Judogi

Regulations In accordance with Judo …by Gerald Okimura (PJC)

All judoka strive to get an advantage over the other contestant at a shiai or over their randori partner at the dojo to successfully complete a waza (technique). These advantages include kumikata (grip), kuzushi (balance) or tai sabaki (movement) and are skilled-based. To ensure skill is the main parameter during a contest, the IJF rules attempt to negate non-skill based advantages. This includes illegal judogi.

Imagine you are in a bobsled event. Your sled meets all requirements but your opponent illegally modifies theirs to attain an unfair edge. Skill is not the factor here and the same holds true for Judo. An ill-fitting, short, tight judogi increases the difficulty of getting fair kumikata.

The IJF established new judogi sizing and supplier regulations in 2014 for implementation in April 2015. In an attempt to defer costs of purchasing 100% conforming judogi and to allow judoka time to purchase new ones, delayed the implementation date and sizing requirement for our national events. Judo Ontario followed suit for Judo Ontario sponsored qualifiers and above, and sanctioned club shiai.

Starting September 2015 at all national events and all Judo Canada qualifying events such as Ontario Open, Quebec Open, Pacific International, etc., all judogi must

conform to IJF sizing regulations but do not need to be

manufactured by a designated manufacturer.

Ontario Youth International Shiai

By Carol Lin

On Saturday, February 6th, 2016, Judo Ontario hosted the Ontario Youth International Shiai in Whitby. This event was a Qualifier for U16, U18, and U21 athletes planning to compete at the Canadian National Championships in May. It was a successful event with 22 Dojos represented from across Ontario.

This year, the U14 age group was added to registration. The young judoka showed excellent skill and sportsmanship as newcomers to the event. We are pleased to say 22 U14 medals (8 Gold, 7 Silver, and 7 Bronze) were awarded. The most medals of all four age groups! Thanks to all Dojos for encouraging their judoka to participate. For many, it was their first time competing in a Judo Ontario hosted event.

The top three performing Dojos (by total medals) and medal distribution were:
