Any FCPS employee or community member may nominate new teachers for this award.

Elementary New Teacher Finalists

Amelia Kirsten Carr, Kindergarten Teacher Bucknell Elementary School, Region 3

Walking past Amelia’s kindergarten classroom, you’ll probably hear singing, see children dancing, and multiple hands raised proudly ready to add into the current discussion. Amelia equally cares about her students’ emotional development and their academic growth. She understands children learn best when they feel welcomed, loved, and represented. Due to the classroom community Amelia has created, her students debate in Socratic Seminars, discuss current events, interview community helpers, play, and elevate their math and reading skills. Amelia allows her students to bring their individuality into her classroom and collaborates with other teachers. She makes silly videos for brain breaks and to teach sight words along with using arts integration lessons and culturally responsive teaching to reach and connect with every student.

Olivia S. Dowd, Music Teacher Ravensworth Elementary School, Region 4

Olivia’s core values are fostering relationships with students and colleagues, centering on equity and inclusion, and modelling empathy. Each morning she greets students by name from kindergarten to sixth grade, engaging them and welcoming them to our school community. She continues this engagement throughout the school day by creating a caring culture with each class she sees, providing students a space to be enthusiastically themselves and to take risks. She has been focusing on teaching music through an antiracist lens and celebrating the diverse world of music. Olivia remains a lifelong learner—she is an active researcher and presenter on the ethic of care in music education and has presented at multiple domestic and international conferences.

Anson works to make his classroom inclusive and acknowledges the unique qualities each student brings to his class. She empowers others to build positive relationships and never asks others to do what she isn’t willing to do herself. Allison is serving as acting principal for the third time in eight years and has risen to the occasion by demonstrating effective leadership and tremendous calm during a global pandemic. Allison takes pride in her school community and because of her leadership, the Sangster staff and students have gone beyond what they thought was possible this year.

Brandon Morehead, Assistant Administrator Interagency Alternative Schools, Non-Region

Brandon is a champion of students. “All students are capable of success…no exceptions” is a belief that motivates Brandon’s work as a leader and is what drives him when making all decisions for the students he serves in the Interagency Alternative Schools Program. He knows that in order for all students to be successful, a great staff promoting that same vision and drive for students is imperative. Brandon works to create a welcoming and caring culture where all staff feel supported and appreciated. Important to that is his open door policy where staff and students feel comfortable coming to him with any question or need.

Abigail L. Ragan, Assistant Principal Saratoga Elementary School, Region 3
