The core mission of the Domestic Violence Unit (DVU) is to improve the ability of child protection workers to respond effectively to children and families affected by domestic violence. The DVU now has several components, which include consultation on high risk cases, oversight and development of services for families and practice and policy reform. Domestic Violence Specialists remain at the center of the DVU as advocates – for families and for systems change. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Massachusetts Department of Social Services (DSS) Domestic Violence Unit is indebted to all of the people who made this publication possible, mainly the families who have been affected by domestic violence and have shared their experiences with us. After years of struggling with how to deal with abusive partners in Child Protective Service (CPS) cases involving domestic violence, the Domestic Violence Unit enlisted the help of Fernando Mederos to begin a dialogue and build a knowledge base of working with abusive men within a CPS context. This document brings together extensive knowledge from the fields of child protection, domestic violence and intervention with men who batter. -

According to Nuwer (2011) between 1970 and 2006, there was at least one hazing-related death each year on a college campus. Hazing education and prevention programs, such as speaker series, anti-hazing marketing campaigns, policy enforcement efforts, and sanctioning, which are frequently grounded in an extensional definition of hazing, have been present on college campuses for the past 20 years, yet the incidents of hazing are on the rise (Ellsworth, 2006; Nuwer, 2004). The literature repeatedly states that, due to the lack of a common definition, awareness and prevention efforts are often unsuccessful at increasing students’ awareness of hazing activities or reducing the likelihood that hazing activities will occur (Allan & Madden, 2008; Ellsworth, 2006; Hollmann, 2002; Shaw, 1992; Smith, 2009). Allan and Madden (2008) found that 91 percent of students who have experienced hazing do not identify themselves as being hazed. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not there were differences in students’ ability to identify hazing activities after treatment which consisted of reading either an extensional or analytical definition of hazing. -
OCSA Bullying/Cyberbullying/Hate Violence Policy
OCSA BULLYING/CYBER BULLYING/HATE VIOLENCE POLICY All students and employees of the Orange County School of the Arts have the right to work, to attend school, and to participate in the educational process in a safe environment that is free from bullying and hate-motivated behavior. Every effort shall be made to promote mutual respect among students and staff and between and among students to encourage safe and harmonious relations that support human dignity and equality. The OCSA Board of Trustees recognizes the harmful effects of bullying on student learning and school attendance and desires to provide safe school environments that protect students from physical and emotional harm. School employees shall establish student safety as a high priority and shall not tolerate bullying of any student. No student or group of students shall, through physical, written, verbal, or other means, harass, sexually harass, threaten, intimidate, cyberbully, cause bodily injury to, or commit hate violence against any other student or school personnel. Students who have been bullied or cyberbullied shall promptly report such incidents to any staff member. Behavior or statements that degrade, intimidate, and/or harm an individual on the basis of his/her race, ethnicity, culture, heritage, immigration status, gender, sexual orientation, physical/mental attributes, religious beliefs or practices shall not be tolerated. Bullying in any form or platform, repeatedly picking fights with, or repeatedly taunting another person shall not be tolerated. This policy applies to all OCSA students and employees. This policy applies to all acts related to school activity or school attendance occurring within a school under the jurisdiction of the Executive Director of the Orange County School of the Arts. -

Miller Wright State University Abstract In 2019, 36.5% of students, age 12-17, reported that they were cyberbullied at some point in their life. Cyberbullying is a growing problem within Ohio. Self-mutilation, attempted suicide, and death have been linked to victims of cyberbullying. Within Ohio, there are also legal implications for schools to consider. Using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems framework, different types of cyberbullies, bullying practices, and proposed solutions for cyberbullying can be addressed in a more comprehensive manner within the schools. Ultimately, schools can be the vanguards for social justice, creating the cultural shift to end cyberbullying and its devastating effects on victims. Keywords: cyberbullying, school administration and faculty, adolescents, social justice, ecological model Cyberbullying, also known as e-bullying or digital harassment, has grown from a technological possibility to a universal problem among communities of young people within the past two decades. Adolescent populations have both high rates of victimization and potentially severe consequences to their mental and physical health. Hinduja and Patchin (2019) indicated that 36.5% of adolescents ages 12 to 17 in the United States reported being cyberbullied at least once. Lis Bates, [email protected] University of Bristol, UK This policy paper is a comment piece on recent sexual harassment and abuse scandals in the British Parliament, which also references new UK research on justice and gender-based violence. The author draws on six years working for the British Parliament as a clerk (parliamentary civil servant) to reflect on why the parliamentary culture and management has long ignored sexual harassment, abuse and bullying, often moving victims on rather than challenging (alleged) perpetrators. The paper presents current research being conducted by the universities of Bristol, Cardiff and UWE and national charity Women’s Aid, which is asking ‘What does justice mean to victims of gender-based violence?’ Using emerging findings from interviews with over 250 victims/survivors of gender- based abuse, the paper draws lessons for how the House of Commons authorities should respond to sexual harassment and abuse within Parliament. Vital in any victim-centred response are some key principles. Victims/survivors must: be listened to and taken seriously, be empowered to make their own choices about what happens next, be given a range of options including formal sanctions as well as less formal routes, potentially including specialist ‘transformational mediation’ and, most crucially, all be given access to specialist advocates trained in sexual harassment and abuse. -
Defamation, That Is, Comments Or Statements That Tarnish Or Destroy a Person’S Reputation in the Minds of Others
You Can’t Say That!! continued Hilary Findlay, a lawyer, and Rachel Corbett, a risk management consultant, are founders and directors of the Centre for Sport and Law. They are regular contributors to Coaches Report. In the last issue of Coaches Report, we wrote about defamation, that is, comments or statements that tarnish or destroy a person’s reputation in the minds of others. We identified the three elements that make a communication defamatory: A written or spoken communication must be made to a third person. The communication must convey a defamatory meaning or be capable of being interpreted in a defamatory manner. The defamatory meaning must be about the person bringing the allegation. We cited the case of Pliuskaitis v. Jotautas,1 in which a board member of a swim club was found by the court to have made a number of defamatory comments about the club’s coach. We explained that there is a very low threshold for a finding of defamation. In other words, it is not difficult to prove the three elements of defamation described above. Once defamation is established, the question becomes, Are the circumstances such that a defamatory communication may be legally justified or allowable? These are called “defences” to a claim of defamation and they are the focus of this article. We will also pick up the case of Pliuskaitis v. Jotautas and look at the defences put forward by the board member and see whether or not they were successful. There are four defences to a finding of defamation: consent, fair comment, justification, and qualified privilege. -
