Tina Rasmussen Artistic Director 7 A maverick creator returns with a stunning new work. Alain Platel’s creations have profoundly influenced contemporary dance all over the world. Now, he comes to World Stage with Out of Context − for Pina , a major hit with audiences and critics alike since its premiere in Brussels. Platel has focused on developing a body language to physically translate exaggerated human emotions, exploring themes of hysteria and madness through movement. In his latest work, he continues this investigation, creating performance as a kind of ritual, a gathering, a world of unexpected beauty and emotional power. Making this piece especially poignant is that Platel’s approach is a dedication to the late modern dance legend, Pina Bausch. “A master of the unconventional” Evening Standard Out of Context –

See contemporary Italian theatre at its most relevant and daring. Italian director Pippo Delbono pushes life to the edge in a joyful, cinematic and courageous theatrical portrait, inspired by a collection of essays by Harold Brodkey, an American novelist who died of AIDS. With a surprisingly unexpected cast that includes a former street peddlar and those with physical and mental handicaps (one of whom he saved from an asylum), Delbono’s work carries an authentic edge and realness. This is the last time they will speak to one another. A contemporary approach to a timeless situation, this tour-de-force by renowned Dutch director van Hove is both voyeuristic and heart-breaking. The critically acclaimed Art of Time Ensemble brings to life the 1898 novel The War of the Worlds as a staged radio drama to mark the centenary of Bernard Hermann’s birth, the Academy Award-winning composer who worked with Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles among others.
