It is a history written by Hilly Kristal, the founder of CBGB and OMFUG. The question most often asked of me is, "What does CBGB stand for?" I reply, "It stands for the kind of music I intended to have, but not the kind that we became famous for: COUNTRY BLUEGRASS BLUES." The next question is always, "but what does OMFUG stand for?" and I say "That's more of what we do, It means OTHER MUSIC FOR UPLIFTING GORMANDIZERS." And what is a gormandizer? It’s a voracious eater of, in this case, MUSIC. […] The obvious follow up question is often "is this your favorite kind of music?" No!!! I've always liked all kinds but half the radio stations all over the U.S. were playing country music, cool juke boxes were playing blues and bluegrass as well as folk and country. Also, a lot of my artist/writer friends were always going off to some fiddlers convention (bluegrass concert) or blues and folk festivals. So I thought it would be a whole lot of fun to have my own club with all this kind of music playing there. Unfortunately—or perhaps FORTUNATELY—things didn't work out quite the way I 'd expected. That first year was an exercise in persistence and a trial in patience. My determination to book only musicians who played their own music instead of copying others, was indomitable.

Review: In ‘Spectre,’ Daniel Craig Is Back as James Bond, No Surprise By MANOHLA DARGISNOV. 5, 2015 Does it mean something that James Bond drinks a dirty martini in “Spectre,” the latest in the seemingly unkillable franchise? As more of an amateur in all-things Bond, I had hoped a dirty bomb would go boom or that the actress Léa Seydoux would do something unspeakable to Daniel Craig. Part of the bankable pleasure of the series, after all, is that every so often, among the usual guns and girls, the unexpected happens — a bikini stops the film, a villain revs it up , Bond surprises. There’s nothing surprising in “Spectre,” the 24th “official” title in the series, which is presumably as planned. Much as the perfect is the enemy of good, originality is often the enemy of the global box office. And so, for the fourth time, Mr. Craig has suited up to play the British spy who’s saving the world one kill at a time, with Sam Mendes occupying the director’s chair for a second turn. They’re a reasonable fit, although their joint seriousness has started to feel more reflexive than honest, especially because every Bond movie inevitably shakes off ambition to get down to the blockbuster business of hurling everything — bodies, bullets, fireballs, debris, money — at the screen. Before that happens here, there’s the usual narrative busywork that plays as if it were written by committee, which it was (John Logan, Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Jez Butterworth). If you have watched one Bond movie, you know the score.

PER VIKSTRAND (Uppsala ) ON THE USE OF WOMEN’S NAMES IN IAN FLEMING’S JAMES BOND NOVELS Abstract. This paper deals with the use of women’s names in Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels. Fleming’s main naming strategy was to choose names that tell us something about the characters, names that correspond to their personalities, their occupations or the roles they play in the stories. This is often achieved by providing them with allusive names that hint at several meanings, using polysemy, etymology, or lexical or even phonological associations. Many of these names are given an explanation in the novels, but underneath this explanation there are al - ways others. Special attention has been paid to the cases where I believe the hero - ines do not have allusive names. I suggest that this has to do with the fact that these women are the ones with the most complex and real characters, and real characters must have real names. Reasons for studying Ian Fleming Between 1953 and 1965 the British author Ian Fleming published twelve novels and a number of short stories featuring his hero James Bond. 1 Regarding the literary qualities of his writing, opinions are divided. Although Fleming had influential admirers such as Anthony Burgess and Raymond Chandler, he is not generally regarded as a distinguished author. However, I believe that the justification for studying Fleming’s work stems not from its literary value, but from the outstanding impact of its leading character, Commander James Bond of the British Secret Service. James Bond has become something of an archetype in modern popular culture.
