  • From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition
From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition GEOFF WATSON Abstract Formerly rather uniform in pattern, sporting biographies have evolved significantly since the 1970s, becoming much more open in their criticism of teammates and administrators as well as being more revealing of their subject’s private lives. This article identifies three transitional phases in the genre; a chronological era, extending from the early twentieth century until the 1960s; an indirectly confessional phase between the 1970s and mid 1980s and an openly confessional phase from the mid-1980s. Despite these changes, sporting biographies continue to reinforce the dominant narratives around sport in New Zealand. New Zealand sporting biographies have a mixed reputation in literary and scholarly circles. Often denigrated for their allegedly formulaic style, they have also been criticised for their lack of insight into New Zealand society.1 Representative of this critique is Lloyd Jones, who wrote in 1999, “sport hardly earns a mention in our wider literature, and … the rest of society is rarely, if ever, admitted to our sports literature.”2 This article examines this perspective, arguing that sporting biographies afford a valuable insight into New Zealand’s changing self- image and values. Moreover, it will be argued that the nature of sporting biographies themselves has changed significantly since the 1980s and that they have become much more open in their discussion of teammates and the personal lives of their subjects. Whatever one’s perspective on the literary merits of sporting biographies, their popular appeal is undeniable. Whereas the print run of most scholarly texts in New Zealand is at best a few thousand, sporting biographies consistently sell in the tens of thousands.

  • The Judicial Disciplinary Procedures of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union
317 THE JUDICIAL DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES OF THE NEW ZEALAND RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION Maryanne Haggie * This paper examines the model established by the New Zealand Rugby Football Union Inc (NZRFU) to deal with acts of violence on the rugby field. Love it or hate it, rugby is a metaphor. It can be used to define and describe the good and the bad of New Zealand society... Maybe it's a truism to say that a country's national game is a clue to its national soul, but there can be few better clues. 1 I INTRODUCTION International success may be one reason why there is passion for rugby in New Zealand. It shows that a small nation can succeed against bigger, more powerful adversaries. The nature of the rugby game also reflects dominant New Zealand ideals such as egalitarianism and teamwork combined with individual skills and strength.2 Rugby engages the bodies of an estimated 150,000 New Zealanders3 and many more are coaching, managing, refereeing, washing jerseys or expressing their opinions on talkback radio. Most New Zealanders have a robust opinion about rugby, whether it be positive or negative. * This is an edited version of a paper submitted in fulfilment of the LLB(Hons) legal writing requirement. 1 Finlay McDonald The Game of Our Lives (Penguin Books Ltd, Auckland, 1996) 1. 2 See: W H Oliver and B R Williams (eds) The Oxford History of New Zealand (Oxford University Press, Wellington, 1981) 277278. 3 Statistics New Zealand Facts About New Zealand (2 ed, Daphne Brasell & Associates, Wellington, 1995) 130.

  • Learning the Real Rugby Lessons in New Zealand͛
UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND t/EdZ>dhZ^ϮϬϭϭ͗Et>E͛^Zh'ztKZ> ͚LEARNING THE REAL RUGBY LESSONS IN NEW ZEALAND͛ Professor Brad Jackson, Fletcher Building Education Trust Chair in Leadership August 9, 2011 1. BACKGROUND There is a certain delicious irony that I am giving this lecture that would not be lost on my former school mates at the Duke of York͛Ɛ Royal Military School. I am a confirmed soccer nut; I finally hung up my boots last year after 45 years. I arrived at the school in 1971 reasonably optimistic that I would be able to ĐŚĂŶŐĞƚŚĞƐĐŚŽŽů͛Ɛsingular obsession with rugby as well as its deeply held suspicion of all things related to soccer. Needless to say I failed miserably. At our school we had not just one but two hierarchiesʹ the civilian one and the military one. A keen leadership observer even in those days, I was struck that most of the First XV always seemed to find their way into positions of authority within both hierarchies to the exclusion of non-rugby playing pupils. A leadership lesson I learned early on was that prowess on the rugby field was equated with leadership capability. The same connection is widely recognised within Corporate AustralasiaͶit was most dramatically symbolised by the appointment of David Kirk, the only All Blacks captain still to lift the William Webb Ellis trophy, to become the CEO of Fairfax media. I did find it interesting, however, that the one old boy of the school who was selected to pull on an England shirt, Maurice Colclaugh, possessed a rebellious streak which placed him at the bottom end of both hierarchies.
