He was a farmer for 38 years on the family farm in Dutton Dunwich before retiring and moving to Iona in 2009. He kept his farmer's roots with regular walks, cutting wood and working for local farmers. March 24th, 2020 was a different kind of day for Ross. He recalls feeling unwell and it turned out that he had contracted the coronavirus. A short time later, Ross’ daughters were notified by their mother, June that their dad was at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital and the doctors were concerned that he might not make it. It happened rapidly, and his hospital stay ended up being 71 days, with 50 of those days in the Intensive Care Unit at STEGH, and 41 of those days on a ventilator.

Married 49 years, Ross and June Lunn’s anniversary fell on May 8th while Ross was still in the hospital. Given the infectious nature of this new virus, no family members could visit. Technology came in to play allowing the family to communicate through chats, playing music and recorded messages sent in from over 30 family members and friends. The family kept in touch with the Hospital three times a day and a progress binder was created for him.

ROSS LUNN

BEATS THE COVID-19 ODDS…

Eventually Ross and June’s son-in-law, Jeremy, who is their daughter Marlene’s husband took over. Marlene explained that given the difficulty of hearing the emotional news of set-backs, Jeremy was able to absorb the information and relay it back to the family better. As the family supported one another throughout Ross’ fight for his life, June Lunn was also diagnosed with the virus and spent a short time in STEGH. Fortunately she too had the support of her family, friends and neighbours.

71 days after first being admitted to STEGH, Sherrey van der Maarel, an Intensive Care nurse prepared Ross for discharge. Dr. Phil Andros, Critical Care Chief of Medicine at STEGH, a part of the large intensive care group that took care of Ross was the first to emphasize the severity of the situation.

“It was a roller coaster with Ross and there were times when things seemed so bleak. We quickly learned that patients critically ill with COVID-19 didn’t behave like your ‘typical’ ventilated ICU patient and because it was new to everyone, we really didn’t know what the course of the disease was going to be like,” explained Andros.

“It was a huge success story for our hospital, for the fight against the virus itself but most of all for Ross” Andros said. “In the face of weeks of frustration, anxiety and fear, Ross‘ success was finally something good that came out of this pandemic. It gave us hope.”

“When he left the hospital, we shared the beautiful photos of Ross and his family with the entire team that helped get him across the finish line. It was a proud moment for all of us at STEGH because we made a real difference in the most important way,” he said. Andros expanded to say he would never forget the moment June Lunn embraced her husband as he Through your donations came down the hallway to leave the hospital for good. “Their love for each other really puts supporting the purchase of things into perspective.” vital equipment at STEGH, Andros went on to say that equipment in the Intensive Care Unit at STEGH such as the Ross Lunn is one of many ventilator, ultrasound machine, and the video tower bronchoscope was highly instrumental in Ross’ care, along with perseverance, time and good old-fashioned elbow grease from the patients that have benefited bedside nurses and respiratory therapists. from the patient care they As for Ross’ family, they are extremely grateful for all the care Ross and June received at need and deserve. STEGH. They explained that it was hard to express their true feelings but our STEGH team certainly know how grateful they are. To date, Ross is doing well and continues his journey of recovery. He is looking forward to the day he can get back to riding his lawnmower. You make a difference!

The owners, the Daniels Family have been producing botanical skin care products, literally from the ground up, using their farm grown herbs, fruits and vegetables for the past 20 years. When COVID-19 hit the St. Thomas and Elgin area, frontline workers at STEGH were spending long hours working to support the patients at OUR Hospital –as a result, their hands and lips were extremely chapped and painful.

Upon reaching out to this incredibly generous family, 500 jars of hand cream, 1,000 lip balms, and 500 jars of foot soak were donated in support of their Hospital, a Hospital they say has been very good to them providing the best of care to their family over the years. Families like the Daniels are the heart and soul of our community, and we thank them for their generosity during a very difficult time!
