CHAIRMAN: Hon. Members, I refer with profound sorrow to the passing away of Shri Khamsum Namgyal Pulger, Shri S.B. Ramesh Babu, Shri Rishang Keishing, former Members of this House, Shri Arjan Singh, Marshal of the Indian Air Force, Shri Jayantilal Barot, Shri Makhan Lal Fotedar, Shri Gaya Singh, Dr. Ishwar Chandra Gupta, Shri Mirza Irshadbaig and Shri Sukomal Sen, former Members of this House. Shri Khamsum Namgyal Pulger passed away on the 7th of July, 2017 at the age of 91 years. Born in October, 1926 at Darjeeling in West Bengal, Shri Pulger was educated at the St. Roberts School, Darjeeling. A social worker, Shri Khamsum Namgyal Pulger represented the State of Sikkim in this House for a brief period, from the 20th of October, 1987, to the 1st of March, 1988. ___________________________________________________ This Synopsis is not an authoritative record of the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha. 1 Shri S.B. Ramesh Babu passed away on the 27th July, 2017, at the age of 68 years. Born in February, 1949 at Hyderabad in Telangana, Shri Ramesh Babu was educated at the Badruka College of Arts and Commerce and the Law College, Osmania University at Hyderabad. An advocate and social worker, Shri Ramesh Babu was active in sports and other extra curricular activities during his student days. He worked for the upliftment of the weaker and downtrodden sections of the society. He served as the President and Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Coordination Council and as President of several employees associations.

    0 1 2020 Summer Olympics (Tokyo Olympics 2020) 2 • Tokyo was selected as the host city during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 7 September 2013. • Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the event was postponed to 2021 in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first such instance in the history of the Olympic Games (previous games had been cancelled but not rescheduled). • The 2020 Games are the fourth Olympic Games to be held in Japan, following the Tokyo 1964 (Summer), Sapporo 1972 (Winter), and Nagano 1998 (Winter) games. 3 • Tokyo is the first city in Asia to hold the Summer Games twice. • The 2020 Games are the second of three consecutive Olympics to be held in East Asia, following the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and preceding the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. • The 2020 Games introduced new competitions and re-introduced competitions that once were held but were subsequently removed. • New ones include 3x3 basketball, freestyle BMX and mixed gender team events in a number of existing sports, as well as the return of madison cycling for men and an introduction of the same event for women. 4 • New IOC policies also allow the host organizing committee to add new sports to the Olympic program for just one Games. The disciplines added by the Japanese Olympic Committee are baseball, softball, karate, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding, the last four of which make their Olympic debuts. 5 • The opening ceremony was held on 23 July 2021 in the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.

    DAILY UPDATED CURRENT AFFAIRS – 07.07.2018 TO 09.07.2018 NATIONAL Election Commission launches app to help voters report poll code violations (a) The Election Commission launched an Android-based app, which allows voters to send geo-tagged videos and photos of any violations that take place during elections, including distribution of money or gifts by political parties or even hate speeches being made while canvassing. (b) The app known as „cVIGIL‟, which stands for “citizens‟ vigil”, was tested on a pilot basis during the recently concluded polls in Karnataka‟s Bengaluru. (c) The election commission has now decided to extend the service during the upcoming assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram. (d) Chief election commissioner OP Rawat. (c) The CMSMS is web based GIS application through which location of sites for unauthorised mining can be detected. (d) It aimed at reporting, monitoring and taking suitable action on unauthorised coal mining activities. (e) Khan Prahari is tool used for reporting any activity taking place related to illegal coal mining like rat hole mining, pilferage etc. (f) Using it, one can upload geo-tagged photographs of incident along with textual information directly to system.
