When you are on a herb-hunt in the company of National Park Rangers you are not likely just to pass by an edible “herb”. Indeed, should you be on the point of walking past any of them – and they really thrive in the mountain meadows – your Ranger will call out “Hang on, there’s something for us to sample here too. Look this is yarrow and lady’s mantle!” And what happens then is that you pick the herbs together, prepare a National Park herb spread right in the meadow itself and then try it for taste.

The oldest alpine pastures in : the cluster of 19 stone-built houses and the quaint Maria-Hilf chapel are among the most popular photo motifs in the Hohe Tauern National Park.

The tour takes you past lake Salzbodensee and the Auge Gottes (The Eye of God) with its covering of cotton grass, as far as the awesome glacial abrasions of the Schlatenkees glacier.

These are situated on opposite sides of the Debanttal valley, in the Carinthian sector of the National Park. The tour through this wild, romantic valley will allow you learn a lot about the lakes and about the abundance of water in the Hohe Tauern.

This attractive valley crossing (from the Defereg- gental and across into the Virgental) begins with a shared taxi ride from Virgen to the Defereggental. The tour starts from Speikbodenhütte (alpine hut), and continues through flowering meadows to Speikboden.
