects, “one” is to be omitted before “God.” It will now read, “God, for ever and ever.” It had been, “one God, for ever and ever” but Cardinal Sarah noted that there wasn’t the word “one” mentioned in the Latin translation. It is now translated correctly. “Deus, per omnia saecula saeculorum.” 4 5 EASTSIDE FAITH | 5
