Gold Sponsor:

Silver Sponsor: VOLUME 33, ISSUE 8 P A G E 4 From the President…. Greetings to all of our chapter members! This being my second message to the Chapter as president I have donned my top hat and ascended to the podium. Not four score but fifteen years ago I joined IFMA while work- ing in construction and going to school nights to obtain an Associate’s Degree in Facility Management. I also finished earning my Facility Man- agement Professional (FMP) certification through IFMA during that time. When the bottom fell out of the construction market in 2008 I was pre- pared to transition careers.

The FMP certification, I was to find out later, was instrumental in obtaining employment with the Greater Chicago Food Depository as an Assistant Facility Manager. I have since progressed to Facility Manager and now hold the title of Director of Facilities. I have also earned the Sus- tainability Facility Professional and the Certified Facility Manager cre- dentials. I am a committed lifetime learner and I try to keep current with the latest Facility Management standards, trends and best practices.

I look forward in the coming years to sharing new practices and technology with you while learning from you as I always have. I will try to continue the progress made by my predecessors as we strive to help each other seek solutions to our day to day problems. To that end I give you my email that we may have an open forum on topics of the day: [email protected]

Upcoming meetings include: August 8 - Associate Showcase and Auction, Chandlers in Schaum- burg, September 14 - NI IFMA Golf Outing, Seven Bridges Golf Club

Finally with the goal in mind of being a “Social Media” president I have decided to open a Twitter account and Tweet all forth coming mes- sages to you all at 3 a.m. The phrase that pays is “Tweet me Please!” I will see you on the 8th in Schaumburg.

We surveyed the chapter and asked questions about dues. Based on the responses, chapter members were in favor of raising the dues and making the meetings at no additional charge. The chapter has submitted paperwork to change our dues and our change has been approved by IFMA. Our fiscal year ends in June of 2017. Starting our new fiscal year, our chapter dues will go from $92 to $212. This is an increase of $120 or the equivalent of 4 meetings. The advantage to this is that, when you renew, you will receive all the monthly meetings at no additional cost. This will not include our networking events or the holiday party. Until your renewal for the 2017-2018 fiscal year, you will still be charged the monthly fee of $30 to attend. Once you have renewed under the new dues structure, your meetings will be free. If you have any questions, please contact our chapter administrator at chapteradministra- [email protected].

AN UPDATE—if you renew in July or August, IFMA sent out the invoices prior to our dues change being approved. If you want to pay the new NI IFMA dues rate, call IFMA HQ and they will adjust your invoice to reflect the new dues structure. If you choose to not do this, you will continue to pay for our monthly meetings as normal until your membership comes up again for renewal next year.

2017 Day of Service Saturday, September 16

This year we will be volunteering at the Great Western Prairie in Elmhurst. The Great Western Prairie is a unique 6-acre parcel of untouched land that runs parallel to the Illinois Prairie Path from Spring Road to Salt Creek. It is home to more than 100 different types of native plants and dates back to the time before European settlement of the area.

We will be performing various tasks from picking up debris, cutting out invasive plants and quite possibly collecting seeds to help repopulate the native plants and to reconstitute other prairies around the Chicago area. Volunteers are asked to wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts, sturdy closed-toe shoes and to bring work gloves and hats. It also is suggested that you bring mosquito repellent and sun screen. Please bring loppers or other cutting tools, if you have them. Spouses and children are welcome to participate but the prairie is rather tall so it is not a good environment for small children.

We will be meeting at the Illinois Prairie Path located at Berkley Avenue and Prairie Path Lane in Elmhurst at 9 AM and working until Noon. Parking is available along the Illinois Prairie Path.

Please contact Linda McInerney at 847-559-3909 or [email protected] for more information or to volunteer.

Job Net

Networking is about more than schmoozing and exchanging business cards. Often it is about helping others through sharing information. Need an example? Our own Mark Kischner, CFM recently posted a helpful reply on the new IFMA Engage All Member Community forum (https://engage.ifma.org). An IFMA mem- ber from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada asked to hear about experiences with sealers for exterior concrete giv- en the high use of snow and ice melting compounds up north. Mark described a recent project and the prod- ucts he used. Helping each other through networking and sharing information. It’s a benefit of IFMA mem- bership. And it might even be good for your career.
