As the UK’s longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II has seen Britain change dramatically over the years. Yet she has remained a constant presence in the lives of the people of the UK and Commonwealth. Duty and family are very important to her. As a child during the Second World War she inspired the nation. The lessons she learned during these formative years helped her ensure the Royal Family remains a symbol of tradition in the 21st Century.

9 Parish and Community News June 2016 The British National Anthem dates back to the eighteenth century. 'God Save The King' was a patriotic song first publicly performed in London in 1745, which came to be known as the National Anthem at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The words and tune are anonymous, and may date back to the seventeenth century.

The British tune has been used in other countries. European visitors to Britain in the eighteenth century noticed the advantage of a country possessing such a recognised musical symbol. In total, around 140 composers, including Beethoven, Haydn and Brahms, have used the tune in their compositions. Since only the first verse is normally sung many people are unaware that there are two verses to our National Anthem. Below is the complete version.

1. God save our gracious Queen! 2.Thy choicest gifts in store Long live our noble Queen! On her be pleased to pour, God save the Queen! Long may she reign. Send her victorious, May she defend our laws, Happy and glorious, And ever give us cause, Long to reign over us, To sing with heart and voice, God save the Queen. God save the Queen.

From your June Correspondent

HAPPY BIRTHDAY H.M. the Queen! This month there will be many celebrations all around the country for the 90th birthday of our reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth 2nd. Queen Elizabeth II was born Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on April 21, 1926, in London. At the time of her birth, most did not realize Elizabeth would someday become queen of Great Britain. Her father, Prince Albert, was the second son of King George V and Queen Mary Elizabeth so she got to enjoy the first decade of her life with all the privileges of being a royal without the pressures of being the heir apparent. Her father and mother, also known as the Duke and Duchess of York, divided their time between a home in London and Royal Lodge, the family's home on the grounds of Windsor Great Park. Elizabeth, nicknamed Lilibet, and her younger sister Margaret were educated at home by tutors. Academic courses included French, mathematics and history, with dancing, singing and art lessons undertaken as well. In 1936, the course of Elizabeth's life changed with the death of her grandfather, George V, with whom she was said to be close. Her uncle became King Edward VIII but he was in love with American divorcée Wallis Simpson and had to choose between the crown and his heart. In the end, Edward chose Simpson and Elizabeth's father became King George VI. With the outbreak of World War II in 1939, Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret largely stayed out of London, having been relocated to Windsor Castle. From there she made the first of her famous radio broadcasts, with this particular speech reassuring the children of Britain who had been evacuated from their homes and families. The 14-year-old princess, showing her calm and firm personality, told them that "in the end, all will be well; for God will care for us and give us victory and peace." In 1947 Princess Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten and in 1948 Prince Charles was born, followed in 1950 by Princess Ann. On February 6, 1952, King George VI died, and Elizabeth assumed the responsibilities of the ruling monarch. Her official coronation took place on June 2, 1953, in Westminster Abbey. There began a lifetime of selfless duty to her country, a sacred duty she vowed she would never forsake, and she never has. Amanda Manley

14 Parish and Community News June 2016

I've tried a different method this year with the growing of my tomato plants. I've used capillary matting seed tray inserts and stood my tomato and pepper plants on them. They fit all standard seed trays, you get a steady supply of water direct to the root system. It takes the guesswork out of the watering, the plants can take up the water they require. Also if you have to leave the plants for a few days having a break or holiday the plants are able to care for themselves. My hanging baskets have been planted up. Some are Ivy Geraniums in the centre, mixed colour hanging Lobelias around the edges. In others I've used a variety of Fuschias in the centres of the baskets, with dark purple Petunias. Also I've tried a smaller variety of Pelargonium. Don't forget they need a good watering after planting out and need a good supply of water during dry periods throughout the summer. Last month I planted seed potatoes in canvas sacks. The sides were folded down about a third of the way. The sprouting seed potatoes planted uppermost. They are now well on their way. As the green leaves start to show I've started to lift up the sides of the sacks and apply top-soil, mounding up the soil as if they were planted out in beds. I'll let you know what sort of crop I produce. I planted out new strawberries in a bed. They are doing very well, showing plenty of flower. The raspberry plants are creeping up to the top of their wooden supports. The lawns need regular cutting now. I cut my lawns at least on a weekly basis with a second cut if necessary. Any rain and sunshine certainly makes the grass grow very quickly. Weeding is a must, try to keep on top of it with a light hoeing of the beds. My roses have started to show signs of black spot. This needs to be dealt with quickly. I use a multi purpose all in one brand which deals with, black spot, green fly, white fly, mould and rust spots. These sprays can be purchased at your local garden centre. My Rockery Alpines have given a good show. Give them a look over, trim them to their surrounds and, if any don't look good, have them out and replace them with new plants.

These were also used apparently as a sort of code to convey surreptitious messages. These wax cones would melt, bathing them with perfume while they danced. The Egyptians took cosmetics to Greece and Rome where citizens took to using White Lead to give themselves the appearance of being too well off to have to spend time working outside in the sun. This Lead content, which was also present in the Khol they used, was highly poisonous and had a corrosive affect on the skin. Elizabeth the 1st of was famous for painting her face thickly with White Lead to cover smallpox scars and her skin suffered worse scarring as a consequence. A Word in Your Ear...

Val the Vic has arrived And her husband David is here too! Yes, two vicars at once, perhaps a little like buses? – you wait for ages, and none turn up, then suddenly there are two; what’s that all about? You have heard the expression “God works in mysterious ways” – and it is probably more true than many people care to realise. What a story we have to tell you, and we look forward to meeting you and getting to know you. We feel as if we have been moving here for months, with all the exploration of the Benefice, Interviews and then the actual move (along with all the boxes!). And what a welcome we received! – many people have called, just to say hello, and ask if there is anything we need. It is really affirming for us that we are in the place we felt God needed us to be; and ready to be part of the community here. We have already sensed how different it is to live in a rural area, rather than a town (we were in Trimley / Felixstowe). Everyone here is busy with so many practical things – even down to our neighbour concreting our new washing line post into position. We were formally licensed to the Bacton Benefice on 4th May, by Bishop Martin (Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich) – at a service in Bacton church (which was packed!), and a wonderful celebration of the unity across the parishes. Now we have to get used to just how many things are going on in the area, who’s who, and how to find places! We have been amazed by the number of people attending the Community Café at Wyverstone village hall (usually 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month); it is so encouraging to see local produce for sale, and people enjoying being together (We suspect the Bacon Rolls help quite a bit!). We now we have to get a lot of things established – and learn a lot of names; we simply want you to know we are here for everyone in the area, if you want to talk or share a problem, we will help if and where we can – you can contact us on [email protected] (and hopefully soon on Facebook). Please say hello if you spot us out and about, we are here for everyone. Revd’s Val and David White

The Supreme Governor of the Church of England is a title held by the British monarch that signifies titular leadership over the Church of England. Although the monarch's authority over the Church of England is largely ceremonial, the position is still very relevant to the church and is mostly observed in a symbolic capacity. The Supreme Governor formally appoints high-ranking members of the church on the advice of the Prime Minister of the , who is in turn advised by church leaders. "Defender of the Faith" (Fidei Defensor) has been part of the English monarch's title since Henry VIII was granted it by Pope Leo X in 1521 in recognition of Henry's role in opposing the Protestant Reformation.

The Coldstream Guards Colour will be Trooped at the Queen’s Birthday Parade this year. Although The Queen was born on 21 April, it has long been the tradition to celebrate the Sovereign's Birthday in the summer. 42 Parish and Community News June 2016 Outing to Hyde Hall and The Beth Chatto Gardens Saturday, 25 June 2016 Leaving Bacton at 9.00 am, return journey at 5.00 pm

We are making a return visit to Hyde Hall near Chelmsford, Essex which is RHS garden. A lot of work has been undertaken to return this 360 acre estate to its former rural glory. The old rose garden has had a facelift this year with new cultivars added including Pemberton roses and shrub roses. The upper pond has been drained, dredged and replanted with a range of water plants which should be flowering through the summer months. We should also see the cultivated perennial meadow which was planted in January 2015 and is expected to take three years to mature. Hyde Hall has refreshments facilities or you can wait until we get to The Beth Chatto Garden to eat. In the afternoon we will then travel to The Beth Chatto Garden which covers seven acres. We will be able to look at the Gravel Garden, Scree Garden, Water Garden, Woodland Garden and Reservoir Garden. After a wander around the garden there will be a chance for tea and to buy plants from the nursery before leaving for home at 5.00 pm when the Gardens close. In the event of inclement weather timings may change slightly. Cost: £25 for coach and entry to Hyde Hall and The Beth Chatto Gardens £10 deposit (non refundable) - to be paid in full by Wednesday, 15 June 2016. Please make cheques payable to ‘Bacton & Wyverstone Horticultural Society’.
